Spy war in the Republic of China, peak undercover
Chapter 747 Are you sure it’s this direction?
Lu Yang was delighted. It worked! He quickly followed the staff officer into the command tent.
The tent was dimly lit and filled with smoke.
Colonel Yamashita was sitting at a map table, scribbling on the map with a pencil in his hand, muttering something non-stop. He looked to be in his forties, not tall, but his eyes were sinister, revealing a fierceness.
"Colonel, the person has been brought here." The staff officer said respectfully.
Shan Xia raised his head and his eyes fell on Lu Yang, like two knives, wanting to scrape him from inside to outside. "Are you the one who ran back?"
"Hi!" Lu Yang saluted again, his voice trembling. "Report to His Excellency the Colonel! Our team was ambushed by the Chinese army in the valley ahead... We suffered heavy losses... Only I... Only I managed to escape..."
"Waste!" Yamashita snorted coldly, full of disdain. "If you can't even deal with a few Chinese, what's the point of the empire supporting you?"
"Colonel, calm down!" Lu Yang quickly lowered his head, pretending to be terrified. "The Chinese army's firepower is very strong... They... They seem to have heavy weapons..."
"Heavy weapons?" Yamashita frowned. "What kind of heavy weapons?"
"Like... like mortars... and... and machine guns..." Lu Yang deliberately spoke vaguely.
"Hmm?" Yamashita's face became serious. "The Chinese army has heavy weapons deployed in that direction? This is strange..." He walked to the map and looked at it carefully.
Lu Yang knew his chance had arrived. He casually approached the map table, "recalling" the battle as he pointed to a location on the map. "Colonel, they... they seem to be coming from this direction... Yes, right here..."
The location of his finger was exactly the wrong direction away from Wild Wolf Valley marked on the false intelligence.
Shanxia looked in the direction of Lu Yang's finger, his brows furrowed, as if he was thinking about something.
Lu Yang's heart was in his throat, success or failure depended on this one move.
Suddenly, Shan Xia raised his head and stared at Lu Yang sharply: "Are you sure it's this direction?"
"I'm sure..." Lu Yang felt uneasy under the gaze from the mountain, but he still said bravely, "I... I saw it clearly at that time..."
Shanxia didn't say anything, but just stared at Lu Yang, his eyes full of suspicion.
The atmosphere in the tent suddenly became tense, as if the air had frozen.
Lu Yang felt his back was soaked with cold sweat. He forced himself to remain calm and looked at the man below the mountain, his eyes full of "fear" and "sincerity".
At this critical moment, a burst of hurried footsteps suddenly came from outside the tent.
"Report!" A messenger rushed in, panting, "Colonel! Urgent news from the front! The Chinese army... the Chinese army has launched a fierce attack in Wild Wolf Valley!"
"What?!" Yamashita's face changed drastically. He turned around abruptly and grabbed the messenger's collar. "What did you say? Wild Wolf Valley?!"
"Hey! There's a lot of gunfire coming from the direction of Wild Wolf Valley... Our vanguard... seems... seems to have fallen into an ambush..." the messenger said in horror.
"Baga!" Shan Xia roared angrily. He finally realized that he had been tricked! He turned around and looked at Lu Yang with murderous intent in his eyes.
However, Lu Yang had already taken advantage of the chaos to retreat to the door of the tent.
"Colonel Yamashita, goodbye!" Lu Yang sneered, then suddenly pulled open the tent curtain and rushed out.
"Catch him! Don't let him run away!" Yamashita roared angrily.
The guards outside heard the noise and immediately raised their guns to shoot at Lu Yang.
Lu Yang was prepared. He rolled over to avoid the bullet, then took out two grenades from his arms, pulled the safety pin, and threw them towards the tent.
"Boom!"
With two loud bangs, the command tent collapsed instantly, flames shot up into the sky, and thick smoke billowed.
Colonel Yamashita and the staff officer, along with the maps and documents in the tent, were all buried under the rubble.
Lu Yang did not stop. He took advantage of the chaos to rush out of the Japanese camp and disappeared into the night.
He knew that he had succeeded.
He successfully disrupted the Japanese army's deployment and bought valuable time for Lao Hei and his men in Wild Wolf Valley.
He believed that Lao Hei and his men would be able to defend the Wild Wolf Valley and deal a heavy blow to the Japanese!
He ran all the way back to the cave where he and the monkey had hidden before.
When Monkey saw Lu Yang coming back, he quickly came up to him and asked, "Brother Lu, are you okay?"
"It's okay," Lu Yang waved his hand, then asked, "How's Lao Hei doing?"
