Chapter 248: Su Wenbo's Wedding
As the wedding date drew closer, Yun'an County became increasingly bustling, with the streets buzzing with talk of Su Wenbo and Qin Shuang's wedding. After finishing his duties at the county office, Su Wenbo would often sneak in a visit to the Qin family's home, where he and Qin Shuang would count the wedding candies and fruit, or write invitations to relatives and friends. Every little gesture was filled with sweetness.
Su Zhiyuan and Xiao also returned to Sujia Village to prepare for their son's wedding. Their younger sister Su Qing, now Princess Zhan, also returned! The Su family was bustling with activity!
Three days before their wedding, Su Wenbo took Qin Shuang to the Yue Lao Temple outside the city to pray for blessings. The temple was ablaze with incense, overflowing with devotees. Hand in hand, they knelt devoutly on their mats, gazing up at the benevolent Yue Lao statue, silently vowing to be together forever, filled with joy. As they rose, Su Wenbo pulled a smooth jade pendant from his sleeve and gently tied it around Qin Shuang's waist. He softly said, "I found this especially for you. May it protect your safety and happiness, and stay with you forever." Qin Shuang gently stroked the pendant, tears welling in her eyes, and nodded in agreement.
Back in Qin Shuang's boudoir, her sisters were also gathered, chattering away as they prepared for her wedding. Some were ironing her wedding gown, the crimson silk smooth and radiant under the charcoal fire; others were meticulously weaving heart-shaped knots to decorate the wedding bed, symbolizing the couple's unity.
Finally, on the day of the wedding, before daybreak, the Su family's wedding procession set out in a grand ceremony. Su Wenbo rode a tall horse, draped in red silk, and looked very high-spirited. The procession beat gongs and drums, and the sound of suonas resounded through the air. As they marched, people flocked to the streets to watch and cheered. Arriving at the Qin family, Su Wenbo went through many difficulties and finally entered the boudoir to see Qin Shuang. Seeing his beloved dressed up, he was stunned for a moment, and after a long while, he came to his senses, took Qin Shuang's hand, and said gently: "Shuang'er, I'm here to take you home."
Qin Shuang got on the bridal sedan, swaying along the way. Su Wenbo accompanied her on horseback the entire time, occasionally looking back at the sedan, his eyes full of doting.
Arriving at the Su residence, one could see from afar that the mansion was festooned with lights and overflowing with guests. A large red lantern hung high at the entrance, casting a warm glow across the bluestone pavement, creating a festive and lively atmosphere. Firecrackers crackled, and amidst the thick smoke, the bridal sedan came to a steady stop. Su Wenbo dismounted, scurried over to the sedan, lifted the curtain himself, and whispered, "Shuang'er, we're home."
The bride stepped out of the sedan chair, her figure graceful and delicate, as she moved towards the brazier. The flames in the brazier were crackling and blazing. Qin Shuang lifted her skirt slightly and stepped over the brazier with careful grace, symbolizing a prosperous future and the removal of bad luck. The guests cheered, and Su Wenbo stared at Qin Shuang intently, his eyes filled with anxiety and concern, fearing she might make a mistake.
Next came the ceremony. Su Wenbo and Qin Shuang stood side by side in front of the hall, the ceremonial officer yelling, "First, bow to Heaven and Earth—" They knelt in unison, kowtowed solemnly, expressing gratitude for the blessings of Heaven and Earth. "Second, bow to your parents—" Su Wenbo's grandparents, parents, and grandparents sat in the hall, beaming from ear to ear as the newlyweds bowed in gratitude for their upbringing and loving care. "Husband and wife bow to each other—" Their smiles, brimming with the deep affection of years of knowing and loving each other, a gentle bow sealed their fates.
After the ceremony, Qin Shuang was escorted to the bridal chamber. Red candles blazed brightly within, the flames of the dragon and phoenix wedding candles flickering gently, filling the room with a warm glow. The bed was covered with a brocade quilt embroidered with mandarin ducks, scattered with longans, red dates, and peanuts, symbolizing the early birth of a son. Qin Shuang sat quietly by the bed, her veil perked up, listening to the laughter and clinking of glasses as the wedding banquet began outside. Su Wenbo was being coaxed into drinking by the guests, but he was concerned about Qin Shuang in the bridal chamber. After several rounds of drinking, he took advantage of a break to rush back to the bridal chamber.
