The War of Resistance: My Expedition, My Country
Chapter 57: A Camelback Trip
The Hump Route was an international air transport route jointly developed by China and the United States from May 1942 to September 5 during World War II. It flew from Tingjiang in Assam, northeastern India, over the mountains and ridges on the China-Myanmar-India border to Kunming, Yunnan, Chongqing, Sichuan and other places in China.
In May 1942, the Japanese army cut off China's last land transportation line, the Burma Road. China and the United States were forced to open the "Hump Route" to supply materials for China's War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression and the United States in the Asian battlefield.
The opening of the Hump Route thwarted the Japanese army's attempt to invade and blockade China, effectively supporting China's vast wartime battlefields and playing a crucial role in stabilizing the Asian battlefield. The Hump Route is considered the world's most arduous and tragic wartime air transport operation. Over 600 transport aircraft operated on the Hump Route almost around the clock, transporting approximately 65 tons of supplies from India to China via the Hump. This supply included weapons and ammunition, medicine and medical equipment, fuel lines, machinery and equipment, food, clothing, and other military supplies.
At its peak, air transport volume reached tons per month. Assuming a transport aircraft could carry five tons each time, an average of over 5 aircraft entered China via this route daily. To fully utilize this capacity and avoid empty cabins, a large number of young and junior officers from China boarded return flights to India for training and re-equipment. Many veterans of the expeditionary force had experience flying the Hump Route. The Hump Route was the longest, largest, and most arduous air transport route of World War II.
Du Yiping, a 17-year-old from Hejiang, Luzhou, Sichuan, had just graduated from high school and was preparing to take the entrance exam for Chengdu National University. Unable to resist the enthusiastic persuasion of his classmates, he signed up for the "One Million Youth Army" without his parents' knowledge. At that time, completing high school was considered educated youth, and his education earned him the attention of the army. He was assigned as a clerk in the new recruit company and was dispatched to India with the company, soon to join the Indian Army.
At that moment, he was flying over the Hump Route with his company headquarters and the first platoon of new recruits. The plane was rocked by the turbulence, causing severe turbulence. Some on board were pale, and some were even praying, begging for protection from deities like Buddha and Guanyin. Rumors had been circulating even before they boarded the plane, claiming that a certain plane bound for India had crashed, killing dozens of people aboard, leaving no trace.
Du Yiping, a recent graduate, didn't believe in the so-called gods, but the violent turbulence of the plane at that moment was truly terrifying, and Du Yiping was no exception. He was afraid that the plane would accidentally crash and he would die before his ambitions were fulfilled. Like everyone else, Du Yiping's face turned pale and cold sweats streamed down his face as the plane lurched.
In the cockpit, Captain Locke was secretly trembling in his heart. "Damn, you won't be so unlucky, will you? Damn, I won't be so unlucky, will I?" His second-in-command, Lieutenant Ross, kept reminding him, "Captain, the airflow is too strong, there's not enough oxygen outside, and the engine power is decreasing!"
Captain Locke's forehead was covered in sweat. He gripped the joystick tightly with both hands, his eyes fixed on the instrument panel ahead. He silently prayed that the plane would be safe. However, the plane continued to jostle in the strong air currents, like a giant beast out of control.
Lieutenant Ross, the deputy, became more anxious: "Captain, we must leave this airspace as soon as possible, otherwise the plane may crash!"
Captain Locke gritted his teeth and said, "I know, but we must hold on! We must fly through this airspace!"
At that moment, the plane suddenly jolted, and screams echoed from the cabin. Du Yiping clutched the armrest of his seat tightly, wondering: Is this really the end of me? His heart was filled with fear and anxiety.
But Captain Locke, with his rich experience and extraordinary courage, gripped the joystick tightly and tried to stabilize the plane. He shouted, "Everyone, fasten your seat belts and don't panic!"
"Ross, increase the horsepower of the right engine and keep the balance! Ross, increase the horsepower of the right engine and keep the balance!"
"Ross, pay attention to the height, a small amount of let go of the left deceleration pade, and open the left wing to decelerate."
"Keep balanced, speed up... slow down... pull up... altitude 8000... raise the left wing... that's it! Good! Very good! Keep balanced..."
Locke operated the aircraft while constantly giving orders to his co-pilot based on the instrument readings. As the two became more proficient in their coordination, the plane, though still bumpy, gradually stabilized, no longer experiencing drastic fluctuations. Slowly, the plane finally broke through the air layer, and a round of sunlight shone on the fuselage, casting a golden halo on the aircraft!
Locke and Ross finally breathed a sigh of relief as the plane gradually regained its stability. "Good job, Ross!" Locke, not forgetting to encourage his teammate once again, also gave himself a deeper evaluation in his heart!
"Gentlemen, I encountered a small problem with the plane just now, and now it has been solved. I wish you all a happy journey! Gentlemen, I encountered a small problem with the plane just now, and now it has been solved. I wish you all a happy journey!
Locke humorously used the radio to comfort everyone. Everyone on board breathed a sigh of relief, and Du Yiping realized that he and the others on board had undoubtedly experienced a life-or-death experience. He secretly thanked the captains for their impulsive handling of the situation and averting danger. In his heart, he told himself: Since God didn't let me die like this, then I should live well. Thinking of the innocent people who died in the country, especially experiencing the Japanese bombing of his hometown firsthand, and recalling the tragic deaths of his fellow countrymen, Du Yiping secretly vowed to kill more Japanese in future battles, avenge his fellow countrymen, and avenge the deaths of his fellow countrymen!
The road to war is fraught with danger and challenges. He knows that only by facing them bravely can he overcome difficulties and realize his ideals. A strong sense of mission wells up in Du Yiping's heart. He understands that his responsibility is not only for his personal honor and dreams, but also for the interests of the country and its people. He resolves to devote himself even more resolutely to the war in the coming battles, and to fight for freedom and justice at all costs.
