Years turn into wind
Chapter 241: Rebirth from adversity
A stream stretched through the forest, its water carrying a cool, refreshing breeze. Cheng Yuwei led Zhang Qiang and Li Chao through the dense forest with difficulty. The sky gradually darkened, with only scattered moonlight filtering through the leaves, casting a silver glow.
"Sister-in-law, how long will it take to reach the rendezvous point?" Zhang Qiang asked, wiping the sweat from his forehead. His voice was filled with fatigue, but more so with nervousness about the unknown.
Cheng Yuwei glanced back at him and lowered her voice slightly: "Hold on a little longer, this forest isn't very big, we'll be able to get through it soon. When the time comes, as long as we can contact A Gu's troops, we'll be safe."
Li Chao panted heavily, but joked: "Sister-in-law, your body is stronger than both of us men. We are almost exhausted, but you are still like nothing happened."
Cheng Yuwei didn't answer, only quickening her pace. She knew full well that her composure was forced. The exhaustion and the tension in her heart had already left her breathless, but she knew she couldn't fall. This wasn't just about her own safety, it was about everyone else's life.
Ambush in the woods
Suddenly, there was a faint sound of footsteps in the distance. Cheng Yuwei immediately stopped and raised her hand to signal Zhang Qiang and Li Chao behind her to squat down and hide.
"Something's happening." She whispered, her eyes fixed on the front.
Zhang Qiang quickly pulled out his gun, loaded it, and whispered, "Are the enemies catching up?"
"Not sure." Cheng Yuwei shook her head, then listened carefully for a while and found that the footsteps were irregular and did not seem like the enemy was conducting a large-scale search.
She lowered her voice and said, "I'll go over and take a look. You stay where you are and provide cover."
"No, sister-in-law, it's too dangerous!" Zhang Qiang hurriedly stopped her, but Cheng Yuwei had already crouched down and moved silently towards the direction where the sound came from.
Her movements were swift and light, making almost no sound. Deep in the woods, a lone figure was moving slowly. He looked less like a soldier and more like an ordinary villager.
Cheng Yuwei frowned, still keeping the gun in her hand alert, and whispered: "Don't move, who are you?"
The man was obviously startled, and the stick in his hand dropped to the ground with a "crack". He immediately raised his hands and said tremblingly, "Don't shoot! I'm a hunter from the village, out to collect things, I mean no harm!"
Cheng Yuwei examined him for a few seconds, and after confirming that he was unarmed, she lowered her gun slightly, but remained vigilant: "This forest is very dangerous now, leave quickly."
The hunter nodded and said tremblingly, "There are several small paths on the edge of the forest that can avoid the main road. If you want to go, you can go around from the southeast. It's safer there."
After hearing this, Cheng Yuwei whispered, "Thank you." She immediately turned around and took Zhang Qiang and Li Chao in the direction indicated by the hunter.
Reception is imminent
As they drew closer to the rendezvous point, the tension among the three men gradually eased. As the hunter had predicted, the southeastern section of the forest was relatively flat, and they encountered no enemy patrols.
Suddenly, a clear bird song was heard in the distance. A glimmer of light flashed in Cheng Yuwei's eyes, and she immediately whispered to the two people behind her: "It's A Gu's people!"
She quickly whistled in the direction of the sound, and a moment later, several familiar figures appeared in the woods.
"Sister-in-law! You're finally here!" Ah Gu came up quickly, his face full of excitement. Behind him followed several fully armed soldiers, who had obviously been prepared to meet her.
Cheng Yuwei finally breathed a sigh of relief and nodded: "There was a problem on the way, but fortunately we arrived safely."
"Hurry, follow us, the captain is waiting for you in the camp ahead." A Gu said as he called on the soldiers to escort them away.
A brief respite
After arriving at the camp, Cheng Yuwei finally had a chance to rest. She sat by the fire, watching Zhang Qiang and Li Chao wolf down their rations, but she herself had no appetite.
"Sister-in-law, don't you want to eat something?" Zhang Qiang asked with concern.
Cheng Yuwei shook her head and said softly, "You guys eat, I'll think about the next plan."
Li Chao couldn't help but say, "Sister-in-law, we're all here now. Shouldn't it be time to hand it over to the captain and the others? You can finally take a break, right?"
Cheng Yuwei smiled bitterly: "Captain, the power of the others is limited, and the enemy's actions are becoming more and more crazy. I can't take it lightly."
Her gaze fell on the night sky outside the camp, and she secretly swore in her heart that no matter how difficult the future would be, she must protect these people who followed her through life and death, and protect their common hope.
