Chapter 557: Ambush on the mountain road
Ambush on the Mountain Road
As soon as the sky was getting light, Lu Yang heard sporadic gunshots coming from a distance.
"Something's wrong," he said, squatting in the bushes beside the road. "There shouldn't be any of our people in this direction."
The gunshots became more and more frequent, mixed with shouts in Japanese.
Lu Yang raised his telescope and saw a guerrilla force exchanging fire with the Japanese army.
"Damn it," he gritted his teeth, "They are from the Eighth Route Army. How come they are here?"
While he was hesitating, a young Eighth Route Army soldier staggered over with blood on his shoulders.
"Comrade!" The soldier saw Lu Yang and a glimmer of hope flashed in his eyes. "Run! There's an ambush ahead!"
Before he could finish his words, a bullet hit him in the back.
Lu Yang grabbed him and hid in the bushes: "Don't move, let me see the wound."
"It's too late," the soldier grabbed Lu Yang's hand, "The documents... the documents need to be sent to headquarters..."
Lu Yang took the package from his arms: "I'll deliver it for you, you wait here..."
The soldier shook his head, his eyes gradually dimming: "Remember... when you pass by... Yangjialing... look for Old Yang..."
Lu Yang checked his breath and found that he was dead.
"Baga! Search! They must be nearby!" The Japanese soldiers' shouts were getting closer and closer.
Lu Yang quickly searched the soldier's belongings and found a copper whistle.
"This is the contact signal," he memorized silently in his mind, "Lao Yang... Yangjialing..."
As the footsteps approached, Lu Yang had to leave the bushes and run along the mountain road.
"There!" A shout came from behind, and bullets whizzed past.
Lu Yang fought back while running and emptied his last magazine.
There was a sudden fork in the mountain road ahead, and the left side was the direction of Yangjialing.
"We can't go to Yangjialing," Lu Yang gritted his teeth and turned to the right, "We have to lead them away."
The mountain road became narrower and narrower, with steep cliffs on both sides.
"There's no way out!" the pursuer said triumphantly, "Surrender!"
Lu Yang looked at the documents in his arms, then looked at the river below the cliff.
"Don't even think about it!" he yelled and jumped off the cliff.
The icy river water instantly swallowed him up, and the rapid current swept him downstream.
"Baga!" The Japanese soldiers on the cliff rushed to the edge and said, "Jump down!"
"Chase! Chase along the river!" the officer ordered.
Lu Yang held his breath underwater and swam to the other side with the help of the current.
His lungs were about to explode, but he didn't dare to raise his head to breathe.
Finally, at a bend, he grabbed hold of a tree root on the shore.
"Cough...cough cough..." Lu Yang lay on the shore, gasping for breath.
Hearing the shouts of pursuers in the distance, he quickly crawled into the reeds on the shore.
It was completely bright, and the sunlight shone on the river, flashing a dazzling light.
Lu Yang touched the documents in his arms. Fortunately, they were wrapped in oilcloth and were not wet.
"I have to find a way to get to Yangjialing," he said to himself, "but this military uniform..."
Just when I was worrying, I heard a sound of water splashing by the river.
An old fisherman was collecting his nets, and a few worn clothes were hanging on the boat.
Lu Yang's eyes lit up, he took out the copper whistle and blew it gently.
The old fisherman was obviously stunned for a moment, then he pulled the boat ashore as if nothing had happened.
"Father-in-law," Lu Yang said tentatively, "I want to go to Yangjialing..."
The old fisherman said without even looking up: "Change your clothes. There is a towel behind you."
【Ferry Terror】
The old fisherman's boat slowly rowed towards the other side, and Lu Yang changed into a set of worn fisherman's clothes.
"Yangjialing is just ahead," the old fisherman pointed to the hillside in the distance, "but..."
Before he could finish his words, the roar of an engine suddenly came from upstream.
"It's a Japanese patrol boat!" The old fisherman's face turned pale. "Get down quickly!"
Lu Yang quickly got into the cabin and curled up under the fishing net. The smelly fish gills rubbed against his face, but he endured the discomfort.
