God Slayer: Make Up for the Past
Chapter 19: Wrong Path Choice
Torches crackled, thick smoke filled the air, illuminating two nearly identical forked roads ahead. Water droplets dripped down the damp stone walls, like an ancient timer, tickling everyone's nerves. Both roads led to the depths of the unknown, and to even deeper mysteries.
"Two paths..." Chu Feng repeated, a subtle hint of anxiety in his tone. His hands gripped the torch tightly, his knuckles turning white. His intuition told him that the choice was crucial.
Pan Yue's brow furrowed, his gaze darting back and forth between the two forked roads. "Wait, Chu Feng, shouldn't we take a closer look? These two roads are identical. What if we take the wrong one..." His voice was tinged with worry, and it was especially clear in the silence of the underground space.
"What are you looking at? What's so good about it? Aren't there just two roads? Why not just pick one?" Zheng Shouye interrupted impatiently, his tone thick with sarcasm. "I think some people are just cowards and a waste of time!"
Chu Feng ignored Zheng Shouren's provocation. He stared at one of the forks in the road with a determined look. "Take this one."
Pan Yue's expression changed slightly. "Chu Feng, are you sure? We don't have any clues. This is too risky!"
"I know it's risky," Chu Feng's voice was low and powerful, "but time waits for no one, we must find a way out as soon as possible." His tone was unquestionable, as if he had already made the final decision.
Archaeologist Ma put down his map and walked to the fork in the road, carefully observing his surroundings. He touched the cold stone wall with his hand, hoping to find some clues. "Indeed, these two roads don't look any different..." he muttered to himself, looking up at Chu Feng's determined eyes, but ultimately did not raise any objections.
"You're always so impulsive!" Pan Yue's tone became more serious. "What if this road is a dead end? We'll be trapped here!"
Chu Feng turned around and looked directly into Pan Yue's eyes, a complex glint in his eyes. "I trust my intuition," he paused, his tone softening. "Besides, even if I'm wrong, we can always return the same way, right?"
"But..." Pan Yue wanted to say something else, but was interrupted by Chu Feng.
"No buts! We have wasted too much time!" Chu Feng's tone became tough. He raised the torch and resolutely stepped into one of the forks in the road.
"Chu Feng!" Pan Yue couldn't help but shout, but Chu Feng's figure had already disappeared into the darkness. He gritted his teeth and finally followed him.
Archaeologist Ma sighed and followed him into the fork in the road. Night Watchman Zheng was left standing alone, a sneer on his face. "Self-righteous..." he muttered, then stepped inside.
Torchlight flickered in the narrow passage, illuminating the damp stone walls and uneven ground. The air was filled with a suffocating smell of decay.
Chu Feng walked in front, his steps firm and powerful, as if he was full of confidence in the road ahead. From time to time, he looked back at Pan Yue and Ma the archaeologist behind him, with a hint of encouragement in his eyes.
After walking for a distance, Chu Feng suddenly stopped. The torch in his hand illuminated a stone wall in front of him, on which were some strange symbols engraved.
"What is this?" Pan Yue walked to Chu Feng and observed the symbols carefully.
Chu Feng remained silent. He reached out and gently stroked the symbols, feeling their icy touch… His fingers lingered on a spiral symbol, feeling the subtle incisions beneath. “I don’t know,” he whispered, his voice echoing in the narrow passage, “but I think… it’s important.”
"Important?" Pan Yue's tone was full of doubt. "It's just some doodles. How do you know it's important?" He pointed to another fork in the road. "We should go back and explore another way instead of wasting time here."
"No, I trust my intuition." Chu Feng's tone was firm, without the slightest wavering. "These symbols... they are guiding us."
"Guidance? Are you kidding?" Zheng Shouye sneered, "I think you've been bewitched by these weird talismans!"
"Shut up!" Chu Feng turned his head sharply, glaring at Zheng Shouyeren fiercely. The firelight reflected on his face, making it look even more stern.
Archaeologist Ma saw this and quickly stepped forward to persuade them, "Calm down, everyone. Now is not the time for internal strife." He turned to Chu Feng and said gently, "Xiao Chu, I know you're determined, but what Pan Yue said makes sense. We don't have any evidence to prove that this path is correct. What if..."
"No chance of that happening!" Chu Feng interrupted Archaeologist Ma. "I've made up my mind!" He pointed to the fork in the road on the left. "This is it!"
Pan Yue couldn't bear it any longer. He stepped forward, pointed at Chu Feng's nose and roared, "Chu Feng! You are too stubborn! Have you ever thought about what the consequences will be if we take the wrong road? We might be trapped here and die!"
"Consequences? Of course I've thought about it!" Chu Feng's tone also became excited, "But if we don't take this path, we will never know the truth! Isn't the purpose of our coming here to find the truth?!"
"The truth? Is your so-called truth based on these meaningless symbols?" Pan Yue's voice trembled with anger. "You are blindly confident and stupid!"
