God Slayer: Make Up for the Past

Chapter 76: The Battle at the Core of the Evil Nest

A faint green light pulsated from its core, casting long, dancing shadows on the cavern walls. A low humming sound echoed through the cavern, a sound that vibrated deep within their chests, unsettling and ominous. The air grew thick, filled with a sickly sweet odor that stung their nostrils and made them dizzy. This was the epicenter of the plague, the source of the evil that had plagued their world for so long.

"It's... her," Chu Feng whispered, his voice strained. A figure of terrifying beauty emerged from the pulsating green light. The Evil Queen. Her skin gleamed like polished obsidian, her eyes burned with a malevolent green fire, and a crown of twisted bones crowned her head. She radiated power, an oppressive force that seemed to crush the very air around them.

The rescued captive, Lu, let out a choked gasp. He clutched his chest, his breaths rapid and shallow. The ordeal had taken its toll. He had fought valiantly, clinging to life with a tenacity that inspired all, but his wounds were too severe. With a final sigh, he slumped against the cave wall, his eyes glazing over. The light of life had gone out.

A wave of grief washed over them. They had tried so hard to save him, to bring him to safety. But it was too late. Chu Feng knelt beside Lu and closed his eyes. A deep sadness filled him, but he knew they couldn't dwell on it now. They had a mission to complete.

"He wouldn't want us to grieve," said Wei, the old night watchman, his voice gruff but full of sympathy. "He would want us to finish this."

"You're right." Chu Feng stood up, his gaze firm. He looked at his companions, each with a stern and resolute expression. "For Lu, and for all those who have fallen."

The Evil Queen let out a cold laugh that echoed through the caverns like a banshee's scream. "Foolish mortals," she hissed, "how dare you challenge me on my own turf?"

She raised her hand, and tendrils of dark energy snaked toward them. Wei stepped forward, his broadsword flashing, deflecting the attack. "Pan Yue, Bear, get to the back! Focus on destroying the core!"

Pan Yue, ever the strategist, nodded and began to chant, his hands gleaming with mysterious energy. Bell, the researcher, frantically fiddled with a complex device, his brow furrowed in concentration. He knew his role was crucial. Destroying the core might be their only chance of defeating the Queen.

Battle erupted. Wei, a seasoned warrior, engaged the queen in close combat, his blade a blur of light. Tong, a brave but reckless volunteer, charged in, his axe swinging wildly like a whirlwind of fury. But the queen was too powerful. She swatted Tong aside like a pesky insect, sending him crashing against the cave wall.

Chu Feng watched the scene unfold before him, his mind racing. He knew they were no match. They needed an advantage, something to turn the tide of battle. He glanced at the green energy swirling at the core, and a dangerous thought formed in his mind. He knew the risks, the immense strain it would place on his body, but he had no choice.

He took a deep breath, gathering his energy. It was time. Time to push his limits. Time to rewrite his destiny.

He turned to Pan Yue, his voice low and urgent. "Cover me!"

With a roar of fury, Chu Feng lunged at the Evil Queen... his movements and determination like a whirlwind. He struck with a speed and ferocity that surprised even himself, his blade a flash of silver lightning in the oppressive green light. The Evil Queen was momentarily startled by his audacity. She stumbled back as Chu Feng's strike landed, a searing wound slicing across her ebony arm. As black pus oozed from the wound, an enraged scream echoed through the chamber.

The imps, a grotesque mass of writhing shadows and twisted limbs, turned their attention to Chu Feng. Their initial confusion quickly gave way to fury. They surged forward, a dark tide seeking to engulf him. But Chu Feng was prepared. He weaved through their ranks, his blade swift as a blur, each strike precise and deadly. For a glorious moment, he felt invincible, a beacon of hope against the encroaching darkness.

However, it was fleeting. As if summoned by the queen's wrath, the imperishable demons began to coalesce, their individual forms merging into a single, pulsating mass of dark energy. This swirling vortex of malevolence solidified, forming an impenetrable barrier at its core, blocking Chu Feng's path. The humming intensified, the air thickened, and the sickly sweet odor became almost unbearable. The barrier radiated with raw power, easily deflecting Chu Feng's attack. He stumbled back, the force of the rebounding energy sending a shiver through his body.

"Chu Feng!" Pan Yue called out, his voice tight with worry. He knew that attacking the barrier directly would be suicidal.

Chu Feng gritted his teeth, his heart filled with frustration. He was so close to his goal. He could feel the heat of the core radiating through the barrier, a tangible manifestation of their goal, so close yet so far away.

"We have to find a weakness!" Wei shouted, his voice echoing through the cave. He parried a blow from a small demon that slipped past the barrier, his movements noticeably slowed by the queen's oppressive aura.