"The gunfire has not stopped," said the monkey. "It sounds quite loud. I guess the fighting is quite intense."
Lu Yang nodded, walked to the cave entrance and looked towards the Wild Wolf Valley.
There was flames rising into the sky, and the sounds of gunfire and explosions were deafening.
He knew that Lao Hei and his men were fighting a desperate battle with the Japanese army.
"Lao Hei, brothers, you must hold on!" Lu Yang prayed silently in his heart.
He knew that the only thing he could do now was to wait, wait for the end of the battle and the arrival of dawn.
He leaned against the rock wall, closed his eyes, and began to rest. He had to recover his strength as soon as possible because he knew that this battle was far from over.
The sky finally gradually brightened.
The gunshots in Wild Wolf Valley gradually became sparse, and finally disappeared completely.
Lu Yang suddenly opened his eyes, stood up and walked towards the Wild Wolf Valley.
The monkey followed.
When the two arrived at the Wild Wolf Valley, they saw that it was in a mess, with corpses of Japanese soldiers and the wreckage of burned vehicles everywhere.
The air was filled with smoke and blood flowed like a river, the scene was horrific.
"Lao Hei! Lao Hei!" Lu Yang shouted loudly.
"Hey! Boss! We are here!" Lao Hei's voice came from not far away, with a hint of fatigue and excitement.
Lu Yang looked in the direction of the sound and saw Lao Hei and a group of guerrillas sitting on a big rock to rest. Their bodies were covered in blood and smoke, but their faces were filled with the joy of victory.
"Boss, you're here!" When Lao Hei saw Lu Yang, he quickly stood up and went to greet him.
"How is it? Are there heavy casualties?" Lu Yang asked.
"Not bad," Lao Hei said, "We lost more than a dozen men and injured more than twenty. However, we defeated the Japanese. At least three hundred people were killed or wounded, and all the armored vehicles were destroyed!"
"Well done!" Lu Yang patted Lao Hei's shoulder and praised, "You are all great!"
"Hehe," Lao Hei smiled innocently, "This is all thanks to you, Boss. If you hadn't killed that old devil down the mountain, they wouldn't have been in such a mess, and it wouldn't have been so easy for us to succeed."
"Okay, let's stop talking about this," Lu Yang said, "Hurry up and clean up the battlefield, treat the wounded, and then we have to leave here as soon as possible."
"Leave here? Where to?" asked Lao Hei.
"Let's go back to the mountain city." Lu Yang said, "We are still needed over at Eagle's Beak Cliff."
"Okay!" Lao Hei agreed, then turned around and began to direct the team members to clean up the battlefield.
Lu Yang stood in the middle of the valley, looking at the sacrificed soldiers, his heart filled with grief.
He knew that they had paid too much for this victory.
But he also knew that their sacrifice was worth it.
Because they used their lives to defend this land and the dignity of the nation!
"Lao Wang, brothers, rest in peace," Lu Yang murmured to himself, "We will walk the rest of the way for you!"
At dawn, the air of Wolf Valley was thick with the pungent smell of blood and gunpowder. The soil, torn apart by artillery fire, revealed a dark red, moist surface, like a gaping wound in the earth. The guerrillas silently cleaned up the mess, carefully burying the bodies of their fallen comrades. The fatigue on their faces couldn't mask the sadness in their eyes.
Lu Yang leaned against a blackened rock as Qing Lan carefully tended to the wound on his left shoulder. The sharp pain from the strong liquor poured over him made him groan, and veins popped on his forehead. Blood mixed with the medicine powder flowed down, staining the newly replaced cloth red.
"Be gentle." His voice was hoarse, with a hint of imperceptible fatigue.
Qinglan said nothing, but her movements became gentler. Her eyes were complex, filled with worry, and something else that Lu Yang couldn't understand, nor did he want to understand.
Lao Hei walked over, his face covered in dust, a canteen in his hand. "Boss, we've almost finished packing. We've counted the captured weapons and ammunition, and those two Iron Turtle Bass are ready to go. Are we...really going back to the mountain city?"
"Go back." Lu Yang took the canteen and took a few gulps. The cool liquid slid down his throat, slightly dulling the burning pain from his wound. "We can't leave Eagle's Beak Cliff unattended. The Japanese have suffered such a heavy loss, their next move will surely be even bigger. We need to go back and make preparations in advance."
Monkey, who was cleaning a Type 38 rifle, interrupted, "What about that little Japanese soldier we captured? He's quite stubborn and won't say anything."
Lu Yang glanced at the Japanese prisoner, bound and thrown in a corner, his mouth stuffed with rags. The fellow's eyes were fierce, like a wounded wolf cub. "Take it with you. It might be useful on the road." He paused. "Burn that sergeant's uniform. It's bad luck."