Chu Feng took a deep breath and tried to suppress the anger in his heart. He ignored Pan Yue and turned to walk towards the fork in the road on the left.
"Chu Feng!" Pan Yue shouted desperately, but Chu Feng did not look back, and his figure quickly disappeared into the darkness.
Archaeologist Ma sighed helplessly and patted Pan Yue on the shoulder. "Let's go, let's follow him. Even if he's wrong, we have to bring him back."
Pan Yue clenched his fists tightly, but finally followed.
The passage on the left was narrower, the air more humid, and a musty smell filled his nostrils. Chu Feng held the torch and moved forward cautiously. He carefully observed his surroundings, not missing a single detail.
After walking for about ten minutes, Chu Feng suddenly found some strange footprints on the ground. These footprints were very small, like the footprints of some animal, but they were not like the footprints of any animal he had ever seen.
He squatted down and carefully observed the footprints. They were very shallow and could not be seen without careful observation. He walked in the direction of the footprints and found that they became more and more dense, and finally disappeared in an inconspicuous corner.
Chu Feng shone his flashlight into the corner and found a loose stone. He pushed it hard, and the stone made a dull sound, then slowly moved away, revealing a dark hole.
Chu Feng's heart skipped a beat, and he felt an inexplicable excitement. He took a deep breath, held up the torch, and walked into the cave entrance...
"This..." Pan Yue looked at the stone door that appeared before him, covered with complex runes, and he couldn't help but gasp. Chu Feng reached out and touched the runes on the stone door, and a cold energy instantly spread throughout his body.
Beyond the cave entrance lay not a bottomless abyss, but a small stone chamber. The air in the cramped space was heavy, thick with the scent of ancient dust. The flickering light of a torch illuminated a towering stone tablet in the center of the chamber. It was densely engraved with strange runes, like some mysterious language, speaking of unknown secrets.
"This..." Pan Yue looked at the stone tablet in front of him and couldn't help but gasp. His previous doubts and dissatisfaction with Chu Feng turned into shock and curiosity.
Chu Feng reached out and lightly touched the runes on the stone door. A cold energy instantly spread throughout his body, causing him to shudder involuntarily. This feeling was familiar, reminding him of his previous experience fighting the evil spirit.
Archaeologist Ma rubbed his hands excitedly, donned his reading glasses, and leaned in to examine the stone tablet carefully. "This is... ancient writing! Incredible!" He muttered to himself as he deciphered it, his expression growing increasingly excited. "These runes record... the origin of evil spirits! They're not from another world, but... but..."
"What is it?" Chu Feng and Pan Yue asked in unison, eager to know the answer.
The horse archaeologist took a deep breath and said slowly, "They are... formed by the negative emotions of human beings - fear, resentment, despair!"
This answer resonated like a thunderbolt in the hearts of the three. It turned out that the enemy they had been fighting was not an external invasion, but originated from humanity itself.
Pan Yue looked at Chu Feng, his eyes full of admiration. "How...how did you know this was the right path?"
Chu Feng shook his head, "I don't know either, it's just... an intuition." He thought of the spiral symbol. Perhaps, there really was something guiding him.
The rift between the two of them vanished at this moment.
At that moment, a chilling gust of wind blew from the corner of the stone chamber, and a tall figure slowly emerged. It was shrouded in black mist, and its scarlet eyes were like two will-o'-the-wisp flames, flashing with a chilling light.
"Tomb spirit!" Archaeologist Ma exclaimed and hid behind Chu Feng and Pan Yue.
Chu Feng immediately drew his sword and stood in front of Pan Yue and Archaeologist Ma. "I'll deal with it, you protect yourselves!"
The tomb spirit let out a shrill roar, brandishing its huge bone claws and lunging towards Chu Feng. Its speed was astonishing, and its strength was incomparably powerful.
Chu Feng was initially intimidated by the tomb spirit's aura and retreated repeatedly. The tomb spirit's attacks poured down like a violent storm, leaving him with almost no chance to breathe.
But Chu Feng did not give up. He recalled his previous experience fighting evil spirits, tried to calm himself down, and found the rhythm of the tomb spirit's attack.
Gradually, he began to adapt to the tomb spirit's attack style and found some flaws. He seized the opportunity and swung his sword to counterattack. The blade slashed through the tomb spirit's body, bringing up a burst of sparks.
The tomb spirit roared in pain and attacked even more fiercely. But Chu Feng was no longer as passive as before. He nimbly dodged the tomb spirit's attacks and waited for an opportunity to counterattack.
The fierce battle lasted for a while. Although Chu Feng temporarily resisted the attack of the tomb spirit, he also felt that his physical strength was gradually exhausted.
Suddenly, the body of the tomb spirit glowed with a faint light... The air around it seemed to freeze... Chu Feng and the others stared at it nervously...