The patrol boat roared closer, its searchlight sweeping over the small fishing boat.
"Hey! Old man!" the officer on the boat shouted in stiff Chinese, "Did you see anyone suspicious?"
The old fisherman pretended not to understand and continued casting his net: "Ah? What did the official say? I'm hard of hearing..."
"Baka!" the officer spat. "Search!"
Two soldiers jumped onto the fishing boat and began searching. Lu Yang's hand rested on the pistol at his waist, cold sweat streaming down his cheeks.
A soldier poked the fishing net with the butt of his rifle, and Lu Yang held his breath.
"Ugh!" the soldier retched at the fishy smell. "It stinks!"
"Go!" the officer waved his hand impatiently. "Who could possibly be hiding on this wreck?"
The patrol boat sailed away, and the waves it stirred up almost overturned the small fishing boat.
"We have to hurry up," the old fisherman wiped the sweat from his forehead, "they will come back."
Just then, a rustling sound came from the reeds on the shore.
"Don't move!" a low voice came. "Come closer slowly."
Lu Yang poked his head out from under the fishing net and saw more than a dozen gun barrels pointed at the fishing boat.
"Lao Yang?" He blew the whistle tentatively.
There was a commotion in the reeds, and an old man came out. "Are you...Yoko?"
"Uncle!" Lu Yang jumped ashore in surprise, "It's really you!"
Lao Yang patted his shoulder, his eyes reddening a little: "Smelly boy, where have you been all these years?"
As he was speaking, the sound of an engine came from upstream again.
"Hurry into the mountains!" Lao Yang pushed Lu Yang, "The Japanese are coming again!"
As soon as everyone hid in the reeds, the patrol boat roared towards them.
"Report!" A soldier pointed to the shore, "The fishing boat is gone!"
The officer raised his binoculars: "Search separately! Someone must have contacted the spy!"
Several patrol boats cruised back and forth on the river, their searchlights sweeping across the reeds.
Lu Yang, Lao Yang and others lay in the mud and water, not daring to move.
"Uncle," Lu Yang whispered, "I have important documents..."
Lao Yang interrupted him: "Let's not talk about this for now, we have to find a way to leave here."
"But this side of the river is full of Japanese checkpoints," said a guerrilla fighter, "We can't get through."
Lao Yang touched his chin: "Unless..."
"Unless what?" Lu Yang asked.
"Unless you go under the water," Old Yang pointed to a string of wooden stakes in the river. "They used to transport logs."
Lu Yang's eyes lit up: "Is there a rope under the water?"
Lao Yang nodded: "But you have to hold your breath for at least two minutes."
"I'll try," Lu Yang took off his coat, "and I'll bring the documents to you."
"No!" Lao Yang stopped him, "It's too dangerous!"
Lu Yang smiled and said, "Don't worry, I learned diving in Hong Kong."
After saying that, he took a deep breath and slowly dived into the water.
The cold river water wrapped around him, and Lu Yang groped to find the rope under the water.
He grabbed the rope with both hands and moved forward little by little in the moonlight.
The air in my lungs was getting less and less, and my vision began to go dark.
Just when he was about to give up, he finally touched the wooden stakes on the other side.
"Huh!" Lu Yang emerged from the water, gasping for breath.
The sentry on the shore actually fell asleep and snored loudly.
Lu Yang climbed ashore quietly and knocked the sentry unconscious from behind.
He grabbed the sentry's gun and fired a shot into the air.
This was the signal agreed upon with Lao Yang, telling them that the road was safe.
【Night Road Tracking】
As soon as Lu Yang, Lao Yang and others walked out of the river bank, they heard dogs barking in the distance.
"Military dogs!" Lao Yang's face changed. "The Japanese are tracking us!"
Lu Yang sniffed his clothes and smelled a strong fishy smell: "Can't this smell be covered up?"
"Military dogs come here by smelling blood," Lao Yang pointed at Lu Yang's arm, "You're injured."
