Oritis in the world of Detective Conan

Chapter 104: The Voyage of Oceanus (Part 7)

"Is Miss Cartographer all right now?" the composer asked the taxidermist.

"I've checked her out. She's been poisoned by an unknown toxin and hasn't woken up yet. However, her condition is stable and she's not in danger of death."

"The research team unanimously agreed that the expedition should continue. After all, the cartographer's wish is to prove that her father's experiences are true."

Conan held up the syringe and walked up to the taxidermist: "Hey, taxidermist sister, this syringe is a bit similar to the one on you."

Subaru Okiya also added: "Indeed, are these medical devices distributed uniformly on the ship?"

"These are the medical equipment and medicines on board." The taxidermist showed everyone her emergency medical kit, which contained a syringe and simple medical tools and medicines.

"But theoretically, the medical supplies should only be distributed to me. Ordinary engineers won't get them."

Conan immediately deepened his suspicion of the specimen collector. After all, it was too easy to put a used syringe in someone else's room to frame them.

Several people dispersed in the banquet hall, and Conan followed Subaru Okiya to the deck. Although the storm had dissipated, the weather was still gloomy.

"Mr. Okiya, that taxidermist lady is really suspicious."

"How to say?"

"Although the engineer had a motive to attack the cartographer, judging by his reaction, he doesn't seem to be the actual murderer."

"So you're suspicious of the taxidermist lady who's the only one with access to medical supplies?"

"I'm not sure yet. Right now, all the evidence points to the engineer. I wonder if he has something he's hiding that he hasn't had time to reveal."

The appearance of the mercenary interrupted their conversation.

"As expected, detectives have a natural attraction to cases. Wherever you go, there are cases." The mercenary teased Conan.

Subaru Okiya turned to look at the mercenary: "You seem to be very concerned about this case as well. Do you have any clues?"

"You're all focused on the case. I'm interested in what kind of toxin the cartographer was poisoned with. Remember the jellyfish that was fished out earlier?"

"Are you saying that the cartographer was poisoned by the jellyfish that live in this sea area?"

The mercenary rested his hands on the railing. "I'm not sure yet, but the newcomer's experiments have probably already begun, and everyone on this ship will be his 'samples'."

"'If we don't find him, everyone on the ship will be in danger', so this is what you mean?" Looking at the foggy sea, Conan lowered his head and thought.

Subaru Okiya noticed something, so he started chatting with the mercenary: "Come to think of it, since you got on board, you've told us quite a bit about Oritis. Won't you be treated as a traitor and liquidated?"

"No." The mercenary turned around. "Although you may find it incredible, this kind of simple character information is actually the easiest to obtain here."

"For the people in the manor, as long as the truly confidential information is not leaked, we will not be liquidated. Of course, if other organizations knew that I had joined another organization, they would probably treat me as an undercover agent and liquidate me."

Subaru Okiya knew that he was implying that his true identity should not be revealed to the Black Organization, but he continued to ask, "What do you mean by truly confidential information?"

"You can't ask any of the 'survivors' for information."

"Then perhaps I should ask the 'Regulator'?"

"I advise you not to do this. Not all supervisors can get along with people in a normal way."

Subaru Okiya felt somewhat helpless. Most of the information about the Orientis Organization was revealed by these members themselves, as if they didn't care at all about it being leaked. Perhaps the real secret was related to the so-called "elixir of life"?

Conan listened to their conversation and interrupted, "Come to think of it, I've always wanted to ask, what criteria does the Oritis Organization use to recruit members? Your code names seem to be closely related to your professions."

"The codenames are indeed related to their professions, but I can't say for sure what the criteria are for recruiting members. We don't have anything in common at all."

"Ah, there is still one thing in common." The mercenary seemed to have thought of something.

"What is it?" Conan opened his eyes wide and prepared to take note of it carefully.

"Happy people don't come to the manor." After the mercenary said this, he leaned on the railing and looked at the sea shrouded in thick fog.

Conan had heard such remarks from the supervisor before, but there was still too little useful information. This only meant that those who joined the Oritis organization had probably experienced some kind of misfortune, and they had to figure out the rest of the information on their own.

As for the purpose of the Oritis Organization, Conan doesn't think they are just pursuing immortality. Their purpose is likely to be even more crazy...

The next day soon arrived. The sailors were patrolling the decks and corridors. The novelist and the composer found Conan and Subaru Okiya. They believed that the engineer might know the secret of the shipwreck twenty-five years ago. If they could get the truth from him, they might be able to understand what the newcomer from Oritis wanted to do on this ship.

The composer seemed in better spirits today. "I've confirmed with the taxidermist that the ship will arrive at its destination—the center of the Oceanus Sea—this afternoon."

"In other words, if we want to uncover the truth, we have to do it now, right?" Conan pushed his glasses.

So they went together to the room where the engineer was imprisoned, and the sailors guarding the room did not stop them.

The engineer sat in the middle of the room, looking more haggard and numb than before.

Subaru Okiya was the first to ask, "Mr. Engineer, could you tell us why you were outside Ms. Cartographer's room? I looked through yesterday's duty log, and your patrol area wasn't there."

The engineer spoke haltingly: "I just heard a strange noise, so I rushed over..."

Conan jumped out: "But the engine room and the passenger cabin are not on the same floor at all, and the storm yesterday was very strong, so any noise would be drowned out by the sound of the waves."

The engineer lowered his head even more, seemingly unwilling to continue.

Novelist: "You are using lies to create new doubts for yourself. I've looked through the materials. Are you trying to find the truth about your friend's shipwreck 25 years ago?"

The engineer raised his head again.

"The friendship between you and your friend is genuine. I believe you wouldn't want this pure friendship to be obscured by the shadow of sin."

The mercenary arrived at the scene. He waved the document in his hand and said, "If you remain silent, you and your friends will only bear more infamy."

The mercenary handed the information to the engineer, who suddenly became very emotional. "Martin only stood up to stop Professor Brownlee out of his own utilitarianism and morality. It's obvious that only Professor Schelling can point us in the right direction..."

The engineer took a few deep breaths and said, "Yes, I went to the cartographer's room on my own. I just wanted to confirm what happened to Professor Brownlee with her."

"But when I arrived, the cartographer had already fallen to the ground, unconscious. I..."

Before the engineer could finish his words, his expression began to become dazed, his pupils began to dilate, his limbs twitched slightly, and he no longer responded to what everyone said, but just kept repeating what happened twenty-five years ago.
