Lu Yang successfully passed the assessment and officially became a member of the police station. Although he had his own secret mission in mind, for now, he wanted to settle down first.

He and several new arrivals were assigned to a large house with a long kang (kang bed). Everyone slept together on it, and if one person farted, everyone had to share it.

Lu Yang and a few new recruits formed a small team. The team leader was a burly man named Liu Dayong, a veteran police officer with three or four years of experience and a hot temper.

Others include Li Xiaohu, a young man who is always smiling; and Wang Ergou, an honest middle-aged man who doesn't talk much but is very hardworking.

One night, the wind was biting cold on the Hulan River in Harbin, and Lu Yang and his team were assigned to work at the Hulan River ferry checkpoint.

The puppet soldiers had already huddled in the house to sleep, and only a few of the newcomers were still standing stupidly in the cold wind.

"Damn it! These puppet soldiers are such bastards!" Liu Dayong cursed. "Every time we're freezing outside, they're enjoying themselves inside."

"Captain, let's find a place to rest. It's not a good idea to keep patrolling like this." Li Xiaohu suggested with a helpless look on his face.

"You want to be lazy, kid?" Liu Dayong glared at him, but there was no blame in his tone.

"Captain, I think Xiaohu is right," Lu Yang continued. "If we continue patrolling like this, not only will we suffer, but it will also make things more likely to go wrong. Why don't we find a place to take turns resting and conserve our strength?"

"You two are quite good at talking." Liu Dayong sighed, "Okay, let's find a place to rest and take turns on duty."

Several people found an abandoned house and took turns to rest. Lu Yang and Li Xiaohu took the first shift while the others lit a fire in the house to keep warm.

"Brother Li, what's the point of us patrolling like this?" Li Xiaohu asked in a low voice, with a bit of confusion in his eyes.

"Whether it's useful or not, we have to do it." Lu Yang replied, scanning the surroundings with vigilance. "This is our job. We can't hide from it. We have to live up to this uniform."

"Brother Li is right." Li Xiaohu nodded and continued his patrol.

"Brother Li, judging from your accent, you are also from here?"

"Well, I'm from Wangkui."

"Ah? We're not far from each other. I'm from Lanxi."

Lu Yang was making it up, so just get over it.

"Ah, I left home when I was ten years old and went to the border to beg for food. Later, I was drafted into the army and had to endure hardship for several years. Fortunately, I survived and managed to sneak back."

"Guanli?"

“I haven’t been there.”

Lu Yang rolled up his sleeves and saw a carriage coming from a distance.

There were an old man and a young boy on the car, pulling thatched roofs and some farm tools.

It was obvious that there was something hidden in the grass, otherwise who would cross the river in the middle of the night.

"Boss, we just finished replacing the roof of the county magistrate's father-in-law's aunt's house. We're going home in the middle of the night. Please help us."

Li Xiaohu was young and energetic, and he was very arrogant. He stepped forward and raised his gun.

"Everyone come down and be examined."

When Lu Yang saw that the father and son were martial artists, his eyes were full of brilliance.

He was fine, but if things went wrong, Li Xiaohu would be in trouble.

"Xiao Hu, didn't they say they were working for the county magistrate's relative? Stop bragging and let him go."

"Oh, let's go."

“Thank you, Boss!”

The two men walked around them with nods and bows.

Lu Yang saw that both of their midfielders had handles, and he thought his analysis was correct.

The less trouble, the better.

As the night deepened, the cold wind became more biting. Lu Yang and Li Xiaohu swapped shifts, and it was Liu Dayong and Wang Ergou's turn to take over.

"You two should have a good rest, we will handle it." Liu Dayong patted Lu Yang's shoulder and walked out of the house.

Lu Yang lay on the haystack with his eyes closed, but his ears were always perked up, alert to any movement around him.

Not long after he fell asleep, he suddenly heard a shout from a distance. Lu Yang sat up suddenly and saw flames rising into the sky outside.

