Yan Wan is reborn as a legitimate wife: Curing Ruyi's Douyi syndrome
Chapter 138 Extra: How Many Flowers Fall in Dreams—Jingwan's Story (1)
Since birth, Jingwan has been plagued by strange dreams. They are not quite nightmares, since there is only one beautiful woman in her dreams.
When Jingwan was young, she only saw the outline of the woman in her dreams. When she was five years old, she could vaguely make out the woman's face, but a voice in her heart always told her that this woman was her mother.
But everyone in the palace clearly said that Consort Ying in front of her was her birth mother, right? Then who was the mother in her dream? Jingwan grew up in a daze with these questions in mind.
Meiruo was raised by Abu from a young age. She was a free spirit and unrestrained Mongolian, with little strict discipline towards women and no emphasis on "women's education".
In addition, Mei Ruo didn't like reading and had little knowledge of literature. She also didn't think much of women reading. Even the palace rules that were required to be memorized before entering the palace were waived by Mei Ruo's coquettish charm.
Not to mention that Mei Ruo was not well-liked in the palace, and her only associates were Consort Ke and Ruyi. None of the three were good at raising children, and they had no sense of responsibility towards their own children. Mei Ruo also did not care about Jing Wan's studies.
Jingwan cried and fussed a bit, not wanting to go to the Imperial Study, so Meiruo nodded and said, "If you don't want to go, then don't go. Anyway, learning those things is useless."
Jingwan then naturally stayed in the palace to play with the people around her. Even when Hongli wanted to give her a few words of advice on manners, Meiruo and Jingwan stopped him.
Mei Ruo was, after all, a Mongolian concubine, and the intimidated son-in-law Hongli could not interfere further.
Only Eryinzhu, who lived in the palace with her, couldn't stand it anymore and made a sarcastic remark, telling Meiruo to learn from the Empress and properly teach Jingwan to emulate Princess Yongle.
Even with Jingqin as a shining example, Meiruo remained dismissive and showed no interest in Jingwan's upbringing. In her eyes, Jingwan only needed to be a dependent nun who clung to her and the Emperor; why should she strive to be an independent and strong rose?
Although Jingwan was not that close to Meiruo, she agreed with Meiruo's idea and decided to never go to the Imperial Study again.
When Jingwan was a little over six years old, Meiruo angered Hongli and was kicked in the chest by him, leaving her bedridden.
Jingqin was ordered to come and visit, so Wei Yanwan stayed outside the palace to serve her, and was seen by Jingwan who was playing outside the palace.
When Jingwan saw Wei Yanwan's face, she was struck dumb. Unable to resist the urge in her heart, she rushed over like a cannonball, hugged Wei Yanwan tightly, and called out "Mother!"
Wei Yanwan was stunned and terrified, waving her hands repeatedly. The people inside the room also heard the commotion, and heard Mei Ruo's angry rebuke and Jing Qin's laughter.
Jingwan was brought into the palace by Jingqin and forcibly carried in by the nanny Xiyue. Wei Yanwan, afraid of Jingwan's crying, followed the two into the palace.
Jingqin glanced at Jingwan and asked, "Jingwan? I am your eldest sister, do you still remember me?"
Jingwan was only six years old, and this was the first time she had ever been face-to-face with Jingqin at close range since birth, so naturally she didn't remember it. She only stayed for a moment before pulling Wei Yanwan and calling her "Mother" again.
Jingqin smiled knowingly, making Meiruo, who was standing to the side, nervous and repeatedly scolding Jingwan. Jingqin, however, didn't care and brought up the matter of Meiruo disrespecting the emperor again.
Mei Ruo repeatedly apologized, no longer daring to abuse her power under the name of the forty-nine Mongol tribes. Because of this incident, Mei Ruo was punished and exchanged palaces with Er Yinzhu, no longer holding the main position in Yanxi Palace.
After Jingqin left, Meiruo's face darkened. Not daring to vent her anger on Jingqin, she could only take it out on Jingwan, scolding her, "Jingwan, how did your nanny teach you? How could you recognize someone else as your mother? Are your eyes just for decoration?"
