Chapter 34: The Will to Survive Rekindles

The will to survive in desperate situation is rekindled

The cold gleam of the sword stung my eyes, and the breath of death washed over me like a tide. Could it be that Yang'er and I were really going to die here? I closed my eyes in despair.

But the expected excruciating pain didn't come, only a gentle breeze brushing my cheek. Puzzled, I opened my eyes and saw an elderly man in plain clothes appear before me. With his back to me, he stood tall and straight, emanating a peaceful aura that defied the surrounding darkness. Like a beacon in the darkness, he dispelled the gloom that enveloped me.

"Who are you?!" Wei Qing was stunned when she saw the old man appear, and then she asked angrily, "If you know what's good for you, don't meddle in other people's business!"

The old man ignored Wei Qing. He simply turned slowly, his deep eyes seeming to see through everything in the world, yet filled with compassion and mercy. I stared at him blankly, a strange sense of familiarity welling up in my heart, yet I couldn't recall where I had seen him before.

"You...you are..." I opened my mouth, but no words came out.

The old man smiled at me, without saying anything, but gently raised his hand to dissolve the sword energy that Wei Qing was stabbing at me. Wei Qing was shocked and angry when she saw that her attack was easily dispelled. She was about to attack again, but was stopped by the old man's eyes.

"You guys go." The old man's tone was calm, but with unquestionable majesty.

"Leave? Humph, who do you think you are to order us around?" Hao Shuang sneered disdainfully, "Wei Yao and Hao Yang must both die today!"

The old man ignored Hao Shuang's shouting. He just slowly raised his hand, and a powerful force instantly pushed Hao Shuang and the others back several steps. They looked at the old man in disbelief, their eyes filled with fear and terror.

"You are no match for him. Leave quickly. I can pretend that nothing happened." The old man said lightly, but his tone revealed an unquestionable majesty.

Wei Xue gritted her teeth unwillingly, but finally compromised. She glared at me fiercely, said "You're lucky," and left with the others in disgrace.

Watching them leave, I breathed a sigh of relief, my heart finally at ease. I turned to look at the old man, and just as I was about to ask about his identity, I found that he was already walking towards me and Hao Yang.

What does he... want to do?

The old man walked over to me and gently lifted me up. His hands were warm and strong, like a warm current, slowly flowing into my heart, dispelling the chill and fear within. I looked up at him, his eyes deep and calm, as if he could see through my heart, yet filled with encouragement and hope.

"Child, don't give up hope." The old man's voice was low and kind, like the warm sun in winter, warming my heart. "You have great potential within you, but you haven't discovered it yet."

His words were like a flash of lightning, piercing the haze in my heart and illuminating the way forward. Looking at the old man, a flicker of hope ignited in my heart. Yes, I can't just give up. I still have Yang'er, and I still want to change my fate. I can't just fall down like this!

I took a deep breath and turned my gaze to Hao Yang, who lay on the ground. He was pale, his breath was weak, and he looked like he would leave me at any moment. My heart ached like a knife. I held his hand tightly, feeling his weak breath.

"Yang'er, you must hold on, we will definitely get better..." I whispered softly, my voice full of determination and hope.

Elder Wei and Master Hao also came over, their faces full of worry and concern. The appearance of the mysterious old man gave them hope and also cheered them up.

"Senior, may I ask who you are..." Elder Wei stepped forward and asked respectfully.

The old man did not answer Elder Wei's question. He just looked around with a deep and distant gaze.

"Children, the road ahead is long, filled with challenges and dangers, but you must remember that hope always exists. As long as you don't give up, you will be able to overcome all difficulties." The old man said in a deep voice, "I can only help you so far. The road ahead still needs you to walk your own path."

After saying this, the old man turned around and was about to leave.

"Senior, please stay!" I hurriedly called out to the old man, "You still haven't told me who you are and why you want to help us?"

The old man stopped but did not turn back. He simply said, "I am just a traveler passing by. I saw you were in trouble and offered my help. As for my name, it is not important."

The old man's figure gradually receded into the night. I gazed at his departure, my heart filled with gratitude and confusion. Who was he? Why was he here? Why was he helping us?

At this moment, Hao Shuang suddenly became furious. He pointed in the direction where the mysterious old man left and roared, "Damn old man, you ruined my good thing, I won't let you go!"

After saying that, he rushed towards the direction the old man left without hesitation...

"Damn old man, you ruined my plan. I won't let you go!" Hao Shuang's furious voice exploded in my ears like thunder. Before I could react, he had already turned into a shadow, rushing madly in the direction where the old man disappeared.

I was startled and subconsciously tried to stop him, but Elder Wei stopped me. "Yao'er, he's lost his mind. It's too dangerous for you to chase him now."