"Something's happened!" Liu Dayong rushed into the house and shouted, "The Anti-Japanese United Army is coming!"

Several people immediately stood up and rushed out of the house, seeing blazing flames and billowing smoke on the street in the distance.

"Damn it! These puppet soldiers have all gotten away!" Liu Dayong said gritting his teeth. "We have to hurry over there. We can't let them kill us!"

"Captain, we don't have enough manpower. We need to notify our superiors first." Lu Yang said calmly.

"Besides, we are all new recruits. Wouldn't it be a waste to die? Besides, the puppet troops have all run away."

"You're right." Liu Dayong nodded. "Li Xiaohu, go inform the superiors. Everyone else, follow me and retreat!"

Several people quickly ran in the opposite direction of the fire. The street was in chaos. The Anti-Japanese Allied Forces soldiers were setting fires everywhere, and the puppet troops were fleeing in all directions.

Liu Dayong and his gang ran along the path towards Harbin.

On the way, a convoy of puppet troops drove by. Several of them tried to stop the vehicles but were ignored.

"Damn, these bastards, all they do is run away." Liu Dayong spat.

"Captain, running like this is not a solution. It's dozens of miles. Let's walk slowly and wait until there are no more cars." Lu Yang suggested.

"Ah, this is the only way. Li Wenhan, you're a good shooter, you go cover us."

Lu Yang thought, you are really good at making arrangements, asking me to cover our retreat?

Okay, I'll find some time to kill you all later.

I will go back alone to get promoted, and from now on I will be the captain of this team.

Several people were carrying guns and walking slowly.

Suddenly, there were screams of killing from behind.

A group of puppet soldiers were killed and ran towards this side, leaving their weapons and armor behind.

Unexpectedly, the people chasing them were a group of Japanese devils.

Liu Dayong lay in the grass, stunned.

Kill your own people?

Lu Yang observed carefully. He saw that those Japanese devils were skilled in shooting and were all tall and strong, not like the Japanese dwarfs.

Could it be that they were Anti-Japanese Allied Forces soldiers in disguise?

Lu Yang carefully observed the "Japanese devils," speculating in his mind. Their skillful marksmanship and impressive stature certainly didn't make them look like ordinary Japanese dwarfs. Could they be members of the Anti-Japanese United Army in disguise? This thought flashed through his mind.

"Captain, there's something wrong with these devils." Lu Yang said softly, his eyes fixed on those "Japanese devils".

"You figured it out?" Liu Dayong was a little surprised, but quickly regained his composure. "You're right, these guys don't look like Japanese."

"Let's not move for now and see what happens." Lu Yang suggested, already having a plan in mind.

Several people lay in the grass, quietly observing those "Japanese devils". They quickly dealt with the puppet army, quickly checked the battlefield, and then walked towards them.

"Damn, they're coming." Li Xiaohu said nervously, holding the gun tighter in his hand.

"Don't panic, wait until they get closer." Lu Yang said in a low voice, but he was thinking about how to deal with it in his heart.

Those "Japanese devils" were getting closer and closer. Lu Yang saw their faces clearly and found that they were indeed soldiers of the Anti-Japanese United Army. He decided to take a gamble.

"Captain, I'll go and try it out." Lu Yang said, slowly standing up, raising his hands, and walking towards those "Japanese devils."

"What are you doing?" Liu Dayong shouted in a low voice, but it was too late to stop him.

"Don't shoot, I'm one of you!" Lu Yang said loudly in Japanese.

Those "Japanese devils" were stunned and looked at each other. One of the leaders stepped forward and pointed his gun at Lu Yang.

"Who are you?" the leader asked in Japanese with a hint of vigilance in his eyes.

"I'm Li Wenhan, from the police station." Lu Yang replied, but secretly prayed in his heart that the other party could understand what he meant.

The leader looked at Lu Yang, then at Liu Dayong and others behind him, and suddenly said in Chinese: "Raise your hands!"