Xiyue immediately knelt down to beg for forgiveness, repeatedly pleading, "Your Highness Consort Ying, it was my fault, please forgive me!"
Jingwan was only six years old. Watching Wei Yanwan leave with Jingqin without any mercy, and then being scolded loudly by Meiruo, she could no longer hold back her tears and sat on the ground crying.
After all, Jingwan was her own flesh and blood. Seeing Jingwan crying so sadly, Consort Ke also tried to comfort her, saying, "Jingwan is still young." Meiru suppressed her heartache and ordered, "Xiyue, take the princess down to discipline her."
Xiyue nodded and carried Jingwan out.
Later, Ruyi and Hongli caused a lot of trouble, and Meiruo was so focused on stirring up trouble that she didn't care much about Jingwan.
But Jingwan's dream became clearer and clearer as time went by. The woman in Jingwan's dream was no longer just a picture; she began to have actions and words.
Jingwan increasingly wanted to see Wei Yanwan, but Meiruo, fearing that Jingwan would offend Jingqin again because of the incident she had caused, strictly ordered Xiyue not to allow Jingwan to contact Wei Yanwan.
Having no other choice, and after listening to Xiyue's repeated instructions, Jingwan reluctantly accepted that Meiruo was her biological mother.
Later, when both Meiruo and Consort Yu were going on a southern tour with Hongli, Meiruo entrusted Jingwan to Consort Ke for upbringing. After all, Jingwan was not her own child, so Consort Ke did not take strict care of her.
Jingwan then slipped out, wanting to see Wei Yanwan. However, she was strictly disciplined by Meiruo and rarely came into contact with outsiders. She didn't know much about Wei Yanwan, only that Wei Yanwan was Jingqin's person.
Jingwan kept asking the palace servants about Jingqin's whereabouts. When she saw that it was the Seventh Princess who wanted to see her elder sister, the palace servants didn't think much of it and just said that Jingqin should be acting as the regent in Changchun Palace.
Jingwan nodded and walked towards Changchun Palace.
As Jingwan passed by Jingren Palace, she overheard the palace maids gossiping: "The Imperial Noble Consort just said she wanted to choose a perfect primary consort for the Fifth Prince, and then she went on a southern tour with the Emperor. If she really cares about the Fifth Prince, she should stay."
Palace maid A: "When have you ever seen her accompany the Fifth Prince on any inspection tour? Let's not even talk about how the Fifth Prince is all grown up now. Even when the Fifth Prince was just born, the Imperial Noble Consort never stayed behind."
If it weren't for Consort Wen vying to take care of the Fifth Prince, he would have long been left in the care of the Dowager Consorts.
Palace maid B: "How can a foster mother be compared to a birth mother? Over the years, whenever the Fifth Prince has had a minor illness or ailment, it has been Consort Wen who has taken care of him. When has the woman in the main hall ever cared about him?"
Palace maid A: "That's right. If you ask me, this Imperial Noble Consort deserves divine retribution. She forcibly took him in and then didn't take good care of him, treating the Fifth Prince like a kitten or a puppy. She's not his biological mother after all; she doesn't even care when he gets hurt..."
Standing in the corner, Jingwan overheard this discussion, and the woman's cry from her dream suddenly flashed into her mind: "What foster mother is there? What foster mother would ever truly care for a child?"
Jingwan had a splitting headache and could no longer walk. Xiyue searched everywhere for Jingwan and rushed over when she saw her. Seeing Jingwan clutching her head, Xiyue picked her up and carried her away.
Jingwan's escape terrified Consort Ke, who then became even more vigilant and tightened her guard.
After Ruyi was escorted back to the palace, Mei Ruo immediately arranged to visit Ruyi with Han Xiangjian upon her return.
Jingwan has been having different dreams these past few days, from dreaming of Wei Yanwan vying for her on the long street to Mei Ru forcing her to make a choice after she grows up. Jingwan has a splitting headache.
Mei Ruo was completely focused on Ruyi and didn't care about Jing Wan at all. Jing Wan spent her days alone in the courtyard, lost in thought.
