No Way for a Concubine

Shen Yiyao's thoughts were instantly pulled back by reality. Everything in front of her seemed so strange and complicated. She was no longer the modern woman who could breathe freely, but was trapped in an ancient world where conspiracy, power struggle and even love deception were intertwined.

"Common daughter Shen Yiyao? You don't deserve anything."

These words echoed in her mind. She clearly remembered that this wasn't just something Shen Yaoyue had said; it was the rule of this world. Concubine daughters never had much power, especially when the Shen Mansion she lived in was already rife with conflict and scheming.

She couldn't help but feel a wave of cold fear, turning back to look at Shen Qianyun, the cold, powerful man with whom she had never had much contact. He was the heir to the Shen family and the only one who could change her fate - if he wanted to.

However, Shen Qianyun's gaze didn't linger on her. Even though she stood there, with her pretty face and a hint of intelligence and shrewdness in her eyes, she still couldn't catch his attention for a moment. To Shen Qianyun, the existence of a concubine's daughter was just an insignificant pawn in the family chess game. Even the word "pawn" might be too flattering.

A flicker of determination flashed in Shen Yiyao's eyes. She was no longer the helpless woman at the mercy of others. She didn't want to be toyed with by fate, and she didn't want to live in the vortex of intrigue and deception in the Shen Mansion.

She looked down at her gorgeous dress, and suddenly a crazy idea popped up in her mind - change, only change, is her only way out.

"Shen Yiyao, why are you here?" Suddenly, a cold voice sounded, breaking her thoughts. Shen Qianyun finally turned around, staring at her with those cold eyes, as if dissatisfied with her presence in this place.

Shen Yiyao was slightly startled, then regained her composure, lowered her head and didn't look at him, whispering, "I... was just passing by."

Shen Qianyun said nothing more, glancing at her coldly, seemingly indifferent to her presence. But at this moment, Shen Yaoyue's voice came from not far away, with a hint of provocation: "Brother Qianyun, you must pay more attention to the concubine's place, so as not to let her ruin the reputation of the Shen family."

Shen Yiyao looked up, her eyes meeting Shen Yaoyue's. She sneered, but her heart was already rife with turmoil. Although Shen Yaoyue and Shen Qianyun hadn't said anything explicitly, the controlling and possessive look in her eyes had already made it clear to Shen Yiyao. She knew that Shen Yaoyue must have a hidden secret, and Shen Qianyun was the "man" she relied on.

"Shen Yaoyue, you don't have to pretend to be ignorant anymore." Shen Yiyao secretly became ruthless in her heart, wanting to forcibly break this unbearable restraint.

A surge of anger surged in Shen Yiyao's heart, and she almost couldn't help but rush forward to confront Shen Yaoyue, but she knew very well that any impulse at this moment would bring greater trouble.

She suppressed her inner emotions and whispered, "If I want to stay, I will stay. If I want to leave, no one can stop me." Her tone was cold and firm, as if she was no longer the weak concubine.

As Shen Qianyun passed by her, he glanced at her lightly, as if examining her with a scrutinizing gaze. His gaze was devoid of emotion, even carrying a hint of indifference and impatience, as if her existence wasn't worthy of his attention. To Shen Qianyun, the concubine's daughter was nothing more than an insignificant existence; her struggles and resistance meant nothing to him.

Shen Yaoyue's eyes were cold, and she was obviously dissatisfied with Shen Yiyao's attitude. "You'd better remember your status, Shen Yiyao. A concubine's daughter can never turn things around. Do you think the Shen family will tolerate someone like you who doesn't know how to judge yourself?"

Her words pierced Shen Yiyao's heart like a needle, but she still had no intention of retreating. She knew she had to find a way out of this complex situation. Since she couldn't change her fate, she had to learn to control what she could.

As night fell, the courtyard of the Shen Mansion was as quiet as water, only the occasional cries of night crows breaking the stillness. Shen Yiyao walked alone on the stone path in the courtyard. Everything around her seemed peaceful, but the waves in her heart had not subsided at all.

Tonight, she had to make a decision. She could no longer sit there and wait for fate to decide what to do. Instead, she had to take the initiative and change everything.

She took a deep breath and walked towards the Shen Mansion's study. The door was unlocked, and a faint candlelight shone through the window. Shen Qianyun was sitting at the table, his expression grim. The scroll in his hand was not fully opened, as if he was still pondering something.

Shen Yiyao walked to the door and stood there for a while before pushing it open. Shen Qianyun looked up, a hint of confusion flashed in his eyes, but he didn't say anything.

"What do you want?" he asked in that cold tone.

Shen Yiyao didn't answer immediately. Instead, she quietly walked to the table and said softly, "Shen Qianyun, I don't want to be that concubine who is manipulated by others anymore."

When she said this, her heart skipped a beat and she seemed to feel an unprecedented sense of relief.

Shen Qianyun narrowed his eyes, and the coldness between his brows became even stronger: "What do you want to do now?" There was no surprise in his tone, as if he had already anticipated her reaction.

Shen Yiyao looked him straight in the eye without flinching: "I want to control my own destiny and no longer let anyone else decide my future."

Her voice was clear and firm, with a determination she had never heard before.

At this moment, she finally made the decision she had never dared to make before - she wanted to take back her own power in this strange world.
