Chapter 12: Taking Chestnuts from the Fire
Mu Qingcheng sat with him on the ground for a long time. Her butt felt cold and her stomach started to growl again. It wasn't that she was hungry again, but that she had never eaten enough. She was running out of food. Should she go out and find something to eat?
Mu Qingcheng placed the water bag next to the young man in white. After thinking for a moment, she decided to tell him. Seeing him forming seals with his hands and meditating intently, she wrote on his back: "I'm going to find something to eat."
The young man in white didn't open his eyes, but nodded slightly to indicate that he understood.
Mu Qingcheng came out of the cave and looked at the sky. The sky was still gray at this time, the wind was a little weaker, and the thick clouds were moving south. It looked like it would rain in the south soon.
The mountains to the south were steep, and the dense forests were overgrown with bushes. It looked difficult to walk through, and she was afraid there might be venomous snakes and wild animals there. She decided to go north to avoid the clouds.
The north wasn't as densely wooded as the south. The terrain was lower, and the slopes weren't as steep. She decided to take her ox with her; at least it would be company! Forget about the heavy cart; it wouldn't be easy to pull through the woods.
Seeing the baskets on the cart, she suddenly had an idea. She had seen photos online of mules carrying loads, complete with a sack on their backs. She tied the baskets together with two ropes and placed them on the ox's back, one on each side. The two baskets could hold a lot, and with the oxen helping her carry them, she felt much more relaxed.
She led the cow into the depths of the northern mountains and forests, marking the trees with a knife as she walked. This was a deep forest, so she must not get lost.
Mu Qingcheng's goal was to pick wild fruits, but after looking for a long time, there were only trees everywhere. She did see a pheasant in the grass, but she chased it for a long time without catching it, and she was exhausted. She didn't even see the shadow of the fruit.
She led the cow all the way to the top of the highest mountain. The wind was so strong there that she stumbled and fell, tumbling down the slope. She lay there dazed for a long time, unable to get up. Fortunately, the slope was covered with grass, so she didn't get hurt, only a few scrapes on the palms of her hands.
"Oh! Oh! I'm going to fall to my death. Hey! What's that on the tree?"
When Mu Qingcheng rolled down, she happened to roll under a tree. She lay on the ground and looked up. The whole tree was covered with green fur balls.
"I seem to have seen this thing somewhere."
She got up, brushed off the dirt on her body, walked around the tree, and looked down to find many fallen green balls on the ground. Some of them had cracked when they fell to the ground, and the fruits inside fell out.
"Ah! It's Chestnut. I said it looked so familiar. I actually found Chestnut."
"Aniu! Come here quickly, I found the chestnuts."
The yellow cow was happily nibbling grass on the top of the mountain. When it turned its head, it could no longer see its sister. Then it listened again and wondered how she had run downstairs.
After mooing twice, the yellow cow obediently walked down the hillside.
Mu Qingcheng called out to Huangniu while peeling the chestnuts with a knife. The skin of the chestnut was very difficult to peel. It was round and slippery, and if you were not careful, you would hurt your hands. The skin and the flesh were also difficult to separate. After much difficulty, she finally peeled a complete one, which was still covered with a layer of soft skin.
In order not to go hungry, Mu Qingcheng exerted her utmost patience, and finally peeled the meat clean, and couldn't wait to put it in her mouth.
"It's delicious, delicious, but a little hard. It's different from what I ate before."
She remembered the sugar-roasted chestnut shop at the school gate. Every time she passed by there, she would be tempted by the aroma and buy a bag. Unfortunately, this one was raw. Now she didn't even have fire. If only she had fire, she could have picked the chestnuts from the fire.
Mu Qingcheng didn't bother to pick chestnuts. She sat under the tree, peeling and eating them. She ate seven or eight in a row before stopping. It wasn't because she couldn't eat anymore, but because her hands hurt from peeling the chestnuts.
After eating a few chestnuts, she finally felt full in her stomach, and then she began to pick up chestnuts on the ground under the tree, but she couldn't reach those on the tree.
"Aniu, there's a tree over there, hurry up."
In half a day, she had picked up half a basket of chestnuts, and the sound of joy echoed in the depths of the forest.
"There are some here, and there too."
A man and a cow picked chestnuts while walking deep into the forest and climbed over a hill.
There are several trees on the opposite mountain that are full of orange-yellow fruits. It is too far away to see what kind of fruits they are.
Mu Qingcheng excitedly trotted down the mountain, then climbed up the opposite mountain without stopping. She could only see clearly when she reached halfway up the mountain.
"It's wild apricots, Niu! Do you like wild apricots? They look so sour!"
The orange-yellow wild apricots shone glossily, hanging heavy in bunches from the tree. Mu Qingcheng's mouth watered with sourness; she didn't like sour fruit. She walked around the tree and finally picked a few; after all, they were food.
Just as he was about to turn around and leave, something hit him on the head.
"Ouch! That hurts!"
Mu Qingcheng thought a fruit had fallen from the tree and hit her on the head. She looked up at the tree, and another fruit hit her forehead. Immediately, her forehead became red and swollen.
"Who is it? Who is so lacking in public morality and throwing things around?" This was definitely not a coincidence. The moment she turned around, she seemed to see a figure in the tree.
"Come out here right now, or I'll get mad and you'll have to bear the consequences! Humph!"
She picked up the apricot that had just attacked her and prepared to fight back against the attacker.
A dark yellow figure suddenly swooped down from the treetops. It turned out to be a monkey. Hanging upside down from a branch, it bared its teeth and squeaked wildly at her, as if warning her that this was its territory.
Mu Qingcheng didn't want to pick wild apricots at first, but when she saw that the monkey was so domineering and dared to provoke her and even hit her head, she got angry!
"So it's you, you little jerk, who actually dared to sneak attack me. Do you really think that there are no tigers in the mountains and you are the overlord? Humph! This tree is not yours, why can't I pick it? I insist on picking it."
Mu Qingcheng lowered the branch and started picking wild apricots. When one hand was full and couldn't hold them all, she put the apricots on the ground and continued picking.
The monkey jumped onto the branch above her head, jumping up and down, shaking the branch violently, and making a shrill roar.
The consequence was that the wild apricots fell like hail and hit her head, and Mu Qingcheng could only run away with her head in her hands.
When she reached safety, she turned around and waved her fists at the monkey twice. She was not about to admit defeat. The monkey stood on the branch, baring its teeth at her provocatively and throwing fruit at her.
"You are a stinking monkey with no moral principles."
She also picked up some fruit from the ground and threw it at the monkey. A fight ensued between the man and the monkey.
Soon, Mu Qingcheng was defeated. She was really exhausted and sat down on the ground panting.
The monkey was full of energy, jumping up and down, showing off its power on the tree.
"You stinky monkey, just wait, we'll have a fight to the death tomorrow."
Mu Qingcheng was snorting angrily, rubbing her swollen forehead and preparing to leave. When she saw the wild apricots on the ground, she thought it would be a pity to throw them away, so she pulled the cow over and started picking the wild apricots into the basket.
The monkey on the tree was not afraid of Mu Qingcheng, but it became a little timid when it saw the yellow cattle. It was not as manic as before. It only dared to jump around on the tree and stare at the yellow cattle vigilantly.
Mu Qingcheng didn't dare to stay any longer. She knew that monkeys were social animals and this monkey was just a sentinel. If it attracted the other monkeys, it would be troublesome.
Seeing that she had picked up almost half a basket of wild apricots, Mu Qingcheng felt that today's harvest was already quite good. She quickly led the yellow cattle back.
After walking a distance, she turned around and waved her fist at the monkey, telling it that she would be back!
