Crossing the famine to find the white moonlight

Chapter 5 Obtaining Supplies from the System for the First Time

Ye Wan silently operated the system, cautiously exchanging a small amount of dry food and water. Carefully removing these supplies from the system interface, she looked at the two dry biscuits and a water bottle that suddenly appeared in her hands, feeling a mixture of excitement and gratitude. The existence of the system was undoubtedly her confidence in surviving in these turbulent times, but she also understood that this confidence must be kept secret, otherwise, if known, it would likely bring disaster to herself and Xiaotong.

She quietly hid the dry food in her rag bag and wrapped the water bottle in worn-out fabric and tucked it into the corner of the tattered straw mat. At this moment, she had only one thought in her mind: in this chaotic world full of dangers, she could not reveal any resources casually and must be cautious to avoid unnecessary trouble.

Ye Wan pulled out a small piece of dry biscuit from her bag, broke it into several small pieces, and gently stuffed it into Xiaotong's mouth. Xiaotong was in a state of semi-drowsiness from hunger. Suddenly, he felt the food in his mouth and opened his eyes. A hint of confusion and surprise appeared on his face. Ye Wan gently patted his back and said softly, "Xiaotong, eat slowly and don't choke."

Xiaotong held the dry biscuit in his mouth, his eyes filled with dependence. He knew this was a rare treat, and despite being extremely hungry, he tried not to eat too quickly. Ye Wan felt a pang of pain at Xiaotong's cautious demeanor, yet also felt that her forbearance and effort were worth it. She secretly vowed to protect Xiaotong and keep him alive in this chaotic world, no matter how hard it would be.

When Xiaotong had almost finished eating, Ye Wan took out the kettle, scooped up a small amount of water in her hands, and carefully fed him. Xiaotong sipped it gently, his eyes gentle and satisfied, looking at his mother with eyes full of trust and attachment. Ye Wan's heart was warmed. She gently hugged Xiaotong and whispered, "Don't be afraid, Xiaotong, mother will protect you."

Ye Wan knew she had to conserve these hard-earned resources. She took out a small piece of dry food and chewed it silently. Her mouth was dry, but she couldn't help but feel satisfied. A few bites of dry biscuits were enough to give her body a little strength. Her eyes became more determined, and her heart gained a glimmer of hope for the future.

In the days that followed, Ye Wan continued to use the system cautiously, learning how to exchange supplies appropriately. She discovered that the system had a limit on supply exchange, and if a large amount was exchanged in a short period of time, the system would issue a warning. Therefore, she only exchanged small amounts of dry food and water at a time to avoid alerting the system, and also to avoid making her actions too conspicuous.

One evening, Ye Wan returned to Ye Cui Niang's residence with a small amount of water and dry food. Although Ye Cui Niang had always been indifferent and distant to her, Ye Wan still hoped deep down that her mother would appreciate her filial piety, perhaps it would ease the family's feelings. She handed the dry food to Ye Cui Niang, trying to sound calm and natural. "Mother, this is the dry food and water I gathered from the mountains. Please eat at least a little."

A flicker of surprise crossed Ye Cui Niang's eyes when she saw the dry food, but she quickly regained her indifferent expression. Without saying anything, she took the food and began to eat slowly. Although she showed no gratitude, Ye Wan could see that she was hungry, and this brought a sense of relief to her heart. No matter how cold her mother was towards her, Ye Wan still felt that she had fulfilled her daughter's duty, a form of reparation for the past.

Ye Cuiniang's indifference only reaffirmed Ye Wan's resolve to conceal the system. She knew she couldn't let anyone see the extra food and water she had, or else it would arouse suspicion. She knew her mother had no affection for her, and Li Ruotao was always ready to find fault. Only by remaining silent and keeping a low profile could she ensure the safety of herself and Xiaotong in this situation.

In the dead of night, Ye Wan hid the dry food she had redeemed from the system under a worn mat. She was well aware that these supplies were the lifeblood of her and Xiaotong. She carefully divided the dry food into small portions, taking them as needed each day to ensure that Xiaotong would not go hungry again.

As she became more proficient in the system, Ye Wan began to explore more complex operations. She discovered that the system not only provided basic supplies but also some essential household items, such as clean cloth, sewing needles and thread, and even a small amount of medicine. She quickly learned how to use these resources to mend clothes and make simple protective gear, ensuring she could better protect herself and Xiaotong in the chaotic world.

A few days later, Li Ruotao's sarcastic remarks were heard again in the village. She deliberately said loudly in front of others, "Oh, I'm surprised. How can that damn girl Ye Wan be so energetic these days? Could it be that she got lucky and food fell from the sky?"

Li Ruotao's voice was thick with sarcasm, intended to make the villagers suspicious of Ye Wan. Ye Wan did not respond, remaining calm. She knew that if she did, it would only lead to more speculation. She simply buried her head in her work, feigning indifference.

Returning to her shabby hut at night, Ye Wan breathed a sigh of relief, realizing she had to be even more careful and not let anyone notice. She reviewed the supplies provided by the system, carefully sorted them, and hid some of them in a secluded area outside the village, ready for emergency use.

She gradually learned how to manage system resources, accurately calculating daily allowances for dry food and water. While the supplies provided by the system were sufficient to keep her and her child fed and clothed, they could not be squandered. Ye Wan knew that every drop of food and water was hard-earned. Therefore, she became increasingly cautious in her use of system resources, ensuring she had an emergency reserve even in the most difficult of times.

With the system's help, Ye Wan gradually found support in her life. No longer pinning her hopes on her family, she focused on her own and Xiaotong's survival. She silently endured the village's cold stares and rumors, secretly accumulating strength, and gradually transformed the system's supplies into daily necessities, allowing her to survive safely in this turbulent world.

Ye Wan knew that the system wasn't omnipotent, but it gave her a glimmer of hope in this difficult environment. She was no longer the helpless village girl, but a mother with secret powers, and her inner faith gradually strengthened.

She looked at the sleeping Xiaotong and gently stroked his hair, her heart filled with hope and responsibility. She secretly made up her mind that no matter how difficult the future would be, she would not give up easily.
