[Road to Escape]

In the bushes, Lu Yang endured the severe pain and climbed up. There were several bloody scratches on his back caused by branches.

The secret agency building was already filled with smoke, and the flames had turned half the sky red.

Sirens were heard in the distance, and more and more military vehicles were gathering here.

Lu Yang tore off his bloodstained military uniform, revealing the casual clothes underneath, and blended into the panicked crowd.

"Run! The secret agency is on fire!" People screamed and ran in all directions, no one paid attention to the dusty man.

In a teahouse on the corner, Mouse was waiting anxiously: "Director, you are finally here!"

Lu Yang handed him the document in his arms: "Send it to Hong Kong immediately, without delay."

"But what about you?" Mouse took the document, his eyes full of worry.

Lu Yang touched his chest pocket, where there was a photo of Ye Wanru: "I have one last thing to do."

A shabby rickshaw was parked outside the back door of the teahouse, and the driver was a liaison officer of the Military Control Commission.

"Take me to the train station," Lu Yang got on the car, "We have to take the small road."

Rickshaws traveled through the dark alleys, and occasionally the barking of dogs could be heard.

A light rain began to fall in the night sky of Fengtian, and the raindrops hitting the car hood made a slight sound.

The area around the train station is already full of spies who are checking every passenger one by one.

Lu Yang got off the rickshaw and turned to walk towards a small shop in front of the station.

The shop owner was an old man, wiping the tea sets on the counter. "Would you like some tea?"

"I want a pancake," Lu Yang said in code, "with chili peppers."

The old man's expression changed, and he turned and went into the inner room. After a while, he took out a package and said, "Change into this."

Inside the package was a set of worn work clothes and a pass.

Lu Yang quickly changed his clothes and wiped his face with charcoal ash. He looked like a laborer working in a factory.

"Stop!" a secret agent stopped him. "What are you doing?"

Lu Yang lowered his head and said in a Northeastern accent, "I'm a worker at the Manchurian Railway, working the night shift."

The agent took the pass, looked at it, and waved him through.

There was a freight train parked on the platform, its carriages full of coal.

While no one was paying attention, Lu Yang turned over and climbed onto the last carriage.

The train started slowly, and the wheels made a harsh sound as they rubbed against the rails.

Just then, there was a sudden commotion on the platform.

"Inspector Nagai has been found!" someone shouted. "He's dead in the archives room!"

Lu Yang hid behind the coal pile and watched the spies running around like headless flies.

The train pulled out of the station and accelerated southward.

The night rain gradually got heavier. Lu Yang leaned against the wall of the carriage, letting the rain soak his whole body.

He took out the photo from his arms, and the rain blurred Ye Wanru's smile.

“Hong Kong,” he whispered, “wait for me.”

The train disappeared in the rain, leaving only a series of whistle sounds echoing in the night sky.

【Hong Kong Old Dreams】

In Hong Kong's Victoria Harbour, the sea surface is shimmering in the twilight.

Lu Yang stood at the dock, watching the ships coming and going, holding a yellowed postcard in his hand.

The postcard shows cherry blossoms from Lichun Garden, with a line of small words written on the back: "Remember the cherry blossom rain that year."

This was the first clue Ye Wanru left for him. They met for the first time in Lichun Garden on that afternoon when cherry blossoms were raining.

In the tea room at the dock, Mouse was waiting for him: "Director, the documents have been safely delivered to headquarters."

Lu Yang nodded, his eyes still fixed on the harbor: "Where has she appeared recently?"

"There's a cafe on Queen's Road," Mouse said in a low voice, "but the Japanese spies have their eyes on that place too."

As night falls, the neon lights on Queen's Road light up one after another, and people come and go on the street.

Lu Yang changed into a suit and sat in the corner of the cafe with a cup of cold coffee in front of him.

The two men at the next table seemed to be reading a newspaper, but they were actually observing every guest who came in.

"He's a spy indeed," Lu Yang laughed in his heart, "Nagai's men have all been sent to Hong Kong."

"Tuber Jasmine" was playing on the gramophone in the cafe, and the song was melodious and graceful.

A woman in cheongsam pushed the door open and walked in. Lu Yang's heartbeat suddenly quickened.

