Chapter 722 When Do We Take Action?
Lu Yang looked at the map in his hand. The red dots looked like bloodstains, making his eyelids twitch.
He took a deep breath and ran his fingertips over the sign for "Warehouse 3".
"Tonight's shipment must be destroyed," he whispered.
Qinglan came closer and glanced at the time bomb. "Can this thing really blow up the warehouse?"
"Yes." Lu Yang nodded. "This is what I brought from 2025. It's powerful enough."
Xiao He's eyes widened. "2025? Brother Lu, who the hell are you?"
"Don't ask." Lu Yang interrupted coldly. "Knowing too much won't do you any good."
Xiao Jiang clenched his knife tightly and whispered, "When do we start?"
"After dark." Lu Yang put away the map. "Strike when the Japanese patrols slacken."
As night falls, the warehouses in the south of Nanjing are shrouded in darkness.
In the distance came the sound of Japanese soldiers' boots stamping on the ground, regular but harsh.
Lu Yang and a few others sneaked to a hundred meters away from the warehouse and hid behind a pile of broken bricks.
He set up his sniper rifle and scanned the sentry at the door.
Two Japanese soldiers were smoking against the wall, their faces red with the firelight.
"Qinglan, take Xiaohe around to the back door." Lu Yang whispered.
"Lao Liu, guard the flank, and Xiao Jiang, follow me in the front." He paused.
"Remember, don't fight too long, retreat after installing the bomb." His eyes darkened.
Qinglan nodded, bent down with Xiaohe and disappeared into the night.
Lu Yang lowered the brim of his hat, changed into a Japanese military uniform, and strode towards the warehouse.
"Sir!" The soldier at the door saluted hurriedly when he saw him coming.
"The Major has ordered to check the cargo." Lu Yang shouted in fluent Japanese.
The soldier didn't suspect anything and let him in.
In the warehouse, wooden boxes were piled up like small mountains, and glass bottles of green liquid were faintly visible.
Lu Yang's heart beat faster and he took out a time bomb from his arms.
He squatted down, stuffed the bomb into the gap of the box, and set a five-minute countdown.
The red light flashed, like a silent warning.
Suddenly, footsteps were heard from deep within the warehouse, hurried and chaotic.
Lu Yang turned around suddenly and saw a man in a black suit walking out.
The man was wearing a round hat, had a scar on his face, and had a sinister look in his eyes.
"Who are you?" Scarface asked in Japanese, his hand already reaching for his waist.
Lu Yang sneered and pulled out his pistol. "I'll send you off."
The gunshot rang out, muffled by the silencer, and Scarface's eyebrows exploded.
The body fell and blood stained the ground.
Lu Yang shouted, "Xiao Jiang, retreat!"
Xiao Jiang rushed over, his face pale. "There's movement outside!"
Lu Yang looked out and saw more than a dozen dark shadows outside the warehouse.
They were all men in plain clothes, holding guns and shouting.
"Oh no, they're the lackeys of the Wang Puppet Regime." Lu Yang gritted his teeth.
He grabbed the bomb and adjusted the time, three minutes, no more delay.
"Run!" he growled, and rushed towards the side door with Xiao Jiang.
Gunshots exploded behind him, and bullets flew past the wall.
Lao Liu rushed out from the side and stabbed down a pursuer with a dagger.
Qinglan and Xiaohe also rushed out from the back door and reunited with each other, panting.
"Is the bomb installed?" Qinglan asked in a tense voice.
"Pretend." Lu Yang nodded. "Two minutes left."
Several people ran a hundred meters and heard a loud noise behind them.
Boom! The warehouse exploded into a fireball, debris scattering everywhere, and the night sky was illuminated blood red.
The glass bottle shattered in the explosion and the green liquid evaporated in the flames.
Lu Yang stopped and turned to look at the sea of fire.
"The fire is out." He whispered, but his eyes did not relax.
In the distance, sirens sounded in Nanjing City, alarming the Japanese army.
"Let's go!" Lu Yang waved. "Back to the safe house."
In the dark night, the figures of several people gradually moved away, and the wind blew away the smell of gunpowder.
When we returned to the safe house in Suzhou, it was just dawn.
Lu Yang took out the "Sakura" pen and adjusted the frequency to send a message.
"Ding... ding... ding..." The sound of the telegraph echoed in the house.
"The fire in Nanjing has been destroyed. Please provide further instructions." He whispered.
The signal was given, and he leaned against the wall, closed his eyes and waited.
There were light knocks on the door, three long and two short.
Lu Yang opened his eyes suddenly and clenched his gun. "Who?"
"It's me." A female voice sounded, low and familiar.
The door opened and a woman in a gray cheongsam walked in.
She took off her hat, revealing a pretty face with a teardrop mole at the corner of her eye.
"Sakura?" Lu Yang was stunned, but he didn't put down the gun.
"It's me." The woman nodded. "Lu Yang, you did a good job."
"Why are you here?" Lu Yang narrowed his eyes, his vigilance still undiminished.
"Because 'Zero' isn't dead yet." Sakura whispered.
"Next stop, Shanghai." She paused. "He's waiting for you."
Lu Yang was silent and tapped his pen with his fingers.
"Okay." He said coldly. "Then go meet him."
Lu Yang was silent and tapped his pen with his fingers.
The pen's micro-transmitter was still humming, like a whisper.
He looked up at Sakura, his eyes as cold as a knife.
"You said 'Zero' is in Shanghai?" he asked in a low voice.
Sakura nodded and walked over to the table and sat down.
"Yes," she whispered. "He has a base in the French Concession."
