Years turn into wind

Chapter 11 Undercurrent

Cheng Yuwei felt the air around her grow increasingly tense, as if even breathing had become difficult. The enemy's artillery fire grew closer, and the adjutant's expression grew increasingly anxious. She knew this wasn't just an ordinary attack, but a long-planned, fatal blow.

She stood in the makeshift command tent, gazing out at the battlefield in the distance. Flames illuminated the sky, and the occasional explosion shook the earth. She had never felt the coldness and cruelty of war so vividly. She suddenly realized that her fate was deeply intertwined with the fate of this war.

"Wei'er!" Ling Xiaotian's voice came from outside, with a hint of urgency and anxiety.

Cheng Yuwei turned and saw Ling Xiaotian approaching with a solemn expression. His armor was stained with dust and blood, clearly having just returned from the front lines. His face wore a hint of fatigue, but his eyes still shone with determination.

"The situation is very bad. The enemy has broken through the flank and our defense line may collapse at any time." Ling Xiaotian said in a low voice, his tone revealing unprecedented seriousness.

Cheng Yuwei clutched the map tightly in her hand, her mind racing. While the chemical smoke she had deployed earlier had slowed the enemy's attack, it was only temporary. Ling Xiaotian's forces were relatively small, and the enemy's reinforcements had already made the situation even more unfavorable.

"How much time do we have left?" she asked in a deep voice, trying to remain calm.

Ling Xiaotian was silent for a moment, his eyes solemn. "Two hours at most. If we don't take action now, I'm afraid we won't be able to hold out until reinforcements arrive."

Cheng Yuwei took a deep breath, her mind racing as she thought about countermeasures. She scanned the map in her hand and suddenly noticed a detail—although the enemy had the advantage in numbers, their supply lines were relatively weak, especially for their transport convoys, which lacked adequate cover along the way.

Her mind worked quickly, analyzing a potential opportunity.

"Ling Xiaotian, if we can destroy their supply lines, the enemy's offensive will quickly weaken." Cheng Yuwei's eyes gradually became firmer, and she continued, "I can create a highly effective incendiary agent and use it directly on their transportation lines to cut off their supply."

Ling Xiaotian frowned slightly, clearly aware of the risks of this plan. He looked at her, a complex emotion flashing in his eyes: "You're still injured, why take another risk?"

Cheng Yuwei shook her head with a determined look: "There is no such thing as a safe place in war, and this is the only thing I can do for you. I will not retreat."

Ling Xiaotian's eyes met hers for a moment, but he didn't try to dissuade her anymore. He just whispered, "Okay, I'll arrange for the most elite troops to escort you. But you must be careful."

The two quickly developed a detailed plan. Cheng Yuwei personally prepared the necessary chemicals. She knew this was not only for Ling Xiaotian's victory, but also for her own chance of survival in this era.

As night fell again, the camp fell silent. Cheng Yuwei, along with a small team of a dozen soldiers, quietly set out, heading towards the enemy's supply line. Everyone remained silent along the way, knowing that this operation depended on the fate of the entire army.

Halfway through the journey, a subtle noise suddenly came from the woods ahead. The leading soldier immediately took a defensive stance, and everyone immediately became alert.

"There is an enemy ambush!" Cheng Yuwei heard a whisper in her ears, and her heart tightened.

Sure enough, the next moment, a group of enemy soldiers suddenly emerged from the woods, clearly well prepared. Their appearance quickly disrupted Cheng Yuwei's plans; it seemed the enemy had already known her route and had set a trap.

"Protect Miss Cheng!" The leading soldier shouted, and everyone quickly formed a defensive formation, blocking Cheng Yuwei. A fierce exchange of fire broke out instantly, and the sound of gunfire and shouts filled the dark jungle.

Cheng Yuwei was startled by the sudden onset of the battle, but quickly calmed down. She knew she couldn't lose her mind at this moment. She quickly checked the chemicals nearby, making sure they were intact, and decided to continue toward her target.

"We can't stop!" Cheng Yuwei reminded the soldiers loudly. She knew that if they were delayed by the enemy, their plan would completely fail.

In the chaos, an enemy soldier broke through the defense line and rushed straight towards Cheng Yuwei. Seeing that the knife in his hand was about to swing at her, Cheng Yuwei subconsciously took a step back, quickly took out a bottle of chemical from her arms, and poured it forward without hesitation.

The enemy soldier only had time to scream before he was hit by the chemical agent in the face and fell to the ground, writhing in pain. Seeing this, the surrounding soldiers quickened their pace, desperately fighting off the enemy to buy time for Cheng Yuwei.

After a fierce battle, Cheng Yuwei's team finally broke through and continued their advance toward the enemy's supply line. Her palms sweated, but she felt no regret. She was no longer the doctoral student who only knew how to study chemical reactions in the laboratory, but a decision-maker in the midst of war.

By the time they finally reached the enemy supply line, nearly an hour had passed. Cheng Yuwei immediately directed her soldiers to plant incendiary agents along the enemy's transport routes. Her technique was exceptionally skillful, and she coordinated with the soldiers to quickly place barrels of chemical agents at the most vulnerable points.

"Prepare to ignite!" Cheng Yuwei shouted, her voice firm.

The soldiers moved swiftly, and soon, flames erupted along the enemy's supply line, engulfing the entire transport convoy in flames. With the enemy's rear supplies cut off, the balance of victory in this war began to tilt towards Ling Xiaotian.

However, just as they were about to evacuate, Cheng Yuwei suddenly heard the sound of horse hooves in the distance. She turned around suddenly and caught a glimpse of torches flickering faintly in the woods, and she was startled.

"Enemy reinforcements are coming!" she warned loudly.

The soldiers quickly gathered and prepared to retreat. However, on this narrow path, the enemy reinforcements were getting closer and closer, and the encirclement was quickly forming.

Seeing that the chance of evacuation was getting smaller and smaller, Cheng Yuwei's heartbeat accelerated, and a tense atmosphere enveloped the entire team. She knew that they had fallen into the most dangerous situation at this moment.