The team rested for a moment before preparing for evacuation. The wounded were prioritized and placed in the one armored vehicle that was still functioning, while the other was loaded with captured ammunition and supplies. The engine roared hoarsely, like a consumptive cough, and the vehicle swayed, ready to fall apart at any moment.
Lu Yang insisted on walking in front of the team, even though Lao Hei and Qing Lan both advised him to get in the car to recuperate.
"The road is bumpy, and the car is shaking even more." He waved his hand, tightening his grip on the "Qinglong" in his right hand, and glanced across the gray mountains. "Everyone, cheer up. The Japanese won't let us leave easily."
The team slowly advanced along the rugged mountain path, choosing routes sheltered by dense forests whenever possible. The morning mist, still lingering, provided them with a natural layer of cover. But everyone knew danger was always around the corner.
Less than half a day after walking, the monkey responsible for reconnaissance in front turned back quietly like a civet cat.
"Brother Lu, there's a Japanese checkpoint at the intersection ahead!" He lowered his voice, his face filled with anxiety. "It looks like it was just set up. There are a few motorcycles, a Type 99 rifle, and a dozen or so Japanese soldiers."
Lao Hei frowned and said, "Damn, they're really fast! It looks like they're coming for us."
Lu Yang paused and surveyed the surrounding terrain. This was a narrow valley passage, flanked by steep cliffs, making it nearly impossible to circumvent it. A headlong charge would inevitably result in a fierce battle and expose their whereabouts.
"We can't confront them head-on." Lu Yang said in a deep voice, "Monkey, is there a small path nearby that we can use to bypass it?"
The monkey shook his head and said, "There are only cliffs here, unless we can grow wings and fly over."
Lu Yang's eyes fell on the armored vehicle loaded with ammunition, and then he looked at the tied up prisoners, and an idea flashed through his mind.
"Old Black, get that guy over here."
The prisoner was dragged in front of Lu Yang and continued to stare at him.
Lu Yang squatted down and pulled the rag out of the prisoner's mouth. "Do you understand Chinese?"
The prisoner spat bloody saliva and turned his head away.
"Alright, you have guts." Lu Yang sneered, pulled out a dagger from his waist, and waved it in front of the captive. "I don't have time to waste with you. There's a checkpoint ahead. If you want to survive, cooperate with us. Otherwise, I'll send you on your way to the underworld. Those brothers who just died are waiting for you."
The prisoner's body stiffened noticeably, his eyes flickering, clearly struggling internally. The threat of death was more effective than anything else.
"What...what do you want?" The prisoner finally spoke, his voice hoarse and dry.
"It's very simple." Lu Yang tapped his face with the tip of the knife. "Wait a minute, ask your people to let us pass."
"No... Impossible!" The captive immediately shook his head. "They won't listen to me..."
"Then make them believe you." Lu Yang stood up and winked at Lao Hei, "Strip his clothes and replace them with our people."
Soon, a guerrilla fighter of similar build to the captives changed into the dirty Japanese military uniform. Lu Yang also had someone smear some blood and dirt on the fighter's face, making him look like he had just been through a fierce battle.
"You," Lu Yang pointed at the pretend "prisoner," "come with us later and tell them that we're holding you hostage. Otherwise, we'll kill you."
He turned to the real prisoner and said, "You, stay in the car. If you dare to move or make any noise, I will kill you first."
The prisoner's face turned pale and he nodded repeatedly.
The plan was complete. The armored vehicle slowly drove toward the checkpoint, with Lu Yang and several other team members following behind, pretending to escort prisoners. The others hid in the woods a little further away, ready to respond at any moment.
As they approached the checkpoint, the Japanese sentries immediately became alert and pointed the black muzzles of their Type 99 light machine guns at them.
"Command!" A Japanese sergeant walked forward with a gun and shouted sternly.
The team member pretending to be a prisoner struggled in time and shouted in Japanese: "Help! Help! I am from the Yamaguchi team! They are Chinese guerrillas! Save me!"
Lu Yang slammed the team member's back with the butt of his gun and yelled in broken Japanese, "Shut up! I'll kill you if you yell again!"
He stepped forward and shouted to the Japanese sergeant: "Here, we are the anti-Japanese guerrillas! This man is your soldier. If you know what's good for you, get out of the way. Otherwise, I will kill him right now!"
The Japanese sergeant was obviously confused by this sudden situation. He looked at his own people who were being "hostage", and then at the guns in Lu Yang and the others' hands, and hesitated for a moment.
"Baga! What do you want to do?" the sergeant shouted in a timid tone.