Lu Yang narrowed his eyes and stopped tapping his fingers.
"Where is the base?" His tone was calm but oppressive.
Sakura pulled a folded piece of paper from her sleeve.
She unfolded the note and handed it over.
"Xiafei Road, Western District of the French Concession." She whispered.
"A dance hall called the Moulin Rouge," she added.
Lu Yang took the note and glanced at it.
The note had the address scribbled on it and a red circle around it.
"Dance hall?" he sneered. "It's hidden quite nicely."
"It's not hiding." Sakura shook her head. "It's an open cover."
"'Zero' likes to be lively." She paused.
"He uses the dance hall as a trading point." Her eyes darkened.
Lu Yang put the note away and leaned against the wall to light a cigarette.
The firelight reflected his cold face, and the smoke was swirling.
"What's the deal?" He exhaled a puff of cigarette.
"The next batch of samples of the Spark." Sakura whispered.
"And..." She hesitated.
"Anything else?" Lu Yang asked in a heavier tone.
"A list," Sakura said finally.
"List?" Lu Yang frowned.
"A list of contacts between the Wang Puppet regime's top brass and the Japanese army." She nodded.
Lu Yang was silent, his mind racing.
In Shanghai in 1938, the French Concession was an isolated island of chaos.
The British and French controlled the country, the Japanese army infiltrated, and the Wang Puppet regime was rampant.
A list is enough to stir up a bloody storm.
"What does 'Zero' want to do?" he whispered to himself.
"He wants to win through chaos," Sakura replied.
"Use Fire to create panic, and then use the list to control the situation," she explained.
Lu Yang snorted coldly and put out his cigarette.
"Then let's take action first." He stood up.
"Go to Shanghai." He looked at Qinglan and others.
Qinglan nodded and stood up to pack his equipment.
Xiaohe and Xiaojiang looked at each other and clenched their weapons.
"Brother Lu, what are you doing this time?" Xiaohe asked.
"Blow up his nest." Lu Yang said coldly.
"By the way, find out 'Zero'." He added.
Lao Liu came over, carrying an iron box.
"The guys are here." He patted the box.
Lu Yang opened it and saw that there were explosives and pistols.
And the sniper rifle parts he brought from 2025.
He assembled the gun skillfully, and the barrel flashed with a cold light.
"Let's go." He said in a low voice and pushed the door open.
The sky gradually darkened and the wind howled along the Suzhou River.
The black car was on the road again, its engine roaring harshly.
No one spoke in the carriage, only silent murderous aura.
Lu Yang leaned against the car window, stroking the gun handle with his fingers.
The map of Shanghai in later generations appeared in his mind.
Xiafei Road, later Huaihai Road, a prosperous area.
The transaction was covered in a dance hall, a typical spy tactic.
He closed his eyes and recalled the clues of "Zero".
Wu Dashan said that "zero" is to build a new world.
Sakura said that "Zero" must win in the chaos.
Who is this guy?
It was late at night when the train arrived in Shanghai.
The neon lights of the French Concession are dazzling and the noise is still there.
The rickshaw drivers shouted on the street and the dancers' laughter floated in the air.
Lu Yang led the team out of the car and changed into casual clothes.
He put on his top hat and whispered to Sakura.
"You lead the way." His eyes darkened.
Sakura nodded and led the others into the alley.
At the end of the alley, the Moulin Rouge sign flickers.
Two men in suits stood at the door, their hands in their pockets.
Lu Yang narrowed his eyes and recognized that it was Wang Puppet's thugs.
"Qinglan, Laoliu, go around to the side." He whispered the instructions.
"Xiaohe and Xiaojiang, follow me and walk straight ahead." He paused.
"Sakura, you guard the rear." He looked at her.
Sakura nodded and disappeared into the darkness.
Lu Yang lowered the brim of his hat and strode towards the ballroom.
"Stop!" a thug shouted.
"What are you doing?" The other one pulled out a pistol.
Lu Yang sneered and spoke in Shanghainese.
"Looking for someone." He said in a relaxed tone.
"Who are you looking for?" The thug frowned.
"Your boss." Lu Yang's hand had already reached for his waist.
The thug was stunned for a moment and was about to speak.
Lu Yang attacked, and the dagger slashed across the throat.
Blood spurted out and the body fell silently.
Another thug just raised his gun when Xiao Jiang knocked him down.
The dagger stabbed into his chest and he groaned.
"Let's go!" Lu Yang said in a low voice and pushed the door open.
The lights in the dance hall were dim and the music was soft.
Men and women swayed closely on the dance floor, and their laughter was shrill.
Lu Yang glanced around and locked onto the box on the second floor.
The lights there were dim and there were vague figures.
He led Xiaohe and Xiaojiang up the wall.
The stairs creaked and the air was tense.
At the end of the corridor on the second floor, the box door was half open.
Lu Yang put his ear to the door and heard a low conversation.
"The sample will be delivered tonight." said a male voice.
"Where's the list?" another voice asked coldly.
"In the safe." The man replied.
Lu Yang's heart beat faster and he pushed the door open.
In the box, three men turned around suddenly.
A Japanese man in a kimono holding a samurai sword.
A fat man in a suit, his face covered in oil and sweat.
There was also a tall and thin man wearing a monocle.
"Who are you?" the fat man shouted.
Lu Yang didn't answer, but took out his gun and fired three shots.
The silencer muffled the gunshots, and three men fell.
The carpet was stained with blood and the box fell silent in an instant.
Xiaohe rushed over and searched the safe.
"Brother Lu, we found it!" he shouted.
