Years turn into wind

Chapter 16 Undercurrent surging

After Ling Xiaotian left the room, Cheng Yuwei slowly lay down, still filled with anxiety. Although the battlefield had temporarily subsided, she knew that this tranquility was only the brief peace before the storm.

Ling Xiaotian's enemies were far more than just those on the front lines. She knew full well that behind this turbulent situation, there were deeper undercurrents surging. She had just closed her eyes when her thoughts were interrupted by the sound of hurried footsteps.

"Miss Cheng, there is a guest who wants to see you." The maid knocked on the door gently, her voice cautious.

"Guest?" Cheng Yuwei's heart tightened and she frowned. She had originally thought that no one would come to visit rashly at this sensitive moment. She felt uneasy, but she still asked the maid to lead the guest in.

As the door gently opened, a figure appeared. It was a woman dressed in an elegant cheongsam, with a cold gaze and a powerful aura. She slowly approached, tall and delicate, yet with a hint of unconcealed pride.

"Are you Cheng Yuwei?" The woman's voice was cold, and her eyes lingered on Cheng Yuwei for a moment, with undisguised hostility in them.

Cheng Yuwei suppressed the doubts in her heart and nodded lightly: "I am, I wonder who the young lady is?"

The woman smiled slightly, but that smile was filled with cold mockery: "I am Shen Yirong, Ling Xiaotian's first wife."

Hearing the name, Cheng Yuwei's heart trembled. She had heard of Shen Yirong before, but Ling Xiaotian had never mentioned her. Unexpectedly, this woman actually came to the door in person.

"It's Miss Shen." Cheng Yuwei's face was calm, but her heart was turbulent. Shen Yirong's imposing presence was overwhelming, and it was clear that she was no ordinary person.

Shen Yirong looked at Cheng Yuwei coldly for a moment, her eyes filled with undisguised contempt and jealousy: "I heard that you have a close relationship with Xiaotian and even saved his life. It seems that you are a smart woman who knows how to win a man's favor."

Cheng Yuwei felt a chill in her heart, knowing that Shen Yirong's words were full of thorns, but she did not show any emotion, but responded calmly: "I just did my best to help him."

Shen Yirong sneered, a trace of disdain flashing in her eyes: "Help? Do you really think you can help him in this turbulent era? Don't be naive, the battlefield is not a place for you to interfere."

Her words were like a sharp knife, piercing Cheng Yuwei's heart. She knew she was just an outsider, with no power or past foundation. But she still looked at Shen Yirong calmly, her tone still firm: "I do what I think is right. As for the rest, Miss Shen, don't worry about it."

Shen Yirong's face darkened instantly, and the hostility in her eyes became more obvious: "What a sharp-tongued woman. Cheng Yuwei, I advise you to leave Xiaotian as soon as possible, otherwise you will bear the consequences."

Her tone was cold and threatening. Cheng Yuwei's heartbeat quickened slightly, but she didn't show any weakness. She looked directly into Shen Yirong's eyes without flinching.

Shen Yirong stared at her for a moment, then seeing that Cheng Yuwei showed no fear, she snorted coldly, flicked her sleeves, and turned away. As her back disappeared through the door, Cheng Yuwei's hands unconsciously clenched the bed sheet.

This secret war has just begun.

Meanwhile, Ling Xiaotian was discussing the latest developments on the front lines with his trusted generals. His gaze was calm and sharp, and not a single detail escaped his grasp. However, after the meeting concluded, an uninvited guest suddenly appeared, disrupting his concentration.

"Marshal Ling, long time no see." A familiar voice came from the door. Ling Xiaotian looked up and saw a face he least wanted to see again - his former friend and nemesis, Lu Sheng.

Lu Sheng, dressed in military uniform, appears dusty, but his eyes are sharp and cunning. He was once Ling Xiaotian's close comrade, but due to power struggles, they eventually parted ways. Now he is one of Ling Xiaotian's rivals.

"Lu Sheng, what are you doing here?" Ling Xiaotian's tone was filled with obvious impatience, his eyes narrowed slightly, revealing his vigilance.

Lu Sheng chuckled and walked over slowly: "Don't be so nervous, I'm not here to cause trouble. I just want to remind you of one thing - there is a traitor in your army."

Ling Xiaotian's face instantly darkened. He knew there might be spies among the enemy troops, but hearing Lu Sheng's words still made him feel uneasy.

"Explain yourself clearly." Ling Xiaotian's voice was as cold as ice, and he was obviously very wary of Lu Sheng.

"Tsk tsk, Xiaotian, you're still so impatient." Lu Sheng smiled leisurely, with a hint of joking in his tone, "The traitor I'm talking about is not just an ordinary nobody. He's right next to you, in a high position, and might even know all your plans."

Ling Xiaotian's eyes narrowed suddenly, and countless speculations suddenly arose in his mind. While Lu Sheng's words were hard to trust completely, the warning could not be ignored. Ling Xiaotian vaguely felt that the recent anomalies in the battles might be caused by a traitor.

Seeing Ling Xiaotian lost in thought, Lu Sheng continued, "You should know that in the world of power, there's only a fine line between friends and enemies. I just wanted to remind you. After all, we used to be friends."

Ling Xiaotian looked at him coldly, with a hint of warning in his tone: "I don't need you to remind me. You'd better stay away from my territory, otherwise-"

"Or will you declare war on me?" Lu Sheng raised his eyebrows and chuckled, "Xiaotian, you really haven't changed."

He raised his hand and bowed, then turned and left the conference room, leaving Ling Xiaotian standing there alone, his eyes flashing with deep thought.

Meanwhile, tensions grew within the Marshal's residence. While Cheng Yuwei recuperated from her injuries, she sensed a lurking threat. Shen Yirong's warnings, Lu Sheng's appearance, and the vague intelligence she had gathered made her realize that Ling Xiaotian's situation was more complicated than she had imagined.

When Ling Xiaotian returned to the mansion, he saw Cheng Yuwei sitting by the window, her eyes deep, as if she was thinking about something. He walked closer to her and asked softly, "What are you thinking about?"

Cheng Yuwei came back to her senses and looked up at Ling Xiaotian, a trace of worry flashing in her eyes: "I always feel that something is wrong recently. Shen Yirong came to see me, and her words were full of hostility. Also, I heard some news during the day, it seems that someone wants to harm you."

Ling Xiaotian was slightly stunned, his eyes turned cold: "Shen Yirong came to see you? What did she say to you?"

Cheng Yuwei hesitated for a moment, but still told Ling Xiaotian the truth about Shen Yirong's threat. Ling Xiaotian's face turned ashen. He had always been decisive in dealing with emotional issues, but Shen Yirong was indeed a trouble he had to deal with.

"I'll take care of Shen Yirong's affairs." Ling Xiaotian's voice was low and firm. "As for you, don't worry. I won't let anyone hurt you."

Cheng Yuwei nodded, but her inner anxiety remained. She knew that in Ling Xiaotian's world, emotions and power were always intertwined, and she was just an external variable. Neither Shen Yirong nor those enemies would let her go easily.

"Xiaotian," she suddenly whispered, with a rare hint of tenderness and fragility in her tone, "If one day, we can no longer be together...will you regret knowing me?"

Ling Xiaotian's eyes softened instantly. He walked closer to Cheng Yuwei, gently stroked her cheek, and said in a low and firm voice: "I never regret it."

The two looked at each other...
