Chapter 67 I used to be a scavenger
Due to the urgency of the situation, the police borrowed a room in the hotel as a temporary interrogation room. Maori Kogoro was entrusted with the interrogation, while Conan watched quietly from the side, his eyes full of contemplation.
Chen Shuo and Mao Lilan were invited to the interrogation room again. Kogoro asked in a serious tone: "According to the deceased's time of death, it was ten o'clock in the evening. Where were you at the time?"
"Xiaolan and I are watching the stars in the lounge on the rooftop." Chen Shuo looked at Maori Kogoro indifferently, as if they were chatting about family matters, with a relaxed attitude.
"Can anyone prove what you said?" Kogoro asked, frowning slightly.
"Maeda Satoshi could, but he couldn't be sure that he was on the roof at ten o'clock." Chen Shuo paused, knowing in his heart that he knew the time was after ten o'clock, even accurate to the second, but this was his professional skill after all and could not be used as evidence.
After Chen Shuo finished questioning, it was Xiaolan's turn. A moment later, Mao Lilan also came out, looking disappointed. She couldn't prove her alibi. Chen Shuo said nothing, but walked over and hugged Mao Lilan, offering silent comfort. He knew this was Xiaolan's first time being listed as a suspect, and she must be feeling uncomfortable.
The interrogation was completed in an orderly manner, and when the results came out, everyone present was shocked: no one had a perfect alibi! Even the testimonies of Chen Shuo and Mao Lilan, who had initially been given alibis by the police, were overturned.
"So, we are all suspects now?" Mao Lilan frowned, looking a little depressed.
Chen Shuo hugged Xiaolan in his arms and comforted her softly: "It's okay, Xiaolan, this is normal."
Coming out of the interrogation room, Kogoro Maori heard the conversation between the two and felt very uncomfortable. He was dissatisfied with his daughter and friend being listed as suspects, but he didn't say anything. His professionalism was fully demonstrated at this moment. If he didn't have a perfect alibi, he would not have participated in the interrogation.
"Don't worry, Xiaolan!" Kogoro said firmly, "I don't believe my daughter and friend would do such a thing. I will definitely prove your innocence!"
"Yes, we will find evidence!" Conan was not to be outdone, with a determined light flashing in his eyes.
"Thank you, Dad, thank you Conan!" Ran Mouri felt warm in her heart and thanked the two of them with a smile, feeling the support from her father and friends.
Chen Shuo also nodded to the two of them: "Please!"
---
After the interrogation, Mao Lilan was about to ask Chen Shuo to go back to the room to rest, but he refused. "You should go back with Ms. Sayama Akiko first. I have some things to investigate." Chen Shuo said seriously, frowning slightly.
"Brother Shuo, are you going to participate in the case?" Xiaolan asked in surprise.
"Since we're considered suspects, I can't just sit on the sidelines." Chen Shuo answered confidently, his eyes determined. Conan, who was about to return to his room, immediately became interested when he heard this, his eyes gleaming with curiosity. "Are you interested in the case? And what direction do you want to investigate?"
"Well, I have some ideas that need to be verified." Chen Shuo nodded, his thoughts already flying towards possible clues.
"Okay, be careful." Mao Lilan nodded obediently, then gently kissed Chen Shuo on the corner of his mouth and said with a smile: "This is encouragement." She pulled Sayama Akiko and walked towards the room with a sweet smile on her face.
Chen Shuo touched the corner of his mouth, a happy expression on his face, and thought to himself: "Xiao Lan is getting more and more lovely."
Conan on the side was biting his handkerchief silently, with a hint of hurt in his eyes, "Really, I also want such encouragement..." He muttered to himself, wishing he could get a little attention.
---
Kogoro Mouri, who was discussing the details of the case with Sango Yokomizo in the deceased's room 2101, was stunned when a police officer reported that Chen Shuo had some ideas he wanted to discuss. He looked shocked. In his impression, Chen Shuo was the kind of person who would avoid such troubles as far as possible, but this time he actually came to him on his own initiative.