Pan Yue's eyes narrowed as he began analyzing the barrier with intense concentration, his hands tracing arcane symbols in the air. The air around him shimmered as he probed for weaknesses, seeking holes in the near-perfect defense. The barrier's humming seemed to react to his probing, its pulsations becoming irregular, its surface rippled like disturbed water.

"There!" Pan Yue shouted, pointing to a small part of the barrier where the energy seemed less dense, the swirling darkness less intense. "Concentrate your attacks there! That's a weak spot!"

"Understood!" Wei roared, rallying the others. He raised his greatsword, its surface gleaming with a faint, ethereal light. Tong, battered but undaunted, rejoined the fray, axe raised high. Even Bell, the researcher, mustered a flicker of courage, brandishing a small, improvised weapon he'd cobbled together from scavenged parts.

With renewed resolve, they focused their attacks on the designated weak points. Wei's powerful strikes slammed into the barrier, sending ripples radiating outward. Tong's furious attacks joined the assault, steadily weakening the barrier's integrity. Even Bell's feeble attacks, fueled by desperation and adrenaline, seemed to have some effect.

The Evil Queen screamed in rage, her eyes burning with hatred. She gestured toward the barrier, reinforcing it with her own power. The weak spot began to shrink, and the swirling darkness intensified once more. The battle reached a fever pitch, a desperate struggle against overwhelming odds. It seemed as if the fate of their world hung in the balance.

Wei, his face covered in sweat and dirt, turned to Chu Feng, his eyes filled with grim determination. "Chu Feng," he said, his voice strained, "I... I need..." Wei, his face covered in sweat and dirt, turned to Chu Feng, his eyes filled with grim determination. "Chu Feng," he said, his voice strained, "I... I need... a distraction! Just for a moment! Give me a chance!"

Chu Feng understood immediately. Wei was planning something big, something that required his full attention. He nodded, his heart pounding in his chest. "I'll give you a chance!" he roared, and with renewed strength, he rushed towards the Evil Queen.

He rushed forward recklessly, dodging and weaving his way through the minions that gathered around him. He knew it was a suicidal charge, a feint to buy Wei the time he needed. But he didn't hesitate. His friends were fighting for their lives, for the world. He wouldn't let them down.

The Evil Queen, enraged by his persistence, focused her attention on him. Tendrils of dark energy lashed out, attempting to entangle him. But Chu Feng was like a whirlwind, too fast to be grasped. He dodged one tentacle and leaped over another, his blade flashing like lightning. He even grazed the Queen's cheek once more, leaving a shallow cut and drawing another furious scream from her.

"Keep going, Chu Feng!" Pan Yue shouted, his voice filled with a mixture of admiration and fear. He continued to manipulate the barrier, ignoring the queen's efforts to strengthen it, always leaving the weak point open.

"We're almost there!" Tong roared, his axe swinging with a dazzling display. He raised his weapon, muscles tensing, and with a resounding thud, he brought the axe down on the barrier. A small crack appeared, spreading outward like a spiderweb.

Seeing Tong's success, Chu Feng felt a surge of hope. He redoubled his efforts, pushing himself beyond his limits. He was exhausted and bruised, but he couldn't give up now. Not when they were so close to success.

He looked back at his companions. Determination was written on their faces, their eyes burning with a fiery glint. He saw the unwavering focus in Pan Yue's eyes, the immense power in Tong's swing of the axe, and even the surprising resilience in the timid attacks of the little bear. A wave of gratitude welled up in him. These were his friends, his family. They were fighting alongside him, no matter the cost.

"We can do this!" Chu Feng shouted, his voice filled with determination. "We will break through!" His words were a battle cry, a testimony to their shared resolve.

Wei saw his opportunity and took a deep breath. He closed his eyes for a moment, gathering his strength. Then, with a deep roar, he unleashed his most powerful attack. The greatsword shone with an intense, blinding light, and he slashed with all his might at the weak point of the barrier.

The cave shook with the force of the blow. The barrier rippled violently, its weak spot rapidly widening. A deafening crack echoed through the cave, followed by a blinding flash of light.

As the light faded, the barrier vanished. The core, radiating raw power, lay before them. But something was wrong. The core wasn't smooth and level as they'd expected. It was covered in strange, intricate runes, shimmering with an eerie, otherworldly light. The hum intensified, becoming a low, rhythmic pulsation that seemed to resonate in their very bones.

Wei dropped his sword, panting. He stared at the runes, his brow furrowed in confusion. "What…what are these?" he whispered, barely audible above the pulsating hum.

Chu Feng stepped forward, his eyes fixed on the glowing runes. He hesitantly extended a hand...
