God Slayer: Make Up for the Past

Chapter 9: Searching for the Cave

The eerie atmosphere of the temple's rear hall grew thicker, and Chu Feng and Pan Yue advanced cautiously. The air was filled with a sickening, sweet, fishy smell, like that of some decaying creature. The rear hall was empty, with only broken tiles and sawdust scattered on the ground, silently telling of the battle that had taken place there.

"The spirit boy's aura has disappeared..." Pan Yue closed his eyes, carefully sensing the fluctuations of spiritual energy around him, his brows furrowed. "But the evil spirits' aura has become even stronger. They seem to be heading in a certain direction."

Chu Feng looked in the direction Pan Yue pointed and discovered a hidden crack on the wall of the rear hall. The crack was narrow and almost imperceptible, and it would be easily overlooked if not carefully observed.

"There!" Chu Feng pointed at the crack and said, "The spirit boy and the evil spirit probably escaped from there."

The two men worked together to push aside the rubble blocking the crack, and a damp, rotten smell hit them. Behind the crack was a passage leading underground, pitch black and bottomless.

"Let's go!" Chu Feng jumped into the passage without hesitation, and Pan Yue followed closely behind.

The end of the passage led to a cave. A pungent smell emanated from the cave entrance, and the surrounding rock walls were covered with strange runes. The runes flickered with a dim light, like some ancient spell, which was chilling.

Elder Sun arrived breathlessly, looking at the cave before him with a gloomy expression: "Is this the clue you were talking about? A cave that harbors filth and dirt?"

"Elder Sun, we must go in." Chu Feng said firmly, "The spirit child is very likely inside, and..." He paused, looking at the flickering runes at the entrance of the cave, "I feel that this place is closely related to the activities of the evil spirits."

"Nonsense!" Elder Sun shouted angrily, "You're playing with your life! These runes are obviously extraordinary. If you rush in rashly, the consequences will be disastrous!"

"But we can't leave the spirit boy alone," Pan Yue analyzed calmly. "The evil spirit must have some purpose in taking the spirit boy away. If we don't take action now, it may be too late."

Chu Feng ignored Elder Sun's objection and walked into the cave first. Pan Yue followed closely behind. Although Elder Sun was dissatisfied, he had no choice but to follow them in.

The cave was pitch black, impossible to see. Chu Feng pulled a tinder from his backpack and lit a torch. The flames illuminated the surroundings. The cave walls were covered in stalactites, the ground was damp and muddy, and the air was filled with a suffocating sense of oppression.

"Be careful." Chu Feng warned in a low voice, "There may be a trap here."

The three of them walked forward cautiously. Elder Sun kept complaining about Chu Feng's recklessness along the way, constantly accusing him of bringing them into danger.

"Look at what you've done!" Elder Sun said, pointing to a bottomless pit on the ground. "If I hadn't reacted quickly, we would have fallen in right now!"

Chu Feng ignored Elder Sun's complaints. He was concentrating on observing his surroundings, trying to find any clues. Suddenly, he felt his feet go empty... "Pan Yue! Catch me!"

Before Chu Feng could finish his words, he began to fall. Pan Yue was quick to grab Chu Feng's arm and suspend him in mid-air.

"Chu Feng!" Pan Yue gritted his teeth and pulled upwards with all his strength, but Chu Feng's weight plus the force of gravity made it extremely difficult for him.

Elder Sun saw this and quickly stepped forward to help. Together, they pulled Chu Feng up.

"Cough, cough, cough..." Chu Feng's face was pale and he was coughing violently. He felt like his lungs were on fire and it was difficult for him to breathe.

"What's going on?" Pan Yue asked anxiously.

Chu Feng pointed at the dark abyss below: "Down there... there's poisonous fog..."

As soon as he finished speaking, a green mist rose from the bottom of the cave and quickly spread.

"Oh no! It's miasma!" Elder Sun's face changed drastically, "Hold your breath!"

However, it was too late. Chu Feng inhaled a large amount of poisonous mist and suddenly felt dizzy and weak. His vision went dark and he almost fainted.

Pan Yue quickly supported Chu Feng and anxiously called out, "Chu Feng! How are you?"

Chu Feng shook his head weakly. He felt his body growing weaker and weaker, and his consciousness began to blur. He knew that if he continued like this, he would soon lose consciousness and fall into the abyss.

"We must find an antidote!" Pan Yue looked around, his eyes quickly scanning the walls of the cave. He knew that in this situation, every second was crucial.

Suddenly, Pan Yue's eyes stopped at an inconspicuous plant on the cave wall. The plant was emerald green and exuded a faint fragrance, which was incompatible with the rotten smell around it.