That back view, that gait, are exactly the same as she was in my memory.

The woman stopped at the bar and ordered a cup of coffee in Cantonese.

The agents also noticed her, and one of them had quietly pressed the pistol at his waist.

Just then, there was a sudden commotion on the street and a car lost control and crashed into the cafe.

Amid the sound of shattering glass, people screamed and ran away.

Lu Yang rushed forward and grabbed the woman's hand: "Follow me!"

The spies reacted and pulled out their pistols to shoot.

Mouse and his men appeared in time, and gunshots rang out in the cafe.

Lu Yang pulled the woman through the kitchen and into the intricate streets and alleys.

"You're here," the woman suddenly said, but her voice was not Ye Wanru's. "She asked me to wait for you here."

Lu Yang stopped and looked at the woman's face clearly: "You are..."

"I'm her sister," the woman said, pulling out a letter from her bosom. "She asked me to give this to you."

The sound of chasing footsteps was heard in the distance. Lu Yang took the letter and opened it quickly.

There was only one line of words on the letter: "Central Pier, Midnight."

"Where is she?" Lu Yang asked anxiously.

The woman shook her head. “She said everything is in the letter.”

Suddenly, gunshots were heard in the alley, and bullets hit the wall, sending sparks flying.

"Hurry up!" Lu Yang pushed the woman, "I'll stop them."

The woman disappeared deep into the alley. Lu Yang turned around, pulled out his pistol, and aimed at the pursuing spy.

In the darkness of the night, gunshots rang out one after another, and flames illuminated the narrow alleys.

Lu Yang shot and retreated at the same time, and the bullet flew past his clothes.

Turning a corner, Mouse had already prepared the motorcycle: "Director, get on the car!"

The motorcycle sped along the street, and the pursuers behind it were gradually left behind.

Lu Yang looked at his watch and saw that it was still two hours until midnight.

He touched the letter in his arms, but his heart still didn't calm down.

Midnight Reunion

The lights of the Central Pier cast long shadows on the sea, and the night breeze was filled with salty and humid sea air.

Lu Yang stood at the dock, watching his pocket watch tick towards midnight.

A whistle sounded in the distance, and a cargo ship slowly entered the harbor.

"Director," Mouse came out from the shadows, "the agents have blocked off several nearby streets."

Lu Yang nodded, his eyes still fixed on the sea: "You go first, I will handle the rest myself."

The mouse hesitated to speak, and finally turned around and disappeared into the night.

The workers at the dock gradually dispersed, leaving only a few lonely street lights.

The midnight bell rang from a distant church, and the melodious sound echoed in the sea breeze.

A familiar figure walked down from the freighter, his long hair fluttering gently in the sea breeze.

"Lu Yang," Ye Wanru stood there, her voice choked with sobs, "you finally came."

Lu Yang wanted to go forward, but he found a few dark shadows behind him.

"Don't move," Inoue's voice rang out. "What a touching reunion."

The agents emerged from the darkness, their guns pointed at the two men.

"Ms. Ye," Inoue said slowly, "thank you for cooperating with us in this play."

Lu Yang's pupils suddenly contracted: "What do you mean?"

Ye Wanru lowered her head, tears dripping onto the wooden planks of the dock. “I’m sorry they captured my family.”

"So," Inoue smirked, "she had to help us lure you out."

Lu Yang took a deep breath and his fingers unconsciously touched the pistol at his waist.

"Don't be stupid," Inoue raised his pistol, "Do you think you can beat so many people?"

At this moment, a strong light suddenly appeared on the sea, making it impossible for everyone to open their eyes.

"Get down!" Lu Yang shouted and pulled Ye Wanru over.

Intensive gunfire rang out from the freighter, and Rat and his men surrounded the dock.

"Damn it!" Inoue roared and fired back, bullets flying everywhere.

Lu Yang protected Ye Wanru and moved quickly, using the cover to retreat towards the freighter.

"Be careful!" Ye Wanru suddenly pushed Lu Yang away, and a bullet flew past her arm.

Lu Yang turned around and fired two shots, hitting the two spies who were chasing him.

"Get on board!" came the rat's voice from the freighter.

Ye Wanru staggered up the gangway, with Lu Yang covering her from behind.

