Years turn into wind
Chapter 9 The Sudden War
The atmosphere in the camp suddenly grew tense, with soldiers running back and forth, preparing various supplies and equipment. Cheng Yuwei stood in front of the tent, nervously watching Ling Xiaotian, her mind still resonating with his brief, cold warning: "Something's wrong." She felt a vague sense of unease, as if the calm before the storm was about to be shattered.
"What exactly happened?" Cheng Yuwei couldn't help but take a step forward, her tone filled with anxiety.
Ling Xiaotian glanced at her, his expression as stern as steel. "The enemy has broken through our defenses, arriving much faster than expected. Their supply lines have been reinforced, and they may have obtained our intelligence through covert channels. We must act immediately."
Cheng Yuwei's heart sank. Although she wasn't a military expert, she understood that the strengthening of the supply lines meant the enemy would have sufficient resources and strength to launch a stronger offensive. The threat of intelligence leaks further unnerved her. She couldn't help but think of Lin Yuzhu's words. Those hidden threats seemed to be closing in on her.
"What can I do?" Cheng Yuwei asked anxiously. She knew that she could not directly participate in the battle, but she hoped to share Ling Xiaotian's worries with her knowledge and skills.
Ling Xiaotian's eyes were deep, but he didn't refuse her. He pondered for a moment and said, "The key now is to quickly respond to the enemy's attack and rebuild our defenses before they completely break through. I need you to continue improving those chemical weapons, especially the defensive chemical you proposed earlier that can cover a large area. We may soon need to use it on the front lines."
Cheng Yuwei nodded. Although she was filled with worry, she knew she had no time to hesitate. She quickly returned to the lab and began preparing the necessary materials. Time was running out, and every minute and every second was crucial.
After Ling Xiaotian left, the entire camp fell into a state of intense combat readiness. The clatter of soldiers' footsteps, the commander's commands, and the faint sound of artillery fire in the distance intertwined, creating a chaotic and oppressive atmosphere.
Cheng Yuwei buried her head in front of her workbench, her hands moving faster and faster, but her heartbeat also kept accelerating. She knew that war was approaching, and this time, victory or defeat would not only determine Ling Xiaotian's future, but also her own survival in this chaotic world.
Just as she was concentrating on preparing the chemicals, she heard hurried footsteps outside the door. Cheng Yuwei looked up and saw Ling Xiaotian's adjutant hurried in with a nervous look on his face.
"Ms. Cheng, the Marshal asked you to take all the formulas and research results with you and go to the front line with me immediately." The adjutant said as he looked around the laboratory, as if checking whether she was ready.
"Go to the front line?" Cheng Yuwei was stunned. She didn't expect Ling Xiaotian to ask her to go to the battlefield in person.
The adjutant nodded, his tone firm. "The situation is urgent. The Marshal believes that only with your personal presence can the strategy for the use of chemical weapons be adjusted in a timely manner based on the actual situation."
Cheng Yuwei didn't ask any more questions. She quickly packed up the necessary supplies and documents and followed her adjutant out of the laboratory. Along the way, her heart grew heavier. The sound of artillery fire from the front gradually became clearer, and the faint glow of flames illuminated the distant sky.
When they arrived at the front, Cheng Yuwei's heart tightened at the sight. The trenches were filled with soldiers, the sound of gunfire and artillery fire intertwined, smoke filled the battlefield, and the air was filled with a suffocating smell of anxiety. Cheng Yuwei had never been so close to the cruelty of war, and for a moment she was shocked, but she knew she had no right to retreat.
Ling Xiaotian stood in front of the command post, discussing the battle situation intensely with a staff officer. Seeing Cheng Yuwei approach, his expression softened slightly, and he immediately motioned for her to come over.
"Wei'er, our defense line is already in jeopardy, and the enemy is trying to break through the flank. If we don't turn the situation around quickly, the entire defense line will collapse." Ling Xiaotian's voice was steady and powerful, but Cheng Yuwei heard a rare sense of urgency in his tone.
Cheng Yuwei nodded, quickly checked the chemical weapons and defensive equipment she had brought, and then said, "I can deploy a new type of chemical smoke ahead. It can restrict the enemy's movements for a certain period of time, giving us a chance to counterattack. But its effectiveness is limited, so we must quickly adjust our offensive strategy."
Ling Xiaotian's eyes instantly became sharp, and he gave the order without hesitation: "Deploy your plan immediately."
Cheng Yuwei, accompanied by several soldiers, quickly headed towards the trenches. Her heart nearly leaped into her throat, and she clutched the bottles and cans tightly in her hands, feeling every step like walking on the edge of a knife. She knew she shouldered a huge responsibility; if she failed, not only her but the entire defense line could collapse in an instant.
By the time they reached the front line, the enemy's attack had intensified. Cheng Yuwei, ignoring her fear, immediately began deploying chemical smoke devices at several key locations. Her hands were swift and steady, without pause. The smoke quickly began to rise, covering a large area, obstructing the enemy's vision and significantly slowing their advance.
"It's done!" She breathed a sigh of relief.
But at this moment, a loud bang suddenly came from the distance. A shell landed accurately not far away. The explosion was deafening and the ground shook violently. Before Cheng Yuwei could react, a shockwave knocked her to the ground. Her ears were buzzing, and it seemed as if the whole world had become blurry in an instant.
Her vision gradually blurred, and she could vaguely hear the shouts and footsteps of soldiers. Ling Xiaotian's figure seemed to appear before her, but she could no longer see clearly.
"Weier!" Ling Xiaotian's voice came in the chaos, full of anxiety and worry.
Cheng Yuwei tried hard to respond, but her body was no longer under her control. The scene before her eyes became darker and darker, and finally fell into darkness.