Only then did Lu Yang discover that there was a long scratch on his arm, which might have been caused by an underwater wooden stake.
"We have to get rid of them," said a guerrilla, "otherwise Yangjialing will be in danger."
Lao Yang took out a bag of dried chilies and said, "Go separately and scatter these on the road."
The barking of dogs was getting closer and closer, mixed with the shouts of Japanese soldiers.
"You go ahead," Lu Yang took the chili pepper, "I'll lead them away."
"No!" Lao Yang grabbed him, "You are carrying important documents..."
Lu Yang took out the documents from his pocket and said, "So I have to give them to you to take back."
Under the moonlight, Lao Yang looked at his former apprentice, a trace of reluctance flashing in his eyes.
"I remember when I taught you how to shoot a gun," Old Yang said with a wry smile, "you even wet your pants."
Lu Yang blushed: "Uncle, it's already this time and you're still talking about this..."
"Live well," Lao Yang patted his shoulder, "I'll teach you how to shoot when I get back."
Lu Yang nodded, turned and went into the woods.
He deliberately left obvious footprints on the ground and stained some blood on the leaves.
"Woof! Woof woof!" The barking of military dogs came from far away.
Lu Yang quickened his pace, occasionally scattering a handful of chili peppers on the ground.
"Over there!" A Japanese soldier shouted from behind, "Chase!"
Lu Yang moved nimbly among the woods, sometimes climbing over a fallen tree, sometimes jumping over a stream.
The military dog's barking gradually became painful, obviously choked by the chili pepper.
"Baga!" the Japanese officer cursed. "What a damn smell!"
Lu Yang took the opportunity to climb up a big tree and saw the pursuers stumbling and sneezing.
But he couldn't stop yet, he had to lead them further away.
Just then, there was a slight noise from the branches.
Lu Yang held his breath, slowly turned his head, and saw a pair of green eyes.
"Meow..." A mountain cat was squatting not far away, staring at him with a fierce look.
"Don't come over..." Lu Yang whispered, "Let's not interfere with each other..."
The bobcat seemed to be angered by his actions and suddenly pounced on him.
"Ah!" Lu Yang lost his balance and fell from the tree.
"There!" The Japanese discovered his location.
Lu Yang ignored the pain, got up and ran.
The bobcat let out a long howl in the tree, startling the military dogs and making them bark.
"Damn beast!" The officer raised his gun and shot a military dog to death.
Taking advantage of the chaos, Lu Yang sneaked into a bamboo forest.
The bamboo swayed in the wind, making a rustling sound.
He stopped and carefully identified the direction. He had been to this bamboo forest before and remembered that there was a secret cave there.
"Search indiscriminately!" the officer's order echoed through the bamboo forest. "We must catch him!"
Lu Yang groped his way to the entrance of the cave and went in.
The cave was pitch black, but he didn't dare light a fire.
Suddenly, a hand rested on his shoulder.
Lu Yang's whole body stiffened, and his right hand reached for the pistol at his waist.
"It's me." A familiar voice sounded.
"Ye Wanru?" Lu Yang asked in surprise, "Why are you here?"
"I knew you would come here," Ye Wanru said softly, "This is our old place."
[Secret Talk in the Cave]
The air in the cave was damp and cold. Lu Yang and Ye Wanru squatted in the corner, listening to the noise outside.
"You shouldn't have come," Lu Yang frowned, "It's too dangerous."
Ye Wanru took out an oil-paper bag from her bosom: "I brought some dry food and medicine for my wounds."
Lu Yang looked at her busy figure in the moonlight, and a pang of sadness welled up in his heart.
"Your hands are shaking," Ye Wanru said softly, "Let me bandage you."
Lu Yang let her fiddle with the wound on her arm and suddenly asked, "Are Qinglan and the others okay?"
"Everything is fine," Ye Wanru applied the medicine carefully, "Nianjun has been thinking about you all the time."
They heard footsteps outside and they both held their breath.
"Baga! Where are the people?" A Japanese soldier knocked on the bamboo with the butt of his gun.