"Really?" Kogoro Mouri asked in disbelief, and hurriedly waved his hand to signal the police to bring Chen Shuo in.
After a while, Chen Shuo walked into the room calmly and nodded to Maori Kogoro and Yokomizo Sango. His eyes were steady and there was no sign of panic.
"You actually have an idea? Tell me quickly." Kogoro Mouri asked curiously, his face full of confusion and expectation.
Chen Shuo glanced at the two of them and said without any nonsense, "I have some ideas about the case, but I can only explain them outside." He motioned for the two to follow him to the balcony.
When he reached the balcony, Chen Shuo first licked his fingers with his tongue, then stretched his hand out of the balcony, carefully feeling the direction and strength of the wind.
Henggou Chanwu was completely confused and couldn't help but frowning: "What the hell is Mr. Chen Shuo doing?"
Before Maori Kogoro could react, Chen Shuo suddenly snatched the cigarette from his mouth, casually held the cigarette out to the balcony, and observed the trajectory of the smoke.
"Hey! My cigarette..." Maori Kogoro wanted to protest with some dissatisfaction, but was interrupted by Chen Shuo's serious expression.
He carefully observed the direction and speed of the smoke being blown away by the wind, his expression focused, as if he were pondering something. Finally, he glanced thoughtfully at the place where the body had fallen, directly across from this room. Yokogami Chango, watching nearby, looked bewildered and couldn't help but ask anxiously, "What exactly does this mean, Mr. Chen Shuo?"
Conan and Maori Kogoro followed silently, their eyes shining, watching Chen Shuo's actions thoughtfully.
"The direction of the wind... seems to be inconsistent with the location where the deceased fell." Chen Shuo finally looked up and said, with a deep light flashing in his eyes.
"What's inconsistent?" Yokogouchanwu asked in surprise.
Chen Shuo didn't answer immediately. He just returned the cigarette to Maori Kogoro and smiled softly: "This is not the crime scene. The deceased did not die in this room!"
Henggou Chanwu was bewildered when he heard Chen Shuo's words. He stared at him blankly and couldn't help asking, "Why did you come to this conclusion?"
Chen Shuo didn't answer immediately. Instead, he took out a piece of paper and pen and began to quickly calculate. As he wrote, he explained, "In Izu, every night during this season, there's always a strong wind blowing. It's called the Princess Wind. It's a unique natural phenomenon here."
Maori Kogoro also became more focused, seemingly interested in Chen Shuo's thinking. Meanwhile, Conan stood aside, watching Chen Shuo's calculations intently, thinking to himself, "Princess wind? That's indeed a key factor. If the wind speed and direction are wrong, the drop location will be completely different."
Chen Shuo continued, "According to the wind speed and direction I just measured..." At this point, he stopped writing, turned around, and confidently showed everyone the results of his calculations.
His notebook was filled with densely packed formulas, confusing most people, but thankfully everyone could understand the conclusions. Chen Shuo raised his head and spoke firmly, "The results show that if the deceased fell from room 2101, they wouldn't have landed on the statue directly below the room. Furthermore, my room and Mao Lilan's are in the opposite direction of the wind from the statue, making it even more unlikely."
Yokoguro Chanwu blinked and asked thoughtfully, "Then where will he end up?"
"According to my calculations," Chen Shuo tore off the paper and handed it to Yokomizo Sango, continuing, "Combining the distribution of all the suspects' rooms, the most likely crime scene is Maeda Satoshi and Sayama Akiko's room—room 1901."
Conan's mind suddenly flashed with inspiration, and a look of surprise crossed his face. He thought to himself, "Sure enough, Brother Shuo's reasoning coincides with mine. The location where the deceased fell is closely related to the wind speed, which means he was most likely moved intentionally!"
Maori Kogoro and Yokomizo Sango looked at each other, both shocked. As Kogoro gathered his thoughts, he exclaimed, "You're truly amazing! You were able to deduce such important information from wind speed and direction."
"Could it be that the dead were moved there?" Henggou Chanwu asked in confusion, with a gleam of doubt in his eyes.