Jingwan couldn't remember the general details of her dream, only that Wei Yanwan wanted to take her away, but Meiruo stopped her. She also remembered that after she became an adult, Meiruo kept forcing her to do something, and in the dream, she was in great pain. She couldn't remember anything else.
While Meiruo was visiting Ruyi, Jingwan secretly ran away. Meiruo had just come out of Shufangzhai when Abao told her that Jingwan was missing and to look for her everywhere.
Finally, they spotted Jingwan in front of Yongshou Palace and chased after her.
Jingwan finally saw Wei Yanwan and rushed over to hug her tightly, crying, "Mother... Mother..."
Wei Yanwan was stunned for a moment, and after recognizing the person, she quickly said, "Princess, this servant is not Consort Ying."
Jingwan became even more agitated and cried out, "Empress Ying is not my birth mother, only my adoptive mother! You are my true mother, Mother, Jingwan understands now, an adoptive mother is not as dear as a birth mother..."
Wei Yanwan was so frightened that she repeatedly refused.
Mei Ruo, who rushed over, was furious and spoke recklessly, belittling Wei Yanwan and scolding Jing Wan.
Jingqin had been calmly watching this farce, but after seeing Meiru belittle Wei Yanwan, she couldn't help but sneer a few times.
Mei Ruo realized what was happening and quickly tried to salvage the situation, having the servants drag Jing Wan away.
Jingwan was no match for four hands and was forcibly carried away.
Seeing that the farce was over, Jingqin gestured for everyone to leave. Wei Yanwan was still worried and watched Jingwan leave.
After Jingwan was taken away, she was reprimanded even more severely by Meiruo. In order to make Jingwan face reality, Meiruo made Abao tell her everything.
Abao: "Wei Yanwan was originally a Manchu woman from the Bordered Yellow Banner. She entered the palace at the age of fourteen and worked in the Four Treasurys. Later, she was chosen by Consort Chun to take care of the Third Prince."
Later, due to incompatibility of their destinies, she was expelled from Zhongcui Palace and demoted to the flower room. While delivering flowers in the flower room, she caught the eye of the eldest princess and was promoted to a first-class palace maid by the princess's side. Wei Yanwan served the princess for more than ten years without marrying.
Then Abao added, "If the princess doesn't believe me, she can ask the emperor. You are the master's own daughter, and there's no way you can lie about it. It's recorded in the jade tablet as well."
Jingwan was bewildered, yet she felt she had experienced the scenes in her dream before, though she couldn't quite put her finger on it. Now, with irrefutable evidence, Jingwan stopped making a fuss.
Mei Ruo, however, did not forget Jing Wan's crying and fussing. In addition, she already thought that children were "just a way to pass the time." Because of Jing Wan's fussing, she had even less patience and kept strictly disciplining her, not allowing Jing Wan to get even a step closer to Wei Yanwan.
The good times didn't last long. Less than half a year later, Hongli was poisoned by Ruyi and suffered a stroke, leaving him bedridden. Meiruo rushed to the Shenxing Division to see Ruyi, but was so frightened that she was out of her wits. Jingwan took advantage of Meiruo's shock and ran out again.
Upon hearing A Bao's report, Mei Ruo was furious. She gritted her teeth and said, "Is my daughter sent by the Eternal Heaven to torment me? What time is it? How can she run around like this?"
Enraged by Jingwan's outburst, Meiruo stopped dwelling on Ruyi's tragic fate and focused solely on finding the wandering Jingwan, fearing that she might fall into Jingqin's hands again.
Jingwan ran to Changchun Palace again, but Meiruo, who had anticipated this, caught her red-handed. This time, Meiruo was no longer in a good mood. After catching Jingwan, she immediately confined her to her quarters.
Jingwan's people were also afraid, and they stayed by the door every step of the way, fearing that Jingwan would run out again and cause trouble, which would lead to their own deaths and property.
Jingwan was locked inside the palace, and her screams and cries were useless. Meiruo was determined to teach Jingwan a lesson and kept her locked up until Jingqin ascended the throne.
