Double evil in the business district
Chapter 4: Finding Light in the Darkness
"Is anyone there? Help!" Xiao Yue's cry echoed in the empty archive room, but received no response.
She banged hard on the heavy iron door, but the cold touch filled her with despair. Fear entwined itself around her like a vine, making it almost impossible for her to breathe.
Could it be colleague Wang? Impossible, he had no reason to do that. Who was that? Did he accidentally trigger some mechanism? All sorts of speculations swirled in Xiao Yue's mind, but he couldn't find a reasonable explanation.
Time passed by minute by minute, and the archive room was eerily quiet, with only Xiao Yue's rapid breathing echoing in the air. Just when she was about to give up hope, she suddenly heard footsteps outside the door.
"Who's in there?" A familiar voice sounded. It was Sister Zhang!
Xiao Yue seemed to have grabbed a life-saving straw. She banged on the iron door with all her might and shouted loudly: "Sister Zhang, I'm here! I'm locked in!"
With a heavy metallic friction sound, the iron door slowly opened, and dazzling light shone in. Xiao Yue subconsciously closed his eyes.
"How did you get locked in? You were so careless!" Sister Zhang stood at the door, with a hint of gloating in her tone.
Xiao Yue calmed down, suppressed the fear and anxiety in his heart, and shook his head: "I don't know either. I was looking for information, and suddenly..."
"Oh, you're still thinking about looking for information?" Sister Zhang interrupted her with a hint of sarcasm on her face. "I'm telling you, Manager Li has already said that if you don't find a solution by tomorrow, you'll be fired!"
Xiao Yue's heart sank, but she ignored Sister Zhang's sarcasm and asked calmly, "Can you tell Manager Li for me? I found some clues and I'll be back later."
"A clue? Just you?" Sister Zhang looked her up and down and sneered, "Don't waste your energy. I've already found the information and will give it to Manager Li tomorrow morning."
Xiao Yue was stunned, a chill running from her feet to her heart. She looked at the smug smile on Sister Zhang's face and suddenly realized that all this was not an accident, but someone had done it on purpose!
"You..." Xiao Yue was about to question, but was interrupted impatiently by Sister Zhang, "Okay, I have something to do, so I'll leave first. You can look for it slowly by yourself."
After saying that, she turned and left, leaving Xiao Yue standing alone in the dark archive room.
Xiao Yue watched Sister Zhang's retreating figure, biting her lip tightly, her clenched fists trembling slightly. She knew that she was now alone and helpless, and the real challenge had just begun.
Xiao Yue took a deep breath and tried to calm herself down. Sister Zhang had already found the information, which was undoubtedly a double blow to her. However, she didn't believe that Sister Zhang could find the key information to solve the problem so quickly, unless...
Unless she already knew the answer, or someone secretly helped her.
This thought made Xiao Yue's heart tremble. She suddenly remembered that colleague Wang was unusually attentive to her before. He always "kindly" reminded her of some irrelevant information and even offered to help her find information.
Looking back now, those seemingly enthusiastic actions seemed more like they were delaying her time and disrupting her train of thought.
Xiao Yue immediately went to confront Wang, but found he was not at his workstation. She asked around, but received vague responses like "I don't know" and "I didn't notice."
The uneasy feeling in Xiao Yue's heart became stronger and stronger, and she realized that she might have fallen into a carefully designed trap.
To make matters worse, Secretary Zhao took the opportunity to exaggerate Xiao Yue's situation in front of the senior management, describing her as an incompetent employee who only shirked responsibility. The senior management's impression of Xiao Yue took a sharp turn for the worse, and they even began to consider transferring her from her current position.
Xiao Yue tried to explain, but found herself at a loss for words. Wang, a colleague who had returned to the office at some point, pretended to be concerned and asked, "Xiao Yue, I heard you're in trouble. Do you need any help?"
Xiao Yue gave him a cold look, ignoring his false pretenses. She knew Wang just wanted to laugh at her, to see her cornered. She took a deep breath, telling herself she couldn't give up. She had to find the truth and prove her innocence.
After get off work, Xiao Yue dragged her exhausted body back home, ate a few bites of food, and then returned to the company. The empty office seemed unusually quiet, with only the sounds of keyboard tapping and paper shuffling echoing in the air.
Xiao Yue spread all the information out on the table again, carefully checking every document and every number, trying to find any clues he had overlooked.
Time passed by minute by minute, and the night grew darker. Just when Xiao Yue was about to give up, she suddenly noticed an inconspicuous report. The string of numbers on it made her heart move.
