Desert Survival, when I entered a month in advance
Chapter 5 Making a Fire
The sun shone on her face, and the burning sensation pulled her out of her dream.
She had thrown the quilt aside at some point and was lying carelessly in the cave with her feet facing inward. The morning sun just barely shone on her head.
The first thing she did when she woke up was to look outside. The wooden boxes were still intact, and each box was filled with nearly half a box of water.
She walked out and combined the two boxes of water into one to save space. In the end, she packed 11 wooden boxes and placed them all in the cave to avoid direct sunlight and excessive evaporation.
After doing all this and taking a look outside and seeing that there were no new boxes, she felt at ease to go into the cave and start washing her face and rinsing her mouth.
Not long after the sun came out, the water had already heated up to a very high temperature. She took off her clothes, took out the white silk scarf she had opened yesterday, wet it, and wiped her body with it. She was reluctant to wash it directly with water.
Although the lack of shower gel didn't make the wash thorough, I felt much more refreshed.
She simply washed her underwear with water and placed it directly above the cave to dry.
She used up almost a wooden box of water, and took the 13 empty wooden boxes outside to dry in the sun, as damp boxes are prone to rot.
The white silk scarf dried very quickly in the desert. Her underwear was completely dry right after she washed it. She directly wrapped it around her head as a headscarf, which could protect her from the sun and sand, just like the ethnic characteristics of the Middle East.
The first box of the day appeared after Feng Chan finished eating half of the baguette, and she put it back skillfully.
After opening the box, 5 scorpions came out. It was really a jackpot. Feng Chan smashed the scorpions as fast as she could, and then threw them onto the quicksand to mark them.
Soon the underwear was dry. Feng Chan took it back, shook off the sand and put it on again.
There was only one box at noon, and when it was brought back, there was a 500g bag of red fish bait inside.
Now she was truly silent. Was this something he was giving her to fish in the desert? He was kidding.
Despite her complaints, she still put the things away.
I had bad luck today. I only saw three boxes in total. The last box was the one I found in the afternoon. When I opened it, there was a pack of matches with 20 sticks in it.
Overall, Feng Chan was quite satisfied. Although the supplies were few, they were very important. It was too cold at night, and she could only get a good sleep for one or two hours in the early morning when the sun just came out. It was too cold if she went out too early, and too hot if she went out too late.
With matches, you can make a fire at night, and the wood is of course the other 16 empty wooden boxes.
Although she didn't have tools like a knife, she had a sturdy iron block, and she could get some sawdust and wood blocks by smashing it a few times.
The stars are still shining tonight. Feng Chan has smashed three wooden boxes, gathered the tiny wood chips in a pile and dug a hole underneath. She carefully lit a matchstick and quickly placed it in the wood chip hole.
She didn't even dare to breathe deeply, for fear that the fire would go out. However, the flame of the matchstick was too small, and the first attempt failed. She had no choice but to light the second one and barely ignited the wood chips.
Feng Chan blew gently on the smoke, and it became thicker and thicker, and finally it suddenly ignited from the small spark at the beginning.
She happily picked up the smaller piece of wood next to her and placed it on the sawdust, not daring to press it down.
Soon the fire was completely stabilized, and she dared to put in large pieces of wood.
The cold night finally had a touch of warmth.
However, the space here was too small, so Feng Chan filled two boxes of sand in a wooden box and poured them out to surround the fire to prevent herself from accidentally touching it while sleeping.
Now half of the wooden boxes were filled with water. Excluding the three smashed wooden boxes, there were still 10 wooden boxes that she used to seal the hole. She only sealed about half of it, so there was no need to worry about suffocation.
With the fire, the temperature in the cave rose by several degrees. Feng Chan adjusted her sleeping position to a safe place but not too far from the fire. Because there were supplies in the cave, she was leaning over.
She got up several times to add more fuel to the fire and had a good sleep that night.
When she woke up in the morning, Feng Chan saw that the fire in the sand pile had only charcoal left. She buried it with sand. If she was lucky, the charcoal fire would still be burning until the afternoon.
Unfortunately, these burning carbon blocks are relatively small, and it is difficult for them to stay burning for so long. However, even if they are extinguished, it will be easier to start a fire with the carbon blocks in the future.
Now she only has two red bean mooncakes left. Fortunately, each one is 200g, so if she saves them, she can eat one for a whole day.
After tearing open the package of one of the noodles, the faint aroma of oil and beans wafted into her nose. Feng Chan couldn't wait to take a bite and savor it carefully.
"good to eat!"
After giving a serious evaluation, Feng Chan took another bite and put it down. She had to save it for lunch and afternoon.
After drinking two sips of water, Feng Chan started practicing ring tossing.
The boxes appeared very late today. Two of them appeared just as the sun was about to set. One was a light blue wooden box and the other was an ordinary wooden box.
Feng Chan picked up the things and accepted both without any trouble. After opening them, one of them contained a dry bread as big as her face, and the other was an anchor model, only the size of a pen, which looked useless.
Unfortunately, there was no instruction manual inside and it didn't glow, but since the box was colored, the things inside must be good, so she put it together with the light green bead.
She had used up two stones today, and after deducting the ones she had used before, she still had five left. The empty wooden box was very useful to her, but she didn't want to use it to explore unless necessary.
The only food she can eat now is a red bean cake and dry naan, which can last for about three days.
As night fell, the temperature gradually dropped. She dug open the sand pile in the cave and found that the carbon blocks inside had indeed gone out.
Fortunately, there were still three finger-sized pieces of charcoal left. She smashed three empty wooden boxes and used the same method to light the fire again, consuming one match.
There are 17 matches remaining.
She simply washed her body and face with the water in the wooden box and fell into a deep sleep.
Seventh day.
After a quick wash with the water in the wooden box yesterday, she washed her underwear and hung it outside to dry. She sweated so much that she used a whole box of water in total.
After breakfast, Feng Chan practiced the ring-tossing technique as usual.
Apart from the sound of the wind, she could only hear her own breathing in the silence surrounding her.
But the sound of a bell coming from far away ignited her hope. The moment she heard the sound, she wondered if she was hallucinating.
But the sound did exist, coming from behind the slope above the cave.
She had been to the top of the cave before, and it was safe right above it. She ran up as fast as she could and saw a camel caravan about four or five hundred meters away.
Feng Chan frantically waved and yelled, "Help! I'm trapped! Help..."
The other party's route was originally in a straight line, but after noticing that there were people here, they came over on camels in surprise.
There were two men and one woman. The woman had completely white hair and looked very old, but she was dressed smartly, had a tall figure, and her eyes were bright.
The two men looked middle-aged, one was short and fat and the other was tall and thin, with a yellowish-brown complexion and beards. They wore the men's turbans of the Ox Country. Because the color was not chosen well, they looked like a pile of poop on their heads.
The two men looked somewhat similar to the woman. Each had a blue gem in the center of their hats, while the woman wore a diamond-shaped ruby between her eyebrows. Her facial features were deep, and paired with her platinum sari-like dress, she looked bright and eye-catching.
