"Take him down!" Ying Yi shouted in a low voice, and his long sword, gleaming coldly, was the first to be drawn, slashing straight at the face of the first man in black. The man reacted extremely quickly, dodging to the side, while his short blade shot out like a viper's tongue, barely grazing Ying Yi's shoulder blade, drawing a string of blood beads.
"This is a tough one, we need to finish this quickly!" the man in black roared, and the others immediately surrounded him, their swords flashing and their attacks forming an impenetrable net.
The guards were all elites personally trained and trained by Zhan Yihou, each capable of taking on ten men. However, these men in black were clearly no pushovers either, their moves ruthless and cunning, each strike aimed directly at vital points, resulting in a fierce and evenly matched battle for a time.
The crisp sounds of clashing weapons, muffled groans, and the splattering of blades into flesh, mixed with the howling of the night wind, exploded outside the empty Hall of Righteousness.
Lin Yiwan stood inside the window, clutching several silver needles tightly in her hand, her gaze sharp as a hawk, taking in the entire situation on the field.
She noticed that these men in black all wore a silver crescent-shaped token around their waists, which was the insignia of the imperial guards, indicating that they were from the palace.
"Zi'er," Lin Yiwan's voice was calm and steady, without the slightest hint of emotion, "go and take Madam Hu and her son to the inner chamber. Send ten more men to guard them, and they are not allowed to leave even for a moment."
Zi'er's face turned pale, but she knew this was not the time to be cowardly, so she responded and turned to leave quickly.
The fighting outside the hall intensified. One of the guards was accidentally kicked in the chest by a man in black, flying backward and crashing into a pillar. He coughed up blood and was clearly going to die.
Yingyi's eyes were bloodshot with rage. He wielded his long sword with ferocious speed, each strike carrying the force of thunder, forcing the murderous man in black to retreat repeatedly.
"You're courting death!" Enraged, the man in black swung his short blade in a backhand motion, aiming for Shadow's groin. Shadow dodged to the side, but the man seized the opening, the blade aimed straight for his heart. At that critical moment, a cold light pierced the air, striking the man in black's wrist with pinpoint accuracy.
"Ah!" The man in black screamed as his short blade clattered to the ground.
Taking advantage of the opportunity, Shadow One delivered a finishing blow, the blade piercing through the black-clad man's chest, blood spurting out.
He looked up and saw that Zi'er was standing under the eaves at some point, holding a small crossbow in her hand, her eyes cold and frosty.
"Zi'er!" Yingyi exclaimed, both surprised and delighted.
Zi'er nodded slightly, and aimed her crossbow at the battlefield again: "Leave them alive."
These two words were like a military order. The guards immediately adjusted their tactics, no longer aiming for the kill, but instead focusing on the joints of the men in black. Screams of agony rose and fell, and in no time, three men in black had their arms dislocated and lay paralyzed on the ground, unable to move.
Seeing that the situation was not good, the remaining two exchanged a glance and actually tried to break away.
"Trying to leave?" Ying Yi sneered and led his men to give chase.
One of them was a little slower and was kicked to the ground by Ying Yi. The guards immediately rushed forward and tied him up tightly. The other, however, took advantage of the darkness to climb over the courtyard wall and was about to escape.
Zi'er's eyes turned cold, and she fired another crossbow bolt. This bolt was as swift as lightning, striking the man squarely in the back of the knee.
The man in black screamed and tumbled off the courtyard wall, landing in a daze. Before he could get up, he was pinned down by the pursuing guards.
The battle finally came to an end. The night wind blew, and the air was filled with a heavy, nauseating smell of blood.
The lanterns under the eaves swayed in the wind. In the dim light, bloodstains and weapons were scattered all over the ground. Several wounded guards were leaning against a pillar, panting, their faces ashen.
Yingyi strode up to Lin Yiwan and knelt on one knee: "I failed to protect you properly and caused you to be frightened, Madam."
Lin Yiwan calmly said, "Get up. Take those survivors away and interrogate them thoroughly. I need to know who sent them. Also, make sure the casualties are tallied. Those who are seriously injured should be treated immediately. For the brothers who sacrificed their lives, the compensation will be doubled, and I will personally take care of their families."
"Yes!" Yingyi accepted the order and stood up, his eyes filled with admiration.
Lin Yiwan walked slowly to the entrance of the Hall of Gathering Righteousness and looked up at the crossbeam. There was an oil paper package there, and it was clear that Madam Hu had not lied; the roster should be hidden inside.
She had Zi'er take it off and carefully placed it in her sleeve.
The night wind carried the stench of blood across the corridor. Lin Yiwan lowered her eyes and stroked the edges of the oil paper package, her fingertips feeling slightly cool.
This thin package involved the lives of several people in the court, so she dared not be negligent in the slightest. She simply stuffed the oil paper package into her sleeve again to make sure it was completely covered by her clothes.
“Madam,” Zi’er said, supporting her arm with a worried voice, “Those men in black were extremely ruthless. Fortunately, Commander Yingyi was prepared, otherwise they would have taken this register!”
“Yes, if Meiyingyi hadn’t arrived in time, we would all be dead here today.” Lin Yiwan continued, her tone indifferent, but her eyes flashed with cold light.
She frowned and pondered: "They came so quickly, they must have been keeping an eye on the Wolf Head Gang for a long time. Hu Tianyi is just a pawn. What they really want to protect are the names on the roster."
Zi'er was alarmed and couldn't help but move closer to Lin Yiwan: "Then, if we set off back to the capital tomorrow, will there still be dangers on the way?"
"Danger is inevitable." Lin Yiwan looked up at the deep night, the distant mountains resembling lurking beasts. "But the more dangerous it is, the faster we must travel. Delay will only lead to unforeseen circumstances, and the longer we stay, the more things may go wrong."
As they were talking, Ying Yi turned back, followed by two guards, each carrying a man in black. The two men had their hands and feet crippled, their mouths gagged with strips of cloth, and could only make muffled groans, their eyes filled with resentment and fear.
“Madam, these two are the most stubborn; they absolutely refuse to confess. I think perhaps you have a way to pry their mouths open,” Yingyi said in a deep voice.
Lin Yiwan slowly walked forward, looking down at the two people on the ground.
The moonlight shone on her, making her features appear cold and frosty.
She crouched down, her fingertips gently brushing against the crescent-shaped token on one of the men's waists, her voice as soft as a whisper: "A token of the Imperial Guard, quite a prestigious identity. It's a pity it became someone else's weapon and ended up like this."
The man struggled violently, his eyes filled with even more hatred, but he was tightly bound and could only writhe on the ground.
Lin Yiwan chuckled lightly, but the smile didn't reach her eyes: "Your master is quite willing to send you assassins to your deaths. It's a pity that he didn't foresee that I would be left alive."
She stood up and said calmly to Ying Yi, "There's no need to interrogate them. Keep a close watch on them and bring them back to the capital tomorrow to be dealt with by the Marquis. The Marquis has the means; he will surely be able to dig out the person behind them."
Yingyi acknowledged the order and waved for his men to drag the two men in black away.