"It's Qingxin Grass!" Pan Yue was delighted and quickly picked the Qingxin Grass, crushed it and stuffed it into Chu Feng's mouth.

The Qingxin Grass melted in his mouth, and a cool breath flowed down Chu Feng's throat into his body, making him feel refreshed. He coughed violently a few times, spitting out a mouthful of black blood, and his complexion gradually recovered.

"Are you feeling better?" Pan Yue asked with concern.

Chu Feng nodded. Although his body was still weak, at least his consciousness had become much clearer.

"This poisonous fog seems to have a suppressive effect on spiritual power," Pan Yue said solemnly, "My spiritual power circulation has also been affected."

Elder Sun's face was gloomy. Although he did not inhale much poisonous fog, his spiritual power was suppressed and his strength was greatly reduced.

At this moment, Chu Feng's eyes fell on an inconspicuous mark on the cave wall. It was a tiny scratch that could easily be overlooked if not carefully observed.

Chu Feng touched the scratch with his hand, and something clicked in his mind. He remembered that Ling Tong often carried a small knife with him, which he used to carve small things.

"This is... a mark left by the spirit boy!" Chu Feng said weakly, a glint in his eyes. "He... he is not completely controlled."

He pointed in the direction of the mark and said to Elder Sun, "Look, the spirit child is guiding us..."

Elder Sun looked at Chu Feng's determined eyes, and his heart couldn't help but waver. He began to re-evaluate Chu Feng's judgment...

Chu Feng forced himself to walk in the direction of the mark, with his weak body supported, and Pan Yue followed closely behind him.

"Wait..." Elder Sun suddenly spoke.

Elder Sun hesitated, looking in the direction of Chu Feng's finger. The tiny scratch was barely discernible in the dim cave. He still harbored doubts. How could a child possessed by an evil spirit leave a mark to guide them? Could this be a trick of the spirit? But the resolute glint in Chu Feng's eyes made him hesitate.

"Are you sure?" Elder Sun asked in a deep voice, with a hint of doubt in his tone.

Chu Feng took a deep breath, trying to calm the surging blood and qi within him. "I'm certain. Although the spirit boy is being controlled, perhaps a trace of clarity still remains deep within his consciousness. This mark is the hope he left for us."

Pan Yue also echoed, "Elder, we believe in Chu Feng. Besides, we have no other choice except this path."

Elder Sun looked at the two men's resolute expressions and finally nodded. Although he was old-fashioned, he was not ignorant. Now that he was in danger, he had no choice but to trust.

So, the three of them followed the marked direction and carefully went deeper into the cave. The cave was winding and the air was filled with a disgusting stench of decay. From time to time, water drops fell from the cave ceiling, echoing in the silent cave, adding a bit of eerie horror.

Suddenly, a chilling gust of wind blew from the depths of the cave, accompanied by a chilling roar. Then, a group of hideous evil spirits emerged from the darkness, their eyes flashing a dark green light, and their claws sharp as knives.

"Be careful!" Elder Sun shouted, rushing forward first. He waved his staff, and golden light burst out, repelling several evil spirits.

Chu Feng and Pan Yue also reacted quickly, each unleashing their Night Watch skills. Though weak, Chu Feng relied on his tenacious willpower to continually experiment with new Night Watch skills, unleashing his inner spiritual power to its fullest potential. The dagger in his hand transformed into streaks of silver light, weaving through the evil spirits, each swing carrying away a cloud of black mist.

Pan Yue calmly analyzed the weaknesses of the evil spirits. He found that these evil spirits were afraid of fire, so he used his fire-attributed spiritual power to burn each evil spirit to ashes.

Elder Sun had originally been pessimistic about Chu Feng's abilities, but now he had to admit that Chu Feng's performance far exceeded his expectations. Although this young man was young, he possessed a brave and fearless heart, as well as extraordinary fighting talent.

The battle lasted for a long time, and the three of them worked together to finally repel the evil spirits. However, just when they thought they could breathe a sigh of relief, the spirit child's cry for help suddenly came from the depths of the cave: "Help... Help me..." The voice was shrill and full of fear, as if something even more terrible was about to happen.

Chu Feng's face changed. He heard the despair in Ling Tong's voice, and a sense of foreboding rose in his heart. "Not good! Ling Tong is in danger!"

He ran towards the direction of the sound without hesitation, followed closely by Pan Yue and Elder Sun.

"Wait..." Elder Sun suddenly stopped. He sensed a powerful evil spirit coming from deep within the cave, causing him to feel a palpitation. "In there..."
