Rebirth and making money first
Chapter 53 There is no easy money in the world
In a previous life, Zhang Jing heard a colleague's brother say that whether you're traveling or just going to gamble, remember to only gamble once in Macau. Win or lose, gamble once and then leave, otherwise you'll regret it. Macau casinos are incredibly treacherous.
Now that Zhang Jing had lost 200, she finally understood that the game was manipulated. They let gamblers place their bets first, then reap the rewards based on the outcome. Of course, they also had to offer some sweet treats, otherwise who would want to play again?
If I won too much, even 100 or 100 wouldn't be easy to get out. My little over was just enough, so I could leave. Before I could move, someone tugged at my clothes from behind. Turning around, I saw the old lady. Zhang Jing took the opportunity to speak up. The old lady said she'd lost and wanted to borrow some chips to play with her. She'd been playing bridge and only had left. It wasn't enough for a round, so she wanted to borrow from Zhang Jing so they could play together.
After a long explanation, Zhang Jing finally understood and readily gave her 100 chips. She didn't care if she won, so she went to gamble. Zhang Jing went to the slot machine and waited. Each slot machine had a different design: some were cartoons, some were laughing, and even some were the God of Wealth...
Zhang Jing didn't know how to play. She watched the fat old man next to her stuff money into the machine and count it again and again. She heard the machine make a series of noises, then stop and the old man stuffed more money in. This cycle repeated several times. The God of Wealth slot machine continued to smile, but the fat old man's face darkened. When he stood up, he saw Zhang Jing staring at her and asked, "Beautiful girl, what are you playing?" Zhang Jing shook her head, "I don't know how to do this." The fat old man nodded, "Bad luck, no money to be made."
Zhang Jing looked at the fat old man with sympathy. "If you don't know how to play, it's best not to touch it." Zhang Jing opened her bag and counted her gains. Win or lose, she had chips. After deducting the cost, she had won RMB. Just thinking about it made her happy, and she prepared to exchange it for Hong Kong dollars to take home.
The old lady came over and gave Zhang Jing 200 chips. She said she had won and would give Zhang Jing 100 yuan, and the other 100 yuan was Zhang Jing's capital. She also said that she had won another 200 yuan with her own 300 yuan. Now she wanted to make it clear to Zhang Jing that she should not think she was bullying her.
Zhang Jing didn't care, saying she was leaving too, and would just exchange her chips and leave. After the old lady found out Zhang Jing had won, she breathed a sigh of relief and said, "Winning is better than losing. Go home early." Zhang Jing was relieved after she learned that the pass wouldn't exceed her cash.
The money exchange was quick, the clattering of the cash counter pleasant. Zhang Jing carefully tucked the money into her bag, glancing around cautiously. Seeing nothing unusual, she felt relieved. A man passed by, holding a slot machine ticket. A quick glance revealed a high number on it.
Zhang Jing admires him very much, there is always someone better than you!
It was very boring to wait in line for the bus. I heard a noise in front. It was the two old people and their families who were fighting over the cakes.
"Since there are four of us applying for the card, they should be given four. If there are no cookies and we were given umbrellas, then we all want umbrellas, so they should give us a replacement! After all, we are a family."
"Why not just give the cookies to someone else? You're so stubborn and so stubborn!"
"Fortunately, they were afraid that we would quarrel, so they changed it in the end."
"If you ask me, I'd even take two. They're made in Macau, after all, and I'd be proud to give them to others when I get home!"
"You're just talking after the fact. Why didn't you say it earlier?"
"How about we go find them and change it back?"
"Oh my god, can we please calm down and get in the car? The kids are sleepy."
Zhang Jing and the people around her watched the show in silence. Besides being mentally exhausted, they just wondered how this family could have so much energy.
The car sped along, quickly arriving at the border crossing. After getting off, Zhang Jing immediately called Zhang Zhi to inquire about the exchange rate between RMB and Hong Kong dollars. Zhang Zhi had previously consulted her husband after winning money, and he'd told her it was more cost-effective to exchange the Hong Kong dollars for RMB upon returning to Hong Kong. Therefore, she urged Zhang Jing to avoid exchanging currencies at the border crossing whenever possible.
Zhang Jing was aware of this situation, but bringing the money back to Huizhou, passing it through Zhang Zhi to her husband, and then exchanging it for RMB would take time and would undoubtedly reduce its value. Zhang Jing planned to exchange it directly. She converted all her Hong Kong dollars into RMB, and after adding the money she already had, she only had a little over 2 yuan. It wasn't over yuan, so Zhang Jing still went to a specialty store to buy some beef jerky to take back. The price was a pain in the ass. Although peach cakes were a bit cheaper, Zhang Jing disliked them; she didn't like them.
They were in and out just like that, but Zhang Jing noticed the money laundering Zhang Zhi had mentioned. So she deliberately asked the cashier, "What's the fee for transferring money to a domestic account?" The cashier said, "50 yuan per transaction, with an additional fee for amounts over 50 yuan." Zhang Jing deliberately refused, but the cashier said, "Our fees are very fair. If you don't believe me, go ask around at all the stores; they're all the same!"
Zhang Jing then asked around, and sure enough, it was true. One man even followed her out, saying, "You're asking so many questions, are you kidding us?" Zhang Jing deliberately said, "My friend and I came here together and won tens of thousands. We're thinking about whether it's more cost-effective to wire it over or to bring it in separately. Let's talk it over and decide." The man waited until Zhang Jing spoke to the two girls before leaving.
