Chapter 68: Shadow Reappears
Liu Jingyao's disappearance was like a buried bomb, causing the atmosphere in the Marshal's Mansion to suddenly become tense. Although "Operation Jackdaw" had been dismantled, Liu Jingyao's existence was like a sword hanging over their heads, ready to fall at any time.
Ling Xiaotian and Cheng Yuwei began to pay closer attention to the city's movements. However, after a few days, Liu Jingyao seemed to have vanished into thin air, leaving no trace. Just when they thought they were safe for the time being, a mysterious letter quietly arrived at Cheng Yuwei's pharmacy.
There was no signature on the envelope, only a line of vigorous handwriting: "Dr. Yu, don't forget the victims of Chaoyang City." Cheng Yuwei looked at these words and felt a chill in her heart. She almost immediately thought of Liu Jingyao's provocation.
After reading the letter, Ling Xiaotian's expression turned cold and he whispered, "This is a threat to shake your resolve."
Cheng Yuwei calmly put the letter away, a look of determination flashing in her eyes: "She wants me to back down, but I won't do what she wants. Since she wants to use the sacrifice as an excuse to shake me, then I will let her see with her own eyes our determination to protect this city."
The next day, Ling Xiaotian led his soldiers to reinforce Chaoyang City's defenses and dispatched secret guards to intensify the search for Liu Jingyao. However, she seemed to have been well prepared, leaving no trace, and even several of her trusted subordinates disappeared without a trace.
Cheng Yuwei continued her medical practice day after day, caring for injured civilians and soldiers. Her resilience gradually restored the confidence of the city's residents, who in particular held her in high regard. Just when she thought everything was improving, a wounded soldier quietly arrived at the pharmacy and whispered a piece of news.
"Doctor Yu, there's been a mysterious group of troops operating outside the city lately, their movements are cryptic. Some have seen Liu Jingyao leading them, but their specific intentions are unclear."
Cheng Yuwei frowned slightly, a vague suspicion forming in her mind. Perhaps Liu Jingyao's visit was intended to disrupt their defenses, or perhaps even to secretly plot a new operation. So, she immediately reported the news to Ling Xiaotian, and the two decided to send an elite force to investigate.
Late at night, Ling Xiaotian personally led a reconnaissance team to a secret stronghold outside the city, attempting to ascertain the enemy's details. Amidst the mountain forest, darkness swallowed all sounds. Ling Xiaotian's team advanced silently, seemingly blending into the night.
They bypassed several sentries and gradually approached the enemy camp. Ling Xiaotian crouched on a hill, gazing into the distance in the dim moonlight. He saw a group of soldiers lined up in neat formation, clearly having undergone rigorous training. Liu Jingyao stood at the front of the group, whispering instructions.
Ling Xiaotian's heart sank. Although the team in front of him was not large in number, they seemed to be quite powerful. If they launched a surprise attack in the city, the consequences would be disastrous.
He took a deep breath, signaled the team to retreat, and quietly returned to the city to bring this information back to the Marshal's Mansion. Cheng Yuwei listened with a serious expression: "Her purpose is unclear, but she is waiting for the right moment, perhaps to attack when we let our guard down."
Ling Xiaotian nodded: "It seems that we have to set a trap for her. Since she wants to attack the city, let her return empty-handed."
A few days later, the defenses outside Chaoyang City were further strengthened. Ling Xiaotian deliberately spread false information, suggesting that the main force in the city would be transferred to other areas for support. Meanwhile, Cheng Yuwei was preparing special potions for the soldiers in the pharmacy, just in case.
However, as night fell, urgent news arrived from the city—Liu Jingyao's troops had indeed taken advantage of the darkness to attack Chaoyang City's north gate. Ling Xiaotian and Cheng Yuwei had anticipated this and, with their troops, set up a tight, defensive formation.
At the city gate, Liu Jingyao, dressed in black, held a murderous gaze. Like a sharp blade, she led the troops, charging swiftly towards the north gate. However, she hadn't anticipated the city walls being filled with ambushes.
At Ling Xiaotian's command, the ambushing soldiers rushed out and surrounded Liu Jingyao's team. Cheng Yuwei stood beside Ling Xiaotian, staring coldly at Liu Jingyao's figure. Her voice was filled with determination: "Liu Jingyao, your conspiracy ends here."
Liu Jingyao was slightly startled, then sneered: "Cheng Yuwei, it really is you! Aren't you afraid that you will also fall into the abyss of this war?"
Cheng Yuwei's eyes were firm and she did not back down: "As long as it is to protect innocent people, I will never regret it." Her words were powerful, boosting the morale of the surrounding soldiers.
In the fierce battle, Liu Jingyao was gradually forced into a desperate situation. However, she did not show any fear. Instead, she smiled coldly, with a hint of cruelty in her eyes: "Cheng Yuwei, do you think you have won? This is just the beginning."
Before she finished her words, one of her trusted followers suddenly pulled out a signal arrow and fired it into the night sky. Flames shot up into the sky, and Liu Jingyao's reinforcements quietly appeared on the other side, attempting to take advantage of the chaos and attack the city.
Ling Xiaotian's troops quickly adjusted their formation and intercepted Liu Jingyao's reinforcements one by one. The battle continued until dawn, and finally, Liu Jingyao's troops were completely defeated, and Ling Xiaotian took all the remaining troops into custody on the spot.
As the first rays of dawn shone through, Cheng Yuwei looked at the mess on the ground, feeling a mixture of emotions. She knew that this battle was only a temporary victory, and that Liu Jingyao's appearance was no accident; there might be a bigger conspiracy behind it.
Ling Xiaotian walked to her side, gently held her hand, and said softly: "Yuwei, we won."
Cheng Yuwei smiled slightly and nodded, "Yes, we won. But the future is still long, and we need to keep going."
The two smiled at each other, their eyes full of determination. However, just as they were relaxing, an uninvited guest quietly sneaked into the city, secretly spying on their movements, seemingly planning a new conspiracy.