Upon entering the room and seeing Qin Shuang sitting there obediently, Su Wenbo's heart instantly melted. He tiptoed closer, picked up the scale bar on the table, and gently lifted Qin Shuang's veil. The veil slipped away, revealing Qin Shuang's bright and charming face, her eyes watery and her cheeks flushed. Su Wenbo stared at her, mesmerized, for a moment before recovering and whispering in her ear, "Shuang'er, from today on, you are finally my wife." Qin Shuang glanced at him angrily, "Hurry up and greet the guests! Don't be so rude." Su Wenbo smiled and agreed, then hurried back to the wedding banquet. He knew that this lively banquet was everyone's blessing for their love and a testament to the sweet beginning of their new life. After the guests had enjoyed themselves, their long, tender night had just begun.
At that moment, Su Qing pushed open the door and entered, holding a bowl of steaming noodles steadily in her hands. A smile spread across her face, and her brisk footsteps created a breeze that flickered the red candle flames in the bridal chamber. "Sister-in-law, you must be hungry! I brought you a bowl of noodles! Eat something to fill your stomach! Getting married is hard!" Su Qing's crisp voice rang out particularly clearly in the quiet and ambiguous atmosphere of the bridal chamber.
Qin Shuang looked up when she heard the voice, a hint of surprise and emotion flashed in her eyes, and she hurriedly stood up to greet her: "Qing'er, thank you for still thinking about me, come in quickly." She stretched out her hand to take the bowl of noodles, but Su Qing playfully turned sideways and said with a smile: "Sister-in-law, please sit down. You are the protagonist today, how can I trouble you to do it." As she said that, she walked a few steps to the small table beside the bed, gently put the bowl down, and carefully arranged the chopsticks.
Su Qing took Qin Shuang's hand and asked her to sit next to her. She looked at her sister-in-law in her gorgeous dress with sparkling eyes: "Sister-in-law, you are so beautiful today. My brother is so lucky to marry you!" Qin Shuang patted her hand gently and said softly: "It is also my blessing to have such a caring sister-in-law like you. I haven't eaten all day and I am really hungry, hehe!"
As they were talking, a commotion erupted outside. It must have been Su Wenbo being forced to drink again by the guests. Qin Shuang's face showed worry. Su Qing seemed to see through her thoughts and comforted her, "Sister-in-law, don't worry. My brother can handle alcohol well and can handle it. Besides, we have a few brothers to help him out, so he won't get drunk." Then, she handed the chopsticks to Qin Shuang and said, "Try this noodle. How is it?"
Qin Shuang gently picked up a piece of noodles with her chopsticks and put it into her mouth. The delicious soup instantly spread across her taste buds. She couldn't help but praise, "It's delicious, Qing'er, thank you very much." Su Qing looked at Qin Shuang's satisfied expression and smiled even more happily, "It's delicious. After you finish eating, I'll bring you some fruit."
"Thank you Qing'er!"
As they were talking, the door was pushed open again, and Su Wenbo walked in, reeking of alcohol. Seeing his sister there, he was startled at first, then smiled and said, "Little sister, you are here. I was thinking of coming back to see if your sister-in-law is hungry." Su Qing stood up and pretended to be angry, "Brother, you are too slow. I brought noodles to my sister-in-law a long time ago. You go take care of my sister-in-law quickly, and I won't disturb you." After that, he skipped out the door, leaving the newlyweds smiling at each other, and starting their warm time in this joyous bridal chamber.
After they drank the wedding wine, Su Wenbo leaned over and blew out a few candles. The light in the room dimmed, leaving only the dragon and phoenix candles still burning brightly. He gently embraced Qin Shuang in his arms, his breath filled with the delicate fragrance of her hair. Qin Shuang trembled slightly, and slowly raised her arms to wrap around his waist.
Without too many words, all the emotions flowed and heated up in this embrace...