She picked up the calculator and began to calculate quickly. As she finalized the last number, her pupils suddenly contracted and she muttered to herself, "So that's how it is..."
At this moment, the office door was suddenly pushed open, and a voice rang out at the door: "It's so late, are you still working overtime?"
Xiao Yue looked up suddenly and saw Manager Li standing at the door with a meaningful smile on his face. Why was he here? Did Secretary Zhao ask him to monitor him?
Xiao Yue's heart was filled with alarm. He calmly closed the report and replied calmly, "Manager Li, I still have some work to do. What brought you here?"
Manager Li walked over to Xiao Yue and casually flipped through the documents on the table. He said nonchalantly, "Xiao Xiao, I know you've been busy looking for information recently, but you can't fall behind in department work. Here's the client information we'll need tomorrow. Please organize it."
Xiao Yue took the thick stack of information and groaned inwardly. These were all insignificant client information, and sorting them out was both time-consuming and laborious. It was obvious that Manager Li was deliberately trying to distract her.
However, she couldn't refuse now, so she could only suppress her anxiety and pretend to work seriously.
Manager Li looked at Xiao Yue's back as she lowered her head to organize documents, a barely perceptible sneer appeared on the corner of his mouth, and he turned and left the office.
With Manager Li's departure, the office fell silent once more. Xiao Yue forced herself to focus, mechanically sorting through the documents in her hands. However, her mind kept replaying the numbers on the report and those seemingly unrelated events.
Her intuition told her that she was very close to the truth. As long as she found the key evidence, she could completely crush the conspiracy against her. However, time was running out.
It was late at night, and the entire office building had fallen into a deep sleep. Only a single light was still on in Xiao Yue's office. Xiao Yue rubbed her sore eyes, leaned back in her chair wearily, and looked at the mountain of documents on her desk, feeling a sense of powerlessness.
At this moment, she accidentally caught a glimpse of the blinking cursor on the computer screen, and a bold idea emerged in her mind. She quickly opened the company's internal system and entered a string of characters...
A dialog box popped up on the computer screen, requiring a password to continue. Xiao Yue took a deep breath, closed his eyes, and quickly tapped on the keyboard, entering a string of numbers...
With a soft "ding" sound, the system verification passed. Xiao Yue's spirits suddenly lifted, and her sleepiness was swept away. She couldn't wait to enter the keywords and began searching the company's database.
Time ticked by, the progress bar on the computer screen moving slowly. Xiao Yue stared at the screen intently, sweat forming on his palms.
Finally, the search results came out, with only a few records. Xiao Yue's heartbeat suddenly accelerated. She clicked on one of them, only to find it was just an insignificant meeting record.
"Am I wrong?" A hint of disappointment flashed through Xiao Yue's heart, but she did not give up and continued to click on the next record.
This time, what appeared before her was a detailed list of project funds. Xiao Yue's eyes quickly scanned the densely packed numbers, and suddenly, her pupils shrank sharply, and her finger trembled as she pointed at one of the payments.
The amount of money was huge, the purpose was unclear, and the account it was transferred to was also very suspicious. Xiao Yue was ecstatic, she felt that she was only one step away from the truth.
However, before she could take a closer look, the office door was suddenly pushed open.
"Xiao Xiao, why haven't you finished get off work yet?"
Colleague Wang's voice rang out from the doorway, a hint of surprise in his tone. Xiao Yue was startled, and hurriedly turned off the computer screen, turning to look at the door.
Wang, a colleague, had a tired look on his face and was holding a document in his hand. When he saw Xiao Yue, he smiled and explained, "Manager Li asked me to give this document to Secretary Zhao. He'll need it tomorrow morning."
"Oh, okay, just put it on my desk." Xiao Yue tried his best to sound calm, but his heart was filled with turmoil.
After Wang left, Xiao Yue immediately turned on her computer, only to find that the system had automatically logged her out of the page she had just been on. She tried to log in again, but was prompted with an incorrect password.
"Damn it!" Xiao Yue cursed softly. She knew that colleague Wang must have discovered something, so he deliberately sent her away and changed the system password.
There were less than three days left, and Xiao Yue felt like he was trapped in a dark maze, unable to find an exit and seeing no hope.
"Xiao Xiao, aren't you going to get off work yet?"
Sister Zhang's voice sounded at the door, interrupting Xiao Yue's thoughts.
"I'll leave right away."
Xiao Yue packed up her things and walked out of the company gate, but saw colleague Wang standing not far away, looking at her with a smile.
"Colleague Wang, why aren't you going home so late?"
Xiao Yue asked while pretending to be calm.
"As for me," Wang stepped closer and said in a low voice, "I'm waiting for you..."
