Accidentally dressed as an empress
Chapter 219 Escape from the Mine
Yang Er and some of his fellow workers planned to sneak out of Xiling under the cover of night.
"Let's set out under cover of darkness and try to avoid the guards. Everyone, get ready and take all the food and water you can. We must get out of this hellhole alive!"
Encouraged by Yang Er, the workers began to move, packing their few belongings.
The night was like a black curtain, covering the entire Xiling area. The workers supported each other as their figures gradually disappeared into the vast night.
The night was as dark as ink, and you couldn't see your hand in front of you. The workers groped their way forward on the rugged mountain road, taking one step forward and one step back.
"It's pitch black and I can't see anything. How can I walk? I'm afraid I might miss a step and fall into the valley!" Old Zhang said tremblingly, his voice full of fear and worry.
"Don't panic, let's follow the slope of the mountain and we will find a way out." Yang Erqiang endured the pain and whispered to comfort everyone, but he was not sure in his heart and just didn't want to make everyone more scared.
After walking a short distance, everyone's dry food was almost gone.
"My stomach is growling with hunger and I really can't walk anymore." Xiao Li said weakly, holding his stomach.
"Hold on a little longer. If you don't leave quickly in this desolate mountain area, you'll be caught up by the pursuers!" Brother Wang patted Xiao Li's shoulder, his eyes filled with anxiety and helplessness.
As they were talking, a sudden strong wind blew up, dark clouds gathered quickly, and raindrops as big as beans came down with a "crackling" sound. "This damn weather is really unbearable!" someone cursed.
"Everyone, find a place to hide from the rain and avoid getting caught!" Yang Er shouted loudly, leading everyone to move towards a cave on the side of the road with difficulty.
As soon as they entered the cave, they heard a noisy sound of voices and footsteps coming from outside. "Oh no! The pursuers are coming!" Everyone's heart suddenly jumped into their throat.
"Don't make any noise, hide well!" Yang Er clenched his fists nervously, his eyes fixed on the cave entrance.
"They must be running this way, search them carefully!" The fierce voice of the pursuers came from outside.
The workers huddled in a corner of the cave, not daring to breathe, their hearts beating violently in their chests, as if they were about to jump out.
After waiting for a long time for the sound of the pursuers to fade away, the rain kept getting heavier and heavier, with no sign of stopping.
"If the rain doesn't stop, the mountain roads will become even more difficult to travel on. If a mudslide occurs, we'll all be finished," said a worker worriedly.
"Let's take it one step at a time. It's better than being caught and taken back." Yang Er gritted his teeth, his eyes revealing a firm determination. Although the road ahead is confusing and full of unknown dangers, they have no way to retreat.
The rain continued to fall until the second half of the night before it gradually subsided. Yang Er gently woke up his exhausted and drowsy co-workers and said, "Brothers, we have to leave quickly while the rain is still light." Everyone forced themselves to get up and continued on the slippery and muddy mountain road with heavy steps.
As we walked, we suddenly heard a low roar from the front, which seemed particularly eerie and terrifying in this silent forest.
"What's that sound? Could it be some wild beast?" Old Zhang grabbed the arm of his co-worker next to him in horror.
They cautiously approached the source of the sound, only to see a raging river swollen by the rain stretching ahead. The turbulent water was rushing, stirring up layers of white foam, blocking their way.
"What should I do? I can't cross the river, and the pursuers behind me may catch up at any time." Xiao Wang shouted in despair.
Yang Er looked around and found some scattered branches and vines by the river. "Everyone, hurry up and tie these branches and vines together to make a simple raft. We can cross the river."
Yang Er quickly gave orders and everyone took action immediately, busy tying up the raft and praying in their hearts that this fragile tool could support them across the river.
After finally completing the raft, everyone trembled as they boarded. As soon as they entered the water, they were tossed around by the turbulent current. "Hold steady! Let's use branches as oars and paddle to the other side!" Yang Er shouted, paddling hard with the branch in his hand.
The freezing cold river water kept splashing on their bodies, making them shiver, but they did not dare to stop and tried their best to fight against the water.
