Rebirth and making money first
Chapter 62 Facing the Ups and Downs of Life
Zhang Jing returned to her dorm room and immediately turned on her computer, staring intently at her trading screen. She paused for a moment and carefully examined the market, only to discover that some of her stocks had plummeted significantly. Although she felt a little unhappy, she understood that the ups and downs of the stock market were commonplace. So, she decisively closed the screen and returned to writing her novel. She knew that only by writing compelling stories and gaining recognition could she secure a stable and ongoing income.
Zhang Jing called Uncle Zhang and told him about his son, Zhang Yongle, who had come to see him. Uncle Zhang told Zhang Jing not to worry about his son because the house had been sold and all the belongings belonged to Zhang Jing, so she could rest assured. Zhang Jing further explained that she had reached a settlement with Zhang Yongle, and that Zhang Yongle had even asked his superiors at work to take better care of him.
"Uncle Zhang, when did I become your goddaughter? Your son has already acknowledged me as his sister and introduced me to my workplace leader. I really don't know how to respond, so I called to ask you."
"Hahaha, Jing, I've always admired you. At the time, I deliberately said those words to anger him, hoping to inspire his ambition. I didn't expect you to not expose me. Now it seems that everything is the best arrangement! Since he has acknowledged you as his sister, we can find a suitable time to hold a formal ceremony."
"Uncle Zhang, how dare I try to marry someone so high up? This is truly too embarrassing."
"What's there to be embarrassed about? Don't you want to?" Uncle Zhang asked.
"No, no, no, Uncle Zhang, of course I am willing. I just feel that I don't deserve such good treatment." Zhang Jing hurriedly explained.
"Haha, silly child, you deserve better. Just treat this place as your home from now on." Uncle Zhang said with a smile.
"Thank you, Uncle Zhang. I will cherish this fate." Zhang Jing said gratefully.
"By the way, if you get tired of living at home, you can come back to Shenzhen anytime. I haven't changed those furniture and wardrobes yet." Zhang Jing reminded.
Uncle Zhang said, "Godfather appreciates your kindness. The things inside are too big to move. If you young people don't like them, just replace them." Zhang Jing said, "Then I'll ask Brother Yongle and Sister-in-law if they want them. If they do, I'll send them to their home."
Uncle Zhang said, "Just contact them yourselves, don't ask me. If you need anything, ask Yongle for help. If you can't solve it, call me." He hung up. Zhang Jing muttered to herself, "Looks like this move is going to be quite a hassle." She decided to take advantage of her break to clean up the house; after all, this was her future home."
Zhang Yongle had no interest in the old furniture and simply told Zhang Jing to deal with it herself. Zhang Jing sighed helplessly, thinking that this guy was really good at shirking responsibility. However, since that was the case, she would have to find a solution herself. She decided that the door locks needed to be replaced, so she went out and bought new ones.
When she walked into the bedroom, she saw the bed and wardrobe. She really didn't like sleeping in a bed that had been slept in by others, but considering her limited funds, she didn't dare to make a big change. After some inquiries, she learned about a second-hand furniture market and decided to take a taxi there to have a look.
Upon entering the secondhand furniture market, Zhang Jing's eyes lit up. The selection was truly dazzling, with everything one could imagine. Furthermore, the prices were significantly more affordable than brand new furniture. This pleasantly surprised Zhang Jing, and she began to browse.
Zhang Jing was even more excited to learn that the market offered a home-based furniture recycling service. She immediately inquired about the price, knowing it wouldn't be high. Sure enough, they said they needed an on-site evaluation before giving a specific price. Without further ado, Zhang Jing took them home.
Upon arriving home, Zhang Jing decisively stated that she no longer needed the bed and wardrobe, and requested that all beds in the three rooms be removed. Two of the wardrobes were built-in and couldn't be moved, so they had to remain. She also had to discard the double-door wardrobe in the other room. In the end, the staff quoted a total price of 1800 yuan, which left Zhang Jing somewhat frustrated. But there was nothing she could do, considering her current financial situation.