Zhang Jing pretended her phone was out of battery and asked the time. She chatted with the two girls and, seeing the man wasn't paying attention, decided to leave the customs as soon as possible. She had cash on her, so safety was her priority.
After passing through customs, Zhang Jing felt irritated by the bustling crowd. She found an open area and called A-Long. As soon as A-Long answered, he launched into a barrage of scolding. However, upon learning that Zhang Jing was in Macau and had won over 14,000 yuan, his temper instantly calmed. He asked Zhang Jing if she had eaten and when she expected to return. He also urged her to be careful and promised to personally meet her at the station.
Zhang Jing responded that she had already passed customs but had not yet left Zhuhai, and would return after dinner. She told A-Long not to pick her up, fearing it would be too late, and that she could discuss matters tomorrow. However, A-Long remained uneasy, expressing his concern and demanding that Zhang Jing call him upon arrival.
Zhang Jing hung up the phone and immediately went downstairs to buy her return ticket. The bus was still 40 minutes away from departure. She quickly rushed upstairs again, found a fast-food restaurant, and ordered a chicken drumstick with rice and a drink. When she was almost done, she went to the bathroom to clean up and fill her bottle with some water. She was worried about coughing from the low air conditioning on the bus, so she needed some water to calm her cough.
Only when the car started moving did Zhang Jing relax. No one was following her, and the money in her bag was safe. She would never come to Macau again; it was too stressful. Money here was so hard to come by! It seemed like there was no such thing as easy money. Even the old landlord said, "How can you earn such wealth without hard work?"
Zhang Jing covered herself with her shawl and went back to sleep, planning to wait until the destination. She felt very tired, and seeing that everyone on the bus was exhausted and catching up on their sleep, she felt relieved.
"Anyone need to go to the bathroom? We're at the gas station, so let's just leave." The driver's shout startled everyone awake, and they all got out to go to the restroom. Zhang Jing didn't want to move, so she continued to sleep. The car quickly started again, and Zhang Jing gradually woke up. Checking the time, we were almost at the station, so we decided to find a restaurant to eat.
When Zhang Jing saw A Long, she knew her plan was ruined. A Long was waiting at the station. As soon as Zhang Jing got off the train, he came over and considerately handed her a wet tissue. "Are you tired? Wipe your hands and face. Let's go eat first. What do you want to eat?"
Zhang Jing said she wanted to rest early, as she was exhausted from the car ride. A-Long suggested eating first, and after discussing it, they decided to take a different bus to their usual restaurant. A-Long ordered a few dishes, but Zhang Jing asked him to order less, fearing he wouldn't be able to finish them. "You've worked so hard, let me give you some tonic," A-Long said, and told Zhang Jing to order whatever she wanted.
Zhang Jing didn't hesitate this time and ordered a large bowl of tomato cat ear noodles, a serving of pork and cabbage dumplings, and a plate of cold noodles with cucumber. Returning to her seat, she saw A-Long's orders coming in one after another. Zhang Jing asked A-Long, "Are you sure you can finish it?"
On the table lay five large dishes: braised pig's feet, bitter melon scrambled eggs, and chicken feet. Zhang Jing stared blankly. "There's two of us eating this, and you're one too? Come on!" He said, then placed a piece of pork trotter in Zhang Jing's bowl, making her nauseous. "I don't want this, you take it," Zhang Jing exclaimed. "Okay, okay, if you don't want it, I'll have it," she watched as A-Long took the food and then gave her some vegetables. "Then you can have this, right?"
Zhang Jing ate her vegetables while watching A-Long devour them. "Didn't you eat dinner?" she asked A-Long. "I just had something simple." As Zhang Jing's order was served, A-Long followed suit, muttering, "It tastes pretty good. Why didn't I order it before?"
Zhang Jing thought to herself, "I used to be so conscious of my image, but now I don't want to pretend anymore." The cold noodles weren't sour, so she added a generous amount of vinegar. A-Long said, "Everyone's watching, so use less." Zhang Jing replied, "It's on the table for customers to add, so why should I be embarrassed?" She added two more spoonfuls of chili peppers, mixed it again, tasted it, and added a generous amount of vinegar. After mixing it again and tasting it, she finally nodded in approval, "It's fine."
A-Long kept yelling at her, "Enough, enough! It's too sour and I can't eat it! You added chili peppers? People will come to you later." Zhang Jing rolled her eyes at him and said, "Then let them come to me! Now shut up and eat."
A-Long smiled as he ate a lot, including the hot and sour cold noodles and cat-ear noodles, as well as quite a few dumplings. Zhang Jing saw that he had finished the meat and exclaimed, "You eat so much and you're still so thin. Where did all the fat go?" A-Long asked, "Check out," chewing on a toothpick as he said, "I'm the type of person who can eat anything without gaining weight. I don't put on any weight, no matter how much I eat."
The bill came to over 10 yuan, leaving A-Long distressed. "I didn't expect you to eat so much!" Zhang Jing grabbed the bill and calculated, "My cat ear noodles were 12 yuan, the cold cucumber noodles were 16 yuan, and the dumplings were 38 yuan, a total of only 25 yuan. The rest was all yours! Your meal alone cost over yuan, and you said fast food at work is over yuan. What woman can support you? No wonder you always say you don't have much saved. With your behavior, it's hard for you to have money!"