Finally, at a thrilling moment, the raft approached the other side. The workers jumped off the raft one after another, but before they could breathe a sigh of relief, they heard the shouts of the pursuers behind them.
"Run! They are catching up!" Yang Er shouted, and everyone ran desperately into the depths of the forest.
As dawn gradually broke, they came to a seemingly peaceful forest.
Just when everyone wanted to stop and take a breath, someone suddenly felt something empty under their feet. In an instant, the ground collapsed and everyone fell into a huge trap.
The bottom of the trap was covered with sharp stakes and thorns, and many workers were injured and screaming. "How is everyone? Is anyone seriously injured?" Yang Er asked anxiously, trying to find an exit from the trap.
At this time, they were hungry, tired and wounded, but the desire to survive supported them.
Yang Er and his companions struggled in the trap, searching for a way out. Suddenly, they heard the voices of pursuers overhead: "They must have fallen into the trap. Let's see where they can run this time!" The workers' hearts tightened, realizing that danger was approaching.
"Everyone, don't panic. Let's build a human ladder and send a few of our brothers up first, then we'll find a rope to pull us up," Yang Er whispered quickly. Everyone immediately took action, with the stronger workers at the bottom and the others climbing up on their shoulders.
After great effort, several agile workers finally climbed to the edge of the trap. They hurriedly looked around for vines and branches that could be used for rescue, then weaved them into ropes and slowly lowered the trap.
At this moment, the pursuers had arrived at the trap. They saw the workers in the trap and laughed: "You are a bunch of ignorant people who dare to escape. Today is the day you die!" As they said, they began to throw stones and branches into the trap. The workers dodged left and right in the trap. The situation was very critical.
"Pull quickly!" Yang Er shouted, and the workers in the trap held the rope tightly, and the people above pulled up desperately.
In the chaos, several workers were injured by stones, but they gritted their teeth and persevered.
Finally, most of the workers were pulled up. Without even taking a breath, everyone, led by Yang Er, ran desperately into the depths of the woods, with the pursuers following closely behind.
As they ran, they saw a steep hillside covered in thorns ahead, but there was no way back. "Brothers, charge! Once we get over this hillside, it will be harder for them to catch up!"
Yang Er shouted. The workers supported each other, using their hands and feet to climb up the hillside. The thorns scratched their skin, and blood flowed, but they did not hesitate.
After finally climbing over the hillside, we found ourselves in a valley shrouded in mist.
"What is this place? Why is there such thick fog?" Xiao Li asked, panting. "Never mind, let's go in and hide first. The pursuers may not dare to come in rashly." Yang Er said.
Everyone walked cautiously into the valley. The fog was thick and visibility was extremely low, so they could only move forward by feel. The road under their feet was bumpy and uneven, and people often tripped. "Everyone, be careful where you step, don't get separated," Yang Er kept reminding them.
A mysterious and oppressive atmosphere filled the valley. The surroundings were eerily quiet, with only the sounds of their heavy footsteps and rapid breathing.
Suddenly, a strange cry came from afar, echoing in the valley, making people's hair stand on end. The workers stopped in fear, huddled together, and looked around vigilantly.
"What the hell is going on in this place?" Old Zhang asked in a trembling voice. "Don't be afraid, let's move forward slowly, maybe we can find a way out." Although Yang Er was unsure, he pretended to be calm and comforted everyone.
They groped their way forward in the fog. After walking for an unknown amount of time, the fog gradually dissipated and an abandoned ancient temple appeared before them.
"Let's go in and take a look. Maybe we can find some food and a place to rest." Yang Er said.
The group slowly entered the temple. They searched around and found some dry firewood and a few worn-out pottery jars, suggesting someone had been here before. "Let's light a fire first so everyone can warm up and tend to their wounds," Yang Er said.
Just as they were about to light a fire, they heard a sudden clatter of footsteps and voices outside the temple. "Oh no! The pursuers are finally here!"
The workers' hearts were in suspense again. They quickly picked up anything around them that could be used as weapons, their eyes full of determination.
Although they were extremely exhausted, they were determined to fight to the end in order to survive.
