Crossing the famine to find the white moonlight

Chapter 12 Helping the Elderly and the Weak for the First Time

As night fell, the fleeing group paused in the wilderness. Everyone huddled together or lay on the ground, exhausted. The day's journey had nearly exhausted everyone. Hunger and thirst had weakened them. Some elderly people even lay on the ground, gasping for breath, their eyes filled with weakness and despair. Ye Wan looked around, seeing the frail elderly, women, and children, and a wave of sadness welled up in her heart.

She knew that without food, these elderly people, women, and children would not be able to hold on any longer. She struggled internally. Although Xiaotong and she were running low on food, she understood that she was luckier than these people, having the support of the system, while these elderly and weak people could only watch helplessly as fate would take their course.

As night fell, Ye Wan quietly opened the system and carefully exchanged a few pieces of dry food and a small bag of water. She carefully hid the food and water in her bag, making sure not to attract attention. Then, she quietly approached the frail elderly, women, and children, and gently awoke them.

The first was a gray-haired old man lying on the ground, his cracked lips slightly parted, his eyes filled with fatigue and helplessness. Ye Wan gently passed a small piece of dry food to his mouth and said softly, "Uncle, please eat something. Only by eating can you continue to move forward."

The old man opened his eyes and saw Ye Wan's face and the rations in her hands. A hint of surprise and gratitude flashed in his eyes. He took the rations with trembling hands, choking and unable to speak. He slowly and carefully placed the rations in his mouth, chewing them meticulously. Ye Wan watched him eat with such care, as if they were the most precious food in the world, and a pang of sadness washed over her. She nodded gently and walked towards the other frail woman.

Beside the woman lay a frail little girl, her eyes closed, seemingly too weak to even cry out. Ye Wan carefully handed the kettle to the woman and whispered, "Give the child some water. She looks so weak." Tears welled up in the woman's eyes as she sobbed and thanked her repeatedly. With trembling hands, she took the kettle and carefully fed the child.

The little girl slowly opened her eyes, spotted the water bottle in her mother's hand, and took a sip, a glimmer of hope in her eyes. Ye Wan couldn't help but feel relieved at this sight. She knew that this small sip of water might not completely change their fate, but it would at least help them survive a few more days, giving them a glimmer of hope.

Ye Wan continued to quietly walk through the ranks, distributing as much rations as possible to the weakest. Her movements were gentle, deliberately avoiding attention and causing unnecessary controversy. Every elderly man and woman, as they accepted the rations, showed gratitude. Many choked back their thanks, whispering softly and even offering weak blessings to her and her family.

These elderly people and women might have long since given up hope, believing their fate to be nothing more than a speck of dust in the wilderness, sooner or later buried by the wind and sand. But Ye Wan's small piece of dry food seemed to have ignited a spark of hope for them. The gratitude in their eyes warmed Ye Wan's heart. She understood that these elderly and weak people didn't expect much help in these troubled times, but just a helping hand was the greatest comfort to them.

After all the dry food was distributed, Ye Wan gently returned to Xiaotong and her mother. Looking at the sleeping Xiaotong, she felt a sense of comfort and satisfaction. She knew that her contribution might be insignificant, but it was precisely this small amount of help that gave these elderly and children a little more support in their despair. She sighed softly and silently resolved that if she had the opportunity in the future, she would continue to use the system's resources to help more elderly and vulnerable people and bring them some warmth.

The next morning, the team set out again. Ye Wan noticed that the elderly men and women who had been helped the previous night, though still frail, had a more determined look on their faces, and their steps seemed a little more powerful. She felt relieved, knowing that her actions the previous night had not been in vain.

As the days went by, Ye Wan's kindness gradually became known to some of the team members. Although she never stated the source of her help, her actions made more and more elderly and vulnerable people grateful to her. Several elderly people even quietly stood by her side during the journey. Although they didn't have much power to protect her, their silent support warmed her heart.

The women and children in the group gradually began to look at her with trust, occasionally asking in a low voice if she needed help. Although most of them had nothing, their eyes were filled with kindness and gratitude. This trust comforted Ye Wan and also strengthened her confidence to continue helping them.

A few days later, an old woman in the group quietly approached Ye Wan and whispered to her, "Child, last night I saw you secretly distributing food to those children and the elderly. You are a kind and good girl. If you need anything in the future, just tell me and I will do my best to help you."

Ye Wan was slightly startled, then smiled and quietly thanked him. She didn't explain much, but simply said, "Auntie, we're all living beings, so any help is appreciated."

The old woman patted her hands, her eyes filled with tenderness and respect. She nodded slowly, "It's been a difficult journey, and we're all so lucky to have a girl like you. If you encounter any difficulties, I will keep my mouth shut for you."

Ye Wan nodded, feeling a warm feeling in her heart. She realized that her actions not only helped those in need but also earned her the trust of people on this difficult journey of fleeing famine. She knew that this trust might bring her greater security and support in the future.

In the stillness of the night, Ye Wan gently stroked Xiaotong's head, silently pondering her next steps. She understood that while the supplies provided by the system were a support, they couldn't be used indefinitely. She had to remain cautious and allocate resources wisely to ensure she and her family could survive in this critical moment.

She knew the journey would be long and fraught with unknown dangers and challenges. But she remained resolute: on this journey, she would not only protect her family but also help those truly in need. She believed the kindness she sowed would trickle down, nourishing every soul desperate to survive.

Ye Wan's heart was filled with faith. She was determined to survive in this chaotic world, leading Xiaotong, her mother, and even the elderly and the weak to find a safe place. Her eyes gleamed with determination and tenderness, as if this journey of escape had become her new mission.