"That's what you need to investigate." Chen Shuo put away his notebook and shrugged. "I've said everything I wanted to say. The rest is up to you guys."
Seeing Chen Shuo walk away so casually after saying that, Kogoro Mouri and Conan couldn't help but look at each other and couldn't help but complain.
"This guy really has no curiosity at all." Maori Kogoro scratched his head, looking helpless. "He was the one who provided the most important clue, and he walked away so easily."
Conan smiled bitterly in his heart: "He is really different from others. He is so indifferent at a time like this."
At this moment, Henggou Chanwu stared blankly at the calculation results in his hand, looking at Chen Shuo's back with a puzzled look on his face. He couldn't help but complain loudly, "Hey! What on earth do you do? How can you calculate such a professional thing?"
Chen Shuo paused for a moment, as if thinking casually, then turned around and said in a firm tone, "I used to be a street sweeper."
When Maori Kogoro and Conan heard this answer, the corners of their mouths twitched at the same time. They couldn't help but scream in their hearts: "How dare you talk nonsense? This answer is too perfunctory."
Henggou Chanwu was completely confused. He scratched his head and muttered blankly, "How could a scavenger know so much? Do I have some misunderstanding about the scavenger profession?"
Maori Kogoro shook his head helplessly, while Conan laughed secretly. Chen Shuo's back gradually disappeared into the distance. Although his answer was nonsense, it was exactly Chen Shuo's style, concise and straightforward, unwilling to waste words, especially when it came to such troublesome matters, he always maintained his own cool attitude.
---
Returning to the room, Chen Shuo opened the door and saw Mao Lilan sitting on the bed, her hands clasped tightly, her head lowered, and her expression seemed a little depressed and tangled. Chen Shuo couldn't help but feel nervous, thinking that Xiaolan might still be worried about becoming a suspect.
He walked to the bed, sat down gently, pulled Mao Lilan over, let her lie on her side in his arms, stroked her shoulders with his hands, and whispered comfortingly: "Don't worry, Xiaolan, don't think too much. The investigation just now, I have ruled out the suspicion of both of us, everything will be fine."
Mao Lilan leaned against Chen Shuo's chest, feeling his warm embrace, but the heavy feeling pressing on her heart still did not dissipate. Her eyes were a little dazed, as if she was thinking about something important, and finally she just shook her head.
"That's not it..." Her voice was muffled, almost inaudible. Mao Lilan buried her head even deeper, as if unwilling to meet Chen Shuo's gaze. She gently grasped Chen Shuo's collar with both hands, her fingertips slightly white, and one could sense the struggle within her.
Chen Shuo frowned, lowered his head and looked at Xiaolan in his arms, and asked softly, "What on earth is going on that has you so troubled?"
Mao Lilan was silent for a long time, took a deep breath, and then slowly said: "I... probably know who the murderer is."
Chen Shuo was stunned for a moment, somewhat surprised. He looked down at Xiaolan. Her brows were furrowed, and her eyes showed a hint of unease and helplessness. It was clear that she was experiencing a very complicated situation. This made him feel distressed.
"Do you know who the murderer is?" Chen Shuo repeated in a low voice, reaching out to gently lift Mao Lilan's chin and make her look at him. He noticed the contradiction and pain hidden in her eyes, and she seemed reluctant to give the answer.
Mao Lilan nodded, but did not continue. She simply leaned against Chen Shuo, as if trying to draw some strength from his embrace. Her voice was still muffled: "But I... I'm not sure. I don't know how to face it."
Chen Shuo sensed her helplessness. He hugged her tighter and gently comforted her, "Xiao Lan, no matter what you find, you can tell me. Let's face it together, okay?"
Mao Lilan's tears welled up in her eyes. She bit her lips tightly, then finally exhaled deeply and replied softly, "Okay... Chen Shuo, I just can't accept it..."
"Don't worry, you can talk to me and I will help you." Chen Shuo said firmly, his voice full of strength.
Mao Lilan finally smiled in his arms, tears falling, but she felt at ease. She knew that no matter what happened, Chen Shuo would be by her side, supporting her and protecting her.
