Oritis in the world of Detective Conan
Chapter 42: Experimental Group in the "Cocoon" (Part )
The three little ones were obviously frightened by Cogan's appearance.
Ayumi whispered beside her: "This aunt's face is so scary."
Genta and Mitsuhiko also nodded in agreement.
"She must have been injected with some drug to become like that. This lady is obviously only around thirty years old." Haibara whispered in Conan's ear.
Cogan came to the hall with a cane and sat down, and Philip nodded slightly to her.
"Mr. Philip just said that the last guest has not arrived yet?" Xiaolan asked Philip as they sat on the sofa with everyone else.
"Look at the invitation list." Philip put the book down again. "The last guest is a man named Jack."
"Jack?" Hearing this name, Conan thought of Jack the Ripper.
"Yes, a student of James Whistler, a famous artist influenced by Edgar Degas."
As a few people were chatting, another person walked into the hall.
Conan quickly stood up and looked at the person who might be related to Jack the Ripper.
A tall and thin man, his shoulders were wet with rain, but his trouser legs and shoes were very clean, so he probably didn't come from a long journey.
"You're finally here, Mr. Jack." Philip closed the book, stood up and greeted Jack.
Mr. Jack didn't respond immediately. Instead, he turned his back to clean his umbrella and wiped his hands with a handkerchief. Then he turned around and replied politely, but with a hint of awkwardness: "I'm so sorry, it's hard to be polite in such bad weather."
Conan noticed that there was no change in his expression, not even a hint of apology.
At this time, the butler notified several people to go for dinner. After dinner, everyone came to the living room on the west side to rest.
Several people began to introduce themselves, and Conan noticed that Mr. Jack was quite strange.
When he used a handkerchief, he kept wiping his fingertips repeatedly, even though there was no stain on them. When Ms. Cogan mentioned that she was a clerk, he smiled strangely.
Afterwards, the detective team strolled around the manor, and Conan noticed that the little girl seemed very familiar with the structure of the place. The decorations in the manor also had the Greco-Roman style, and even the statues displayed included the same Muse statues as those in the Delos Manor.
Conan, full of suspicion, asked the little girl, "Alice, have you or Uncle Orpheus ever been to this Oritis Manor? Many of the layouts here are very similar to the Delos Manor, and you seem to know this place very well."
"Maybe Dad incorporated a bit of my family's structure into the script when he was writing it, and then Noah's Ark just copied it."
The little girl's explanation did not dispel Conan's doubts, but the three little ones seemed to have made new discoveries.
Ayumi: "Look, it's Ms. Cogan and Mr. Jack."
Conan stopped thinking and looked in the direction Ayumi pointed. Cogan and Jack were standing in front of a painting.
"It's a really good piece of work. I don't think you would disagree." Jack's voice came.
"Just like the sound of your footsteps, it's a rhythm I appreciate. Tick, tick, tick, tick..."
"I'm afraid I don't have any real insights into art," Cogan replied from the sidelines.
"Don't worry, there is no right or wrong in art itself, just like there is no absolute good or bad in the world."
"But from my aesthetic point of view, it would be more beautiful if these little cuties closed their eyes." Jack suddenly chuckled.
Cogan shook his head. "I still prefer the way people stare at their own reflection in the mirror."
Several people gradually approached the two people who were talking.
"Ah, another beautiful lady. I wonder if I would have the honor to paint a picture for you?" Jack bowed to Xiaolan when he saw her.
"Hey, me? I may not have any experience as a model..." Xiaolan hesitated in the face of Jack's invitation.
"It's okay, you can give me an answer at any time." Jack smiled lightly and left.
After Jack disappeared at the end of the corridor, Cogan warned the others, "Miss Maori, you'd better not get close to that man. The tone of his voice reminds me of the popular song about White Sands Street in London right now."
"Ms. Cogan, do you know what the song is?" Conan asked Cogan.
"That little song was originally popular in the Whitechapel area. It seems to be about Jack the Ripper, who committed five murders. The owner of the manor invited me here to find the records in those files."
"So, detectives, what brings you to the manor?"
"We are here to investigate Jack the Ripper," Conan replied.
"Really? Then you must be careful of Mr. Jack." Cogan said and turned away.
Several people decided to talk to Philip again.
Philip was still reading the book on the sofa.
"Good evening, Mr. Philip." The little girl took the initiative to speak to Philip.
"Hello, detectives, what's up?"
"Does Mr. Philip know anything about Jack the Ripper?" Conan asked.
"Oh, Jack the Ripper, he's the criminal of my dreams."
"Dream come true?"
"That's right. I've been studying criminology for many years. Just by looking at a person's face, I can tell if they have criminal tendencies."
"But isn't this judgment too extreme? If some people have the same facial features but have never committed a crime, we can't call them criminals." Xiaolan disagreed.
"That's the whole thing. If there's nothing else, we should meet in the restaurant later. The owner of the manor wants us to meet there in half an hour."
Half an hour later, everyone gathered in the restaurant and three more pieces of letter paper appeared on the table.
Several people took turns reading the contents of the three letters.
Conan was shocked by the contents of the letter, which clearly stated the "crimes" of Philip, Cogan and Jack.
First up is Philip, a scholar obsessed with physiognomy and criminology. Because he offended many people, his sister was murdered by her enemies and her body was doused in wax and thrown in a bathtub. Furious, Philip sought out the murderer and made a wax figure of him alive. From then on, whenever he encountered someone who matched his criminal profile, he would make a wax figure of them as an exhibit of his "sin."
Then there's Cogan, who comes from a family of legal scholars. Due to family pressure and his brother's corruption and disregard for justice, Cogan poisons his brother's food to uphold justice, ultimately replacing him as the new Supreme Court Justice.
Finally, there's Jack, who is clearly Jack the Ripper himself. He seems to suffer from a split personality disorder. His normal personality considers himself an artist, while his Ripper personality also considers himself an artist, though his art is always gory. At this point, the two personalities seem to be getting closer and closer, almost indistinguishable from each other.
Conan took a deep breath. The three people in front of him all had special skills. He was definitely no match for them with just the few people on his side.
If you think about it, Mr. Phillips is obsessed with judging the crime, Ms. Cogan is obsessed with judging the injustice, and as for Jack, he should be the one being judged. But would a villain like the Ripper be willing to be judged?
