The Second World in Ancient Times
Chapter 95: Encountering an ambush and responding calmly
Ambush troops surged from all directions like a tide, surrounding us in an instant. The shouts and cries of killing made my eardrums hurt. But I knew that I had to remain calm at this moment. Panic would only lead us into a desperate situation faster.
"Guards, listen up! Form a circular defensive formation with me as the center, with shield bearers in front and spearmen in the back. Don't panic!" I shouted loudly, with unquestionable majesty in my voice.
The guards, well-trained, quickly followed my orders. The shieldbearers huddled together, their shields raised high, forming a solid metal barrier. The sunlight caught the shields, reflecting a dazzling cold light. The spearmen thrust their spears through the slits in their shields, their spearheads pointed directly at the enemy. Anyone who dared to approach would be met with the cold spear points.
"Your Majesty, there are so many enemies. Can we hold on like this?" a guard asked worriedly.
"Don't be afraid. As long as our formation doesn't get disrupted, they won't be able to break through in a short time." I responded calmly, while quickly thinking about the next response strategy in my mind.
I turned to Afeng beside me and said, "Afeng, take a few people and go light the smoke bombs we prepared in advance and throw them in the direction of the enemy. Try to create as much chaos as possible to buy time for rescue."
"Yes, your majesty!" Afeng took the order and left. He took a few agile guards with him, crouched down, and ran quickly to the place where the smoke bombs were placed.
Soon, several smoke bombs were ignited, hissing and emitting thick smoke. The smoke quickly spread, enveloping us and the enemy. The enemy's shouts of killing suddenly became panicked.
"What kind of sorcery is this?"
"I can't see clearly, be careful, there's a scam!"
The enemy's position began to become chaotic. They groped in the smoke and did not dare to advance rashly.
"Everyone stay calm and don't act rashly!" I reminded the guards loudly again.
At this moment, I saw several dark figures in the smoke quietly approaching our formation. My heart tightened and I shouted loudly, "Enemy approaching from the left front, spearmen, please pay attention!"
The spearmen responded to the noise and thrust their spears fiercely forward to the left. Several screams were heard as the enemies attempting a sneak attack were repelled.
"My queen, the smoke bomb is effective, but it can't last long." Afeng came back to me and said.
"I know, we have to delay time as much as possible. Afeng, go and see if there are any other retreat routes or terrain that can be used." I said anxiously.
"Yes, my queen." Afeng turned and left again.
In the smoke, I engaged in a battle of wits and wits with the enemy. I deliberately shouted, "The king's reinforcements are arriving soon. If you surrender now, you can still avoid death!"
This shout made the enemy even more nervous. They whispered to each other in the smoke, unsure whether to continue the attack.
"Brother, what should we do? If the king's reinforcements really come, we will be finished." said a minion.
"Don't listen to her nonsense, this may be her delaying tactic! Continue the attack!" The leader shouted, but there was a hint of hesitation in his voice.
Just then, Afeng came back. "My Lady, there's a forest behind us. We can retreat there. With the cover of the forest, we might be able to hold out a little longer."
"Okay, then let's retreat slowly and make sure to maintain our formation." I made the decision decisively.
"Guards, listen up! Retreat and maintain formation!" I shouted.
The guards began to slowly move backwards, each step cautiously, shields still tightly guarded. The enemy noticed our retreat and wanted to take advantage of the opportunity to rush forward.
"It's not that easy to rush over! Spearmen, stab!" I commanded the spearmen to block the approaching enemies.
We fought and retreated until we finally reached the edge of the woods, where the tall, dense trees provided some cover.
"Everyone spread out, use the trees as barriers, and continue defending!" I gave new instructions.
The guards quickly dispersed, each seeking a suitable position. I hid behind a large tree, my eyes fixed on the enemy outside.
"Your Majesty, this is not a solution. After all, our numbers are limited." A guard said helplessly.
"I know. We are waiting for the rescue of the king and the ministers. They will definitely come." I said firmly. Although I was a little nervous, I knew that I could not show any hesitation at this moment. I had to give the guards confidence.
Just then, I heard the sound of horse hooves and shouts of killing in the distance. I was delighted: "Reinforcements are coming! Everyone, get ready, cooperate with the reinforcements, and fight back against the enemy!"
When the guards heard the news, they immediately became excited, gripped their weapons tightly, and prepared for the upcoming battle.
