The old doctor looked him over carefully and immediately understood.
He looked at Zhan Mu and said, "Young Master, do as he says, move to the private room!"
Zhan Mu and Zhan Miao supported Rong Zhiyu on either side and carefully placed him on the soft couch.
The old doctor said with a complicated expression, "Your injury is very serious. If this arrow is not removed in time, it may damage your internal organs!"
Zhan Mu urged anxiously, "Old doctor, what are you hesitating for? Hurry up and start pulling it out!"
The old doctor frowned and said, "Young master, it's not that I don't want to remove it, but his identity is somewhat special, and I can't make the decision!"
Zhan Miao understood instantly, and she asked incredulously, "Young Master Rong, you, you're not a man at all? You're a woman?"
Rong Zhiyu closed her eyes with difficulty: "Brother Mu, I'm sorry, I lied to you. It's too difficult for a woman to live in this world, so I disguised myself as a man!"
Zhan Mu shuddered, his hand gripping the soft couch tightened abruptly, his knuckles turning white.
He stared blankly at Rong Zhiyu's pale face, the images of drinking and riding horses together side by side in the past swirling in his mind. Beneath those cheerful and unrestrained appearances, there was such a heavy secret.
After a moment of stunned silence, the anxiety in his eyes overcame the shock, and he said in a deep voice as his Adam's apple bobbed, "Old doctor, you step out. Just give me the instructions, and I'll pull out the arrow."
The old doctor hesitated, about to dissuade him from the danger of pulling out the arrow, but was stopped by the stubbornness in Zhan Mu's eyes.
He quickly retrieved a strong liquor to disinfect the dagger, and had Zhan Miao prepare clean strips of cloth and hemostatic herbs. He took a deep breath, squatted down beside the soft couch, and stared at the arrow on Rong Zhiyu's shoulder. His voice was steady: "Zhiyu, bear with it, I will be gentle."
Rong Zhiyu slowly opened her eyes, her gaze filled with a hint of panic and embarrassment, but she still nodded gently and clutched the brocade quilt beneath her.
Zhan Mu pressed down on her shoulder with one hand to steady her, and with the other hand he gripped the arrow's fletching. His eyes were fixed on the direction the arrow had pierced. Taking advantage of the moment she took a breath, he suddenly exerted force with his wrist and cleanly pulled the arrow out.
Blood gushed out instantly, staining her clothes on her shoulder. Rong Zhiyu trembled in pain, groaned, and almost fainted. Zhan Mu immediately pressed on her wound and signaled Zhan Miao to quickly apply herbal medicine and wrap the bandage tightly.
Once the bleeding subsided, Rong Zhiyu's breathing calmed down a bit, but he dared not look Zhan Mu in the eye again. He only said in a low voice, "Brother Mu, I deceived you first. If you blame me, I have nothing to say!"
He gently wiped the cold sweat from her cheeks, his gaze intense and earnest, his tone resolute and unwavering: "Zhiyu, I never blame you. Life is hard for women, and it's already remarkable that you've managed to hold on until now."
He paused, placed his palm on the back of her hand, and said in a more solemn voice, "Today I personally removed the arrow from your hand, and from now on I will protect you. Once you have recovered, I will inform my family and marry you as a proper wife. I will never fail you in this life."
Rong Zhiyu looked up abruptly, her eyes filled with disbelief, and tears welled up instantly, sliding down her pale cheeks.
Zhan Miao stood aside, looking at the scene before her, a look of surprise flashed in her eyes. She couldn't help but wonder how her elder brother could make such a decision on his own. Didn't he have to consult their mother first about such an important matter as marriage?
She wanted to remind him, so she lowered her voice and said, "Brother, Sister Rong just pulled out an arrow and is very weak. Would you like to let her rest for a while?"
Zhan Mu nodded: "Yes, I also have something to tell you!"
The brother and sister walked out of the room, both with very solemn expressions.
Zhan Miao spoke first: "Big brother, were you serious when you made that promise to Sister Rong just now?"
Zhan Mu frowned and replied, "Why would I lie to her? Besides, she just saved my life!"
Zhan Miao interrupted without hesitation: "Your marriage is a major life event, and you must ask your mother!"
Zhan Mu shook his head: "My mother can understand me. Besides, I just removed the arrow from Zhiyu myself. I have seen her body. She cannot marry anyone else!"
Zhan Miao's eyes reddened with anxiety; she hadn't expected her older brother to be so stubborn.
She gritted her teeth and demanded, "How are you going to explain this to Mother?"
Zhan Mu said gently, "Miao'er, you have to help your older brother keep this a secret for now. I'm taking care of Zhiyu's injuries outside, and I probably won't be able to come home for a long time!"
Zhan Miao was initially reluctant to agree, but seeing his pleading eyes, she could only nod.
In the days that followed, Zhan Mu turned down almost all other trivial matters and stayed at the inn every day to take care of Rong Zhiyu.
Every morning, he would personally go to the market to select the freshest ingredients, have the kitchen prepare nourishing soups and porridges, and feed them to her spoonful by spoonful.
In his spare time, he would sit by the soft couch and tell her interesting stories from outside the city, or read some poems to relieve her boredom. To keep her from getting bored, he even had a few pots of orchids in full bloom brought over and placed by the window to add some vitality.
Rong Zhiyu recovered from her injuries very quickly; in just over half a month, she was able to get up and move around with difficulty.
That afternoon, the sunlight was just right, streaming through the window and into the room, making it warm and cozy. She sat on a soft chair by the window, looking at the plants and trees in the courtyard outside, her fingertips gently twirling an orchid petal, her expression tender.
Zhan Mu carried in a bowl of freshly stewed white fungus soup. Seeing her gazing out the window in a daze, he walked quietly to her side and handed her the bowl: "The weather is nice today, so get some sunshine. It's good for your recovery. Drink some white fungus soup while it's hot to soothe your throat."
Rong Zhiyu snapped out of her daze, took the bowl, and felt a warmth in her heart as her fingertips touched the warm porcelain. She looked up at Zhan Mu and said, "You've had a hard time these past few days."
Zhan Mu sat down beside her, his gaze falling on her increasingly rosy cheeks, his eyes full of smiles: "Doing things for you, how can you say it's hard work?"
He paused, his tone tinged with anticipation: "Your injuries have almost healed. I plan to set off for the manor tomorrow to inform Father and Mother about your situation, and to set a wedding date as soon as possible, so that you can rightfully stay by my side."
Upon hearing this, Rong Zhiyu's cheeks flushed slightly. She lowered her eyes and whispered, "I'll do whatever you say."
Seeing her shy appearance, Zhan Mu's heart stirred. He reached out and gently took her hand. The warmth of his palm seeped through her skin, making Rong Zhiyu's heart beat faster and her ears turn red.
The next morning, Zhan Mu arranged for carriages and horses and set off with Rong Zhiyu back to the Zhanyi Marquis's residence.
When the carriage arrived at the gate of the Zhan residence, Lin Yiwan was already waiting with her servants. She immediately saw Zhan Mu, and then her gaze fell on Rong Zhiyu beside him. Seeing that he was pale and thin, and was being carefully supported by Zhan Mu, she couldn't help but frown.
"Mu'er, what happened to Scholar Rong?" Lin Yiwan quickly stepped forward, her tone filled with doubt.
