Years turn into wind

Chapter 24 Temporary Peace and Warmth

Ling Xiaotian spent several days intensively deploying defenses, arranging for his men to conduct a thorough search of the Marshal's residence, searching for hidden enemy spies. Although the enemy forces were temporarily disrupted, they knew full well that the true crisis was not over.

The atmosphere in the Marshal's Mansion remained tense. After a brief rest, the soldiers prepared for the next battle. Ling Xiaotian and Cheng Yuwei also had a rare moment of peace.

That evening, the afterglow of the setting sun bathed the courtyard of the Marshal's Mansion, its orange-red light filtering through the leaves and illuminating the stone pavement. Cheng Yuwei walked alone in the courtyard, feeling a rare tranquility. Her heart remained heavy, her thoughts still lingering on the espionage case she had just solved.

Just as she was standing under an old tree, lost in thought, a familiar voice came from behind her: "Yuwei, the smoke of war has cleared, and it's time for us to enjoy the rare tranquility."

Cheng Yuwei turned around and saw Ling Xiaotian standing not far away with a rare gentle smile on his face.

"Why are you here?" she was a little surprised.

Ling Xiaotian approached slowly and said with a smile, "You've been busy for so many days, it's time to relax. There's no urgent military business tonight, so I want to take you out for a walk."

Cheng Yuwei was stunned for a moment, then nodded, a smile on her face: "Okay."

The town seemed especially peaceful in the evening. Ling Xiaotian brought Cheng Yuwei to a small lake outside the city. The water shimmered in the setting sun, and a gentle breeze blew across the surface, bringing a slight coolness. The two sat side by side, far away from the flames of war and conspiracy, as if returning to a simpler time.

"It's so beautiful here." Cheng Yuwei looked at the lake and felt calm in her heart.

Ling Xiaotian glanced at her sideways and said calmly, "This lake is where I often visited when I was a child. Back then, I had never imagined that I would one day become a soldier, nor did I expect to shoulder so much responsibility."

Cheng Yuwei listened to his voice and suddenly felt that the man in front of her was not just the cold and majestic warlord. He also had too much pressure and responsibility behind him, and these responsibilities forced him to become strong and cruel.

"Have you ever regretted it?" Cheng Yuwei asked softly.

Ling Xiaotian smiled slightly: "I may have had a little regret at that time, but not now. Especially after meeting you, I have become more determined in my choice." His eyes were affectionate, as if all the troubles in the world had gone away at this moment, and only she was in his world.

Cheng Yuwei's heart stirred, and she lowered her head slightly, feeling an indescribable warmth. She had never imagined that she would meet someone like Ling Xiaotian in such a turbulent era. From the initial hostility between the two to the tacit understanding and affection they now had, she gradually realized that Ling Xiaotian had become an indispensable part of her life.

"I know you have been carrying a heavy responsibility, but I hope that no matter what happens next, I will face it with you." Cheng Yuwei said softly, looking at Ling Xiaotian with a firm gaze.

Ling Xiaotian gently held her hand and whispered, "With you here, I believe everything will be fine."

The two sat quietly by the lake, their hearts filled with an indescribable warmth and tacit understanding. The sunset gradually disappeared below the horizon and night fell quietly, but their hearts were tightly connected at this moment.

However, the warm moments did not last long. In the following days, Ling Xiaotian's troops continued to investigate spies. Although they found several suspicious individuals, there seemed to be a more complex network behind them.

At the same time, Lu Sheng, who was observing secretly, was not idle either.

In a hidden dark room, Lu Sheng listened to his subordinates' report with a gloomy face: "Marshal, several of our spies planted within Ling Xiaotian have been exposed, and some of our plans have been thwarted due to Ling Xiaotian's vigilance."

Lu Sheng sneered, "Ling Xiaotian is indeed quite capable. He's been able to detect our actions several times in advance. However, this game is far from over."

The subordinate asked cautiously: "So what should we do next?"

A cold glint flashed in Lu Sheng's eyes. "No matter how careful he is, he can't guard against everyone. We will give him another 'gift' to plunge him into complete chaos."

A few days later, Ling Xiaotian receives another mysterious letter, which reveals a crucial secret about a high-ranking general in his army: this general appears loyal, but is actually secretly colluding with Lu Sheng, ready to betray Ling Xiaotian at any time.

Ling Xiaotian frowned and looked at the letter coldly, his heart alert. He immediately summoned a few of his most trusted confidants to secretly investigate the contents of the letter.

Cheng Yuwei stood beside him, her expression solemn: "If the contents of the letter are true, then the existence of this general will be our biggest hidden danger."

Ling Xiaotian said in a deep voice, "I never trust any anonymous letters, but this time the clues do seem to be true. We must proceed with caution."

They secretly laid a tight net and deliberately passed some false information to the general in an attempt to lure him out of his hole.

As expected, the general's flaws soon became apparent. He'd thought he was acting in secret, but he hadn't anticipated Ling Xiaotian's trap. Just as he was about to pass on the false information to Lu Sheng, Ling Xiaotian and Cheng Yuwei appeared, completely thwarting his plot.

"You...you already knew it!" The general's face was pale and his voice was filled with despair.

Ling Xiaotian sneered, "Do you think I would easily trust a traitor like you? In my army, there is no room for even a single cancer."

The general knelt on the ground helplessly, knowing that he had no way to escape.

Cheng Yuwei stood aside, watching the scene calmly, feeling a surge of joy in her heart. She knew they had finally uncovered the biggest enemy lurking in the shadows.

Ling Xiaotian exhaled lightly and looked at Cheng Yuwei with a hint of gratitude in his eyes: "Thank goodness for you, otherwise it would have been difficult for me to uncover this conspiracy so quickly."

Cheng Yuwei smiled and shook her head: "This is our common victory."

The two stood side by side again, and after this storm, their relationship became stronger. Although Lu Sheng's conspiracy was temporarily thwarted, a bigger storm may be brewing.

In the distant sky, the dark clouds have not yet dispersed, and the battle between war and conspiracy is far from over.
