Years turn into wind

Chapter 43: Storm and Darkness

Lu Sheng's escape made Ling Xiaotian and Cheng Yuwei realize that this battle was far from over. The sky in the northwest remained gloomy. Although Lu Sheng's army had suffered heavy losses, he still had the ability to make a comeback.

"We must plan as soon as possible and not give Lu Sheng any chance to breathe." Ling Xiaotian stood in front of the map, pointing to the northwest, his eyes full of coldness.

Cheng Yuwei nodded, her eyes filled with calmness and determination. "Lu Sheng might unite with the warlords in the northwest to cause us even greater trouble. If we can find his allies and weaken his power, we might be able to thwart his plans in advance."

Ling Xiaotian pondered for a moment and said, "You are right. I will send more spies to investigate the movements of forces in the northwest region. However, Yuwei, your safety in the Marshal's Mansion is particularly important. You must be cautious."

Cheng Yuwei smiled and patted Ling Xiaotian's hand soothingly: "Xiaotian, I'm relieved with your arrangements. Besides, I don't want to be a drag when you're worried about me."

A few days later, spies reported back that Lu Sheng had indeed begun contacting warlords in the northwest, attempting to unite them against Ling Xiaotian's forces. Cheng Yuwei analyzed the intelligence and proposed countermeasures. She suggested that Ling Xiaotian divide his forces to deter the northwest, while also proactively lobbying other warlords to prevent them from being wooed by Lu Sheng.

Ling Xiaotian nodded in agreement and quickly dispatched his trusted aides to the northwest region to negotiate with several leaders of the waiting factions. Cheng Yuwei continued to deploy defenses in the rear, strengthening internal security to guard against possible infiltrating enemy spies.

At this moment, an anonymous letter suddenly appeared at the door of the Marshal's Mansion. The letter was brief and sharp: "Cheng Yuwei, Lu Sheng has never forgotten you. If you don't want him to seek revenge, it's best to leave Ling Xiaotian's side."

This letter made Cheng Yuwei fall into deep thought. She knew that this was a threat from Lu Sheng, but at the same time she also realized that it was his bluff, intended to shake her confidence.

After reading the letter, Ling Xiaotian clenched his fists in anger, his eyes filled with anger: "Lu Sheng, this despicable villain, actually tried to threaten you with this method."

Cheng Yuwei patted his shoulder and chuckled, saying, "He's at the end of his rope. As long as we hold on to our beliefs and don't give him any chances, he won't be able to stir up any trouble."

Late at night, Cheng Yuwei stood by the window, gazing at the distant night sky. In the northwest sky, clouds surged like waves, seeming to foreshadow an approaching storm. A complex mix of emotions welled up in her heart: since traveling to this era, she had experienced hardships she had never imagined, but she had also experienced emotions she had never experienced before.

Ling Xiaotian walked behind her, gently held her in his arms, and said softly: "Yuwei, no matter how insidious Lu Sheng is, I will protect you."

Cheng Yuwei's heart moved slightly, feeling his warmth, she slowly turned around and stared into his eyes: "Xiaotian, I am willing to face any storm with you. This is the decision I will never regret since traveling to this era."

Ling Xiaotian lowered his head and gently kissed her forehead, his eyes affectionate and firm: "With you here, I'm not afraid of anything."

The two embraced each other in the night, their hearts becoming more determined. Meanwhile, Lu Sheng's power was quietly gathering in the dark, waiting for the right moment to strike back.

The next morning, spies reported back that Lu Sheng had secretly assembled an army and was preparing to launch a surprise attack on Ling Xiaotian. Cheng Yuwei immediately informed Ling Xiaotian of this news, and the two of them acted decisively, deciding to strike early and thwart Lu Sheng's plan.

"We can't let him have any chance to breathe. This time we must completely destroy his power." Ling Xiaotian said coldly, his eyes full of murderous intent.

Cheng Yuwei nodded, quickly arranged his armor, and said firmly: "Xiaotian, I will support you from the rear and make sure you have no worries."

Ling Xiaotian smiled slightly and held her hand: "Don't worry, I will definitely return with victory."

A few days later, Ling Xiaotian led his troops in a surprise attack on Lu Sheng's camp, catching him off guard. This precise and swift attack inflicted heavy losses on Lu Sheng's troops, forcing them to retreat in panic. Ling Xiaotian's troops pursued the enemy, completely dispersing them and cutting off Lu Sheng's retreat.

After the battle, Ling Xiaotian led his troops back in triumph. Cheng Yuwei had already been waiting at the gate of the mansion. Seeing that he was safe and sound, she finally put her mind at ease.

Ling Xiaotian got off his horse and walked straight to her, smiling: "Yuwei, I'm back."

Cheng Yuwei pursed her lips and smiled, then said softly, "Thank you for your hard work, Xiaotian."

The two smiled at each other, their eyes filled with unconcealable emotion. After this storm, their feelings became even stronger, and each other's companionship became an indispensable support.

At night, Cheng Yuwei and Ling Xiaotian continued to discuss post-war matters in the study. Suddenly, a cold voice came from outside the window: "You two are indeed deeply in love, but I wonder if you can remain so calm in front of me?"

The two of them looked up suddenly and saw a dark figure standing outside the window. It was Lu Sheng. His eyes were full of resentment, and he was obviously still brooding over his previous failure.

Ling Xiaotian's face darkened, and he said in a cold voice, "Lu Sheng, you dare to trespass into the Marshal's Mansion. You are really courting death."

Lu Sheng sneered, staring at Cheng Yuwei intently: "Cheng Yuwei, today I will let you see with your own eyes that Ling Xiaotian will be destroyed because of you!"

As soon as he finished speaking, several assassins surrounded him from all directions, clearly ambushed in the mansion. Cheng Yuwei pulled Ling Xiaotian back a step and quickly and calmly analyzed the situation, "Xiaotian, Lu Sheng is well prepared this time. We must break out as soon as possible."

Ling Xiaotian nodded, and the two of them fought side by side in tacit understanding, quickly repelling Lu Sheng's assassins. Although the enemy was fierce, the assassins were defeated one after another under their joint counterattack.

Seeing this, Lu Sheng's face turned pale and he gnashed his teeth in anger: "Don't be complacent. You can escape today, but one day, I will make you pay the price!"

With that, Lu Sheng fled in panic with his remaining men. Cheng Yuwei watched him disappear with a sense of alarm in her heart: "Lu Sheng has reached the end of his rope, but this will only drive him even crazier. We must be fully prepared to prevent any counterattack from him."

Ling Xiaotian nodded, his eyes firm: "Yuwei, no matter what storm lies ahead, we will face it together."

Cheng Yuwei smiled slightly and gently held his hand. The two stood leaning against each other, both holding firm beliefs in their hearts.

And now, deep in the darkness, the clouds gradually dissipated, and the stars filled the earth. After experiencing this life-and-death test, their emotions had become as bright as the stars in the night sky, unshaken by wind and rain.
