The long sustained sound of the string music forms a warm background sound field, just like the background color rendered in an ink painting, providing a support for the guzheng, and enhancing the three-dimensionality and thickness of the melody.
With a rhythm that is neither fast nor slow, every note of the guzheng is clearly audible, and every tiny pause in between creates a feeling of time slowing down.
The erhu and other instruments together create an airy feeling in the music. It is not as heavy as Western music, but light and moist, like a sudden rain over the water towns of the south of the Yangtze River.
With the guzheng as the bones, string instruments as the flesh, and the pentatonic scale as the soul, a rich and elegant Chinese style takes shape instantly.