The people from the furniture city also said, "Beauty, we are selling the old ones and buying the new ones. Please consider it. If you agree, we can move out today. You can also come to our furniture city to buy some things you like. We will provide delivery and installation." Hearing this, Zhang Jing was a little hesitant, but she still gritted her teeth and listed the prices of furniture such as the dining table, washing machine, and refrigerator. After some bargaining, she finally sold them for 2500 yuan, and the people from the furniture city took all the items away.
Meanwhile, the appraisers were still milling about the rooms, seemingly hoping to find more furniture to take home, but Zhang Jing had already decided not to sell anything else. A car from the furniture store arrived quickly, and several strong young men came upstairs. Suddenly, Zhang Jing had an idea. She stopped them and told them she needed to check the closet and bed again to see if there were any treasures hidden by the old man that might have been accidentally transported away.
The leader expressed understanding and assured them that they knew the rules and that once they left, everything would be clear. Zhang Jing watched them begin work, opening the wardrobe from top to bottom and carefully pounding on the top. Finding nothing unusual, Zhang Jing waved her hand, signaling they could move on.
However, just as the wardrobe was about to be moved, someone suddenly shouted in surprise, "Huh? What's that?" Everyone looked over and saw a cloth bag hidden behind the wardrobe. Zhang Jing walked over and picked up the bag. It felt heavy, and she couldn't help but feel curious, but she put it away first.
Then, when the wardrobe was lifted, they discovered a small drawer hidden underneath. Zhang Jing quickly called the movers over and carefully opened the drawer. The outermost layer of the drawer was wrapped in a plastic bag, with another layer of cloth inside. She also packed these things and set them aside.
The young man at the furniture store jokingly asked, "Could there be the old man's passbook in here?" Zhang Jing smiled but didn't answer. Instead, she continued to work. She carefully checked the three beds, even looking under them. Only after confirming that nothing was missing did she let them move out.
She suddenly remembered a story she'd heard in her past life: some corrupt officials would hide money in their mattresses. So, she decided to keep the double mattress, reasoning that since the bed had already been sold, she'd have to make do with the mattress. As for the two wooden beds, they were visible through, so there was no need to inspect them.
Because the mattress was next, further wrangling ensued over the price. Finally, Zhang Jing offered to trade the dining table's matching chairs, and both parties finally reached a satisfactory settlement. She secured 2500 yuan, politely sent the furniture buyer away, and promised to return if needed.
Zhang Jing grabbed a pair of scissors and cut open the mattress, examining it thoroughly. All she had was rusty springs and tattered cotton. Dust flew everywhere, and Zhang Jing collapsed on the sofa, frustrated. To reassure herself, she decided to open both bags to see what valuables lay inside.
The cloth bag at the back of the cabinet was heavy. Zhang Jing opened it and found that there were several layers. She removed the plastic sheet, then the newspaper, and the silk cloth. When she opened it, she found that it was a pile of gold goods: gold rings, gold earrings, gold necklaces, gold bracelets, and four 100g gold bars.
Zhang Jing guessed that it was Zhang Yongle's mother's private collection, so she put it aside for the time being. She opened another small package and peeled off several layers. Inside was indeed a passbook and a securities subscription certificate. The accounts were all opened by the same person: Wang Qiuhua.
It must have been Zhang Yongle's mother's belongings. Inside was a piece of paper with her bank and securities passwords. There were also transaction records. The old lady had actually bought stocks! There was 28 yuan in her passbook.
This was a hot potato, and Zhang Jing didn't know whether to tell Uncle Zhang or Zhang Yongle. Looking at the shattered mattress, she wanted to scold herself, "I'm crazy about money."
Zhang Jing insisted that she couldn't be greedy for ill-gotten gains. She planned to return the things to Uncle Zhang and his son. After all, they were left to his family by the old man. Although she had never met the old man, Zhang Jing didn't dare to have any extravagant thoughts. There is a god above us!
Zhang Yongle and his father were stunned when they received Zhang Jing's call. They had assumed that she had taken all of his wife's (and mother's) property, but they hadn't expected such a dramatic turn of events. Life is a play, and play is life.
