A Shocking Dream
Chapter 43: Thoughtless Past
Wu Nian… Wu Nian… My name is Wu Nian, I'm 25 years old, and I'm a Traditional Chinese Medicine doctor from New China. My family is a medical family: my father is a hospital director, my mother is a gynecologist, and my grandfather is a professor at a Traditional Chinese Medicine hospital. Coming from a family of doctors, I've been immersed in medicine since childhood. Ancient medical texts and miraculous herbs hold an endless allure, guiding me step by step into the world of medicine.
I was also deeply interested in my grandmother's inventions. She would always mysteriously tinker with all sorts of ingenious gadgets, their intricate designs leaving me in awe. Whenever she showed me a new invention, my eyes would sparkle with curiosity.
Influenced by my family, I not only mastered Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) but also developed a keen interest in the science of mechanisms. In my spare time, I often browsed ancient books on mechanisms, trying to unravel their mysteries. Sometimes, I combined the principles of TCM with the design of mechanisms, imagining the creation of miraculous inventions that would benefit humanity.
However, fate always takes unexpected turns. One day, on a peaceful day, the tranquility of my father's hospital was shattered by a sudden medical dispute. A patient, whose wife had died from illness, stubbornly believed the hospital had failed to provide adequate treatment. Filled with resentment, he developed a vengeful mentality. He frantically stabbed everyone in the hospital, plunging the entire facility into chaos and panic.
I vividly remember a five-year-old girl who was feeling unwell with a fever. Her grandmother went to pay the bill, leaving her sitting alone in the lobby. The patient, like a demon without reason, stabbed anyone he saw, and everyone gave him a wide berth. Soon, his gaze fixed on the helpless little girl. Unable to bear witness to such a tragedy, I immediately tried to reason with him. Meanwhile, others quickly carried the little girl away.
However, how could someone who has lost their mind listen to your reason? I sadly realized that my efforts were in vain. Unfortunately, in the chaos, he stabbed me with his knife. The moment he stabbed me, I felt a flash of pain that seemed to spread throughout my body, making it almost impossible to breathe.
My vision began to blur, and consciousness gradually faded. I knew that my life was coming to an end, ending what should have been a happy family life. I thought of my family, their faces flashing through my mind. I wished I could see them one more time, tell them how much I loved them. But it was too late. I slowly closed my eyes and fell into endless darkness.
When I slowly awoke, the world before me was strange and new. I was stunned to discover I had arrived in a completely new world, a fictional era where six kingdoms clashed endlessly, the flames of war raging everywhere. Initially, I believed I had arrived in the Warring States Period, and those historical events recurred in my mind. However, as time passed, I gradually realized that I was in a place called the Cloud Kingdom.
The Yun Kingdom, with its weakest military strength among the six nations, is predominantly female, a unique fact in this world rife with war. Yun's ability to coexist with the other five nations stems from its unique location. The region is characterized by perennial high temperatures, droughts, and scant rainfall, resulting in barren land and little in the way of resources worth competing for.
On the road to the Cloud Kingdom, a vast desert lies before us. Like a ferocious beast, its maw gapes open, waiting for the unprepared. Without a local guide, entering this desert is certain death. The swirling sandstorms and scorching sun are daunting.
I stood on the land of the Cloud Country, feeling the scorching heat, my heart filled with confusion and unease. I didn't know why I had come here, nor did I know where my future would lead me. But I knew that in this world full of challenges and unknowns, I must bravely face everything, finding my own path to survival while constantly searching for a way back to New China, because that was my home. I didn't belong here.
Watching the people struggling to survive in this harsh land of Yun Country, I felt a strong sense of responsibility. I decided to use my knowledge of mechanical engineering to create some survival skills for them.
I first created a mechanical bird. This miraculous invention could convey messages, making communication easier for the people of Yun Country. It also helped them catch fish, adding a layer of security to their lives. Next, I built a wind-powered waterwheel, which pumps water for crops whenever the wind blows. Watching these mechanical devices in action across the land of Yun Country, the people's eyes were filled with wonder and curiosity.
They thought I was sent from heaven, and that everything I did for them was a gift from heaven. I also taught them some crop cultivation methods. However, due to the terrain and weather conditions of Yun Country, we weren't successful the first year. But I didn't give up. Together with the people, I kept trying. Through constant failure and exploration, we accumulated experience.
Finally, in the third year, I successfully grew a crop. The lush green seedlings and golden ears of wheat seemed like a symbol of hope. The people were ecstatic, kneeling before me, their eyes filled with gratitude. Upon learning of this, the ruler of the Yun Kingdom hailed me as a Saint. Seeing the Yun Kingdom's weak military, I even created devices to defend them against foreign enemies. In their eyes, everything I did was magical. But they didn't know these were merely mechanical devices. From then on, I became the Saint of the Yun Kingdom, shouldering the heavy responsibility of leading its people towards a better life. I knew it was a heavy responsibility, but I was also confident that through my efforts, the future of the Yun Kingdom would be even brighter.
In my fifth year in Yun Country, my yearning grew stronger. I decided to explore other countries, to travel the world. When I shared this idea with the King of Yun Country, he didn't dissuade me. He nodded slightly, his eyes filled with emotion and understanding, and said, "You've done enough for our Yun Country. The world outside is even more exciting and prosperous. You should go and see it."
On the day of my departure, the King of Yun led the entire city to see me off. The streets were filled with people, their eyes filled with reluctance and longing. Looking at them, I felt a surge of emotion. I knew they were reluctant to see me go, but they didn't want to confine me; they understood my pursuits and aspirations.
I took a deep breath, turned resolutely, and left without looking back. It wasn't that I was heartless, but I was afraid that if I looked back, I would lose the courage to move forward. I didn't know when I would return—perhaps soon, perhaps never in this lifetime. But I knew that no matter where I went, this experience in Yun Country would be forever etched in my heart.