I could only watch Hao Shuang chasing the old man, feeling extremely anxious. Although the old man looked unfathomable, Hao Shuang was after all...

Just as I was beginning to worry, a golden light suddenly shone through the otherwise deserted night. The old man waved his hand lightly, and a powerful force toppled Hao Shuang to the ground. He curled up in agony, unable to get up for a long time.

"Master!" Wei Xue exclaimed, and without caring about anything else, she hurried to Hao Shuang to check his injuries.

"Old man, who are you? Why do you want to interfere in our affairs?" Wei Xue helped Hao Shuang up and glared at the old man fiercely, his eyes full of resentment and fear.

Facing Wei Xue's questioning, the old man said nothing, but just glanced at her lightly. His eyes seemed to be able to see through everything, which made Wei Xue feel uneasy.

"Junior sister, don't waste time talking to him, let's go together!" Hao Shuang struggled to stand up, wiped the blood from the corner of her mouth, her eyes full of ruthlessness.

With that, the two men simultaneously attacked the old man. However, in front of the old man, their attacks seemed like child's play. The old man calmly pulled out a bead emitting a soft glow from his sleeve.

As the bead emerged, the world suddenly shifted, and a gentle light enveloped us. To my surprise, the pain in my body had miraculously eased, and even the chaotic energy within me gradually calmed down.

"This is..." I stared at the scene in disbelief, my heart filled with shock. Who was this old man? And what was the treasure in his hand? It actually possessed such miraculous power!

"Hmph, a mere trifle!" A flash of panic crossed Hao Shuang's eyes when he saw his attack was neutralized, but it was quickly replaced by ferocity. He pulled a small, pitch-black bottle from his bosom, uncorked it, and a pungent, fishy odor immediately filled the air.

"Old man, today I'll let you see how powerful I am!"

Hao Shuang smiled grimly and threw the black liquid in the bottle towards the old man...

The black liquid, emitting a sickening stench, traced a strange arc through the air, hurtling straight towards the old man. My heart tightened, and I could almost foresee the old man being splattered with this disgusting liquid. However, the old man didn't even raise his eyelids in the face of the incoming liquid.

The bead, emitting a soft glow, trembled slightly, and an invisible force enveloped the black liquid, suspending it in mid-air. Then, the bead's light shone brightly, and the black liquid melted away like ice and snow, leaving no trace on the ground.

"How is this possible?!" Hao Shuang's eyes widened in disbelief, as if she had seen something incredible. Wei Xue was so shocked that she stepped back repeatedly, her face pale.

"Is that all you've got?" the old man finally spoke. His voice was deep and commanding, like a mighty bell, making people's ears buzz. "It seems I overestimated you."

The old man's words were filled with disdain and disappointment, leaving Hao Shuang and Wei Xue feeling ashamed and angry, but they dared not speak out. They knew in their hearts that the old man before them was unfathomable and beyond their reach.

"Senior, why do you want to interfere in this matter?" Elder Wei stepped forward and asked respectfully.

The old man didn't answer Elder Wei's question. He simply turned his gaze towards me. His deep eyes seemed to see through my soul, making my heart flutter. "Are you Wei Yao?"

"It's me." I calmed myself down and answered respectfully.

"The power in your body is very unusual..." the old man said meaningfully.

I was startled. Could he have seen through my secret? I was about to explain when the old man continued, "This power doesn't belong to this world, yet it's inextricably linked to it. You are the chosen one."

The chosen one? I was completely confused and had no idea what the old man meant by this.

"Senior, you..." I was about to ask, but the old man interrupted me by raising his hand.

"Now is not the time to explain." The old man turned to look at Hao Shuang and the others, a cold light flashing in his eyes, "Leave these people to me."

Without waiting for our reaction, the old man transformed into a stream of light and instantly appeared before Hao Shuang. He stretched out his palm and gently pressed it against Hao Shuang's chest.

"Ah--" Hao Shuang let out a scream, and flew backwards like a kite with a broken string. He fell heavily to the ground, spitting blood from his mouth. It was obvious that he was seriously injured.

Wei Xue was so frightened at the sight that she turned around and tried to run away. However, before she could take a few steps, the old man waved his sleeves and froze her in place, unable to move.

"You..." Wei Xue looked at the old man in horror, her eyes full of fear.

"Don't worry, I won't kill you." The old man said calmly, "Your actions will be punished by heaven."

With that, the old man stopped paying attention to Wei Xue and turned to look at me, Elder Wei, and the others. His expression softened, a hint of relief in his eyes. "You've done well. Leave the rest to me."

As soon as he finished speaking, the bead in the old man's hand glowed softly again. This time, the light was even more dazzling, like a sun rising within me, warm and full of power. I felt the mysterious new power within me rapidly awakening. I stood up, looking at the villains with a fighting look in my eyes, "No, this matter is not over yet..."