Inoue fired frantically: "Don't let them get away!"

A bullet hit Lu Yang's shoulder, and blood instantly dyed his clothes red.

"Lu Yang!" Ye Wanru wanted to turn back, but was stopped by the mouse.

"I'm fine," Lu Yang gritted his teeth and climbed onto the freighter, "Start it quickly!"

The freighter's whistle sounded and it slowly sailed away from the dock.

Inoue stood on the dock and watched the freighter disappear into the night.

In the cabin, Ye Wanru was bandaging Lu Yang's wound.

“I’m sorry,” she said, her hands shaking. “I shouldn’t have listened to them.”

Lu Yang held her hand: "It's okay, the important thing is that we can meet again."

The freighter sailed towards the high seas, and a glimmer of dawn appeared on the horizon.

"Where are we going?" Ye Wanru leaned on Lu Yang's shoulder.

【Years of Seclusion】

The cargo ship sailed on the sea for three days and finally docked at a remote fishing village in Fujian.

The village is nestled between the mountains and the sea, with curling smoke from cooking fires and fishing boats dotted across the blue waves.

The mouse found a carriage and took the two of them inland along the mountain road.

"This is my safe house," Mouse pointed to the mountain village in the distance. "The Japanese haven't reached here yet."

The village is surrounded by mountains, and the terraces extend to the top of the mountain like stairs.

A dilapidated ancestral hall was converted into their residence, with blue bricks and black tiles, and a few osmanthus trees planted in front of the door.

"From today on, you are refugees from Jiangnan," Lao Shu handed them two fake ID cards. "Be careful and don't reveal any flaws."

Lu Yang looked at the name on the ID and whispered, "Lin Jiang, Zhou Yu."

As the sun sets, smoke rises from all over the village and the sound of a shepherd boy's flute can be heard in the distance.

Ye Wanru built a small vegetable garden in the yard and planted vegetables and radishes.

Lu Yang's injuries have not yet fully healed, but he can already help villagers repair farm tools.

"Xiao Lin," the village chief said, puffing on his pipe, "you have quite a good skill. Did you learn it in the city?"

Lu Yang smiled but did not answer, just concentrated on repairing the hoe in his hand.

At night, the two sat in the yard, looking at the starry sky.

"I heard the Japanese have reached Nanjing," Ye Wanru said softly, "I wonder how Lao Shu and the others are doing."

Lu Yang held her hand and said, "All we can do is live well."

The days passed one by one, and they slowly integrated into the village life.

Lu Yang followed the villagers to the mountains to hunt, while Ye Wanru learned weaving from the women in the village.

Occasionally, merchants passed by the village and brought news from outside.

"The Japanese are burning, killing, and looting everywhere," said a businessman. "Coastal cities are in turmoil."

The villagers were talking, but Lu Yang and Ye Wanru just listened silently.

Late one night, sporadic gunshots were suddenly heard in the distance.

"Oh no," Lu Yang stood up, "It's a Japanese patrol."

The village chief took the young people to organize the villagers to evacuate, and the elderly and children hid in the cave first.

Lu Yang took out the Type 38 rifle that had been hidden in the cellar for a long time.

"You take the villagers with you," he said to Ye Wanru, "I'll cover your retreat."

Ye Wanru shook her head: "I won't leave, I want to be with you."

On the mountain road, the beams of Japanese soldiers' flashlights flickered in the darkness.

Lu Yang set up his rifle and aimed at the officer walking in front.

A gunshot broke the tranquility of the mountain village.

The Japanese army suddenly became chaotic and fired blindly at the mountain.

Lu Yang kept changing positions and using the familiar terrain to maneuver.

Ye Wanru supported him from behind and delivered ammunition to him.

At dawn, the Japanese army finally retreated, leaving behind several corpses.

The villagers came out of the cave and watched all this in silence.

"Xiao Lin," the village chief sighed, "it seems you are not ordinary people."

Lu Yang and Ye Wanru looked at each other and knew it was time to leave.

Before leaving, the villagers prepared dry food and money for them.

"Let's go to the rear," the village chief said. "It's still peaceful there."

The two men carried simple luggage and walked west along the mountain road.
