Dreaming back to 1949, the great powers were there to deceive us
Chapter 498: Weird Pension Standards
The pension standards of the security corps are copied from those of the US military.
The US military's definition of death in action is this: a soldier must be killed on the spot by enemy firepower at a clear target while performing a combat mission. If he is dragged onto a stretcher with one breath left, even if he dies immediately, he will not be counted as killed in action, but will be recorded as "death from other causes."
For example, Lieutenant General Walker, commander of the 8th US Army, fell into a deep ditch while riding in a jeep while trying to avoid stray bullets and died. The official cause of death in the US military history was "car accident" and he was not recognized as killed in action.
Furthermore, the deceased must be identified.
The body of the deceased must be discovered by his or her comrades, with at least the face recognizable and the deceased's identification tags effectively collected. If the entire army is wiped out with no survivors, or if the deceased is beaten to a pulp and the identification tags are lost or unrecognizable, the deceased may be recorded as "missing."
Moreover, there are other harsh conditions for being recognized as killed in action. One of them is to be in the designated combat zone. If not, I'm sorry, you cannot be recognized as killed in action!
For example, a US Army squad was attacked by enemy forces in a bar while out and about, and was eventually wiped out. However, because the battle with the enemy was not in a "demarcated combat zone," none of the soldiers were considered killed in action.
There is naturally a reason for such a strange rule.
The first reason is financial pressure. The US military’s death compensation standards are particularly high. To put it in one sentence: if one person dies, the country will support the entire family!
The second reason is to make the data look good. Americans are belligerent and frequently launch foreign wars. If a war results in tens of thousands of casualties, how can they explain this to their own people? But if a war only results in casualties in the single or double digits, doesn't that look good?
The third reason is insurance and legal regulations. If you have ever dealt with an insurance company, you will know that their claims clauses are thicker than a dictionary.
Of course, there are other reasons, but compared with the three mentioned above, they are not worth mentioning.
After listening to Fatty Huang's story, Wen Hai widened his eyes.
A little soldier next to him asked,
"Imperialism and its running dogs are truly ruthless. People have died, and they don't care how they died. Who would want to serve in an army like this?"
"That's not true. They offer good treatment, so they can still attract a lot of soldiers. Don't underestimate the US military. Their combat effectiveness is quite formidable. For example, they have more artillery shells than they can fire. Have you seen our armored battalion? I heard that entire US divisions are equipped with this type of equipment!"
Before Fatty Huang finished speaking, a light shout came from the distance.
"Comrades, change your clothes immediately! The 'enemy' has begun to counterattack. We need to 'flee in a hurry'. Hurry up! Evacuate in three minutes!"
After receiving his green uniform, Wen Hai quickly changed into it. As for the blue uniform of the security corps, he put it in his backpack. It was made of nylon cloth, quite sturdy, and could be disassembled to make shoes in the future.
After everyone changed their clothes, they fled in a panic in groups.
While running away, Wen Hai took out a grenade and threw it towards a deserted place.
Boom!
The fire produced by the explosion immediately attracted the attention of a high-altitude reconnaissance aircraft, and the observer turned the camera and began taking pictures of the area.
On a hilltop a few kilometers away, Qiu Fu drove a tank across a ridge of Huoling. After identifying the direction, he decisively fired at a certain area.
Unfortunately, it missed.
Wen Hai ran very fast. Fortunately, there were mountains surrounding this place, so it was difficult for tanks to chase him.
After Qiu Fu chased the enemy to a steep mountain, he had to stop. After thinking for a moment, he retreated decisively and called for artillery support.
Less than three minutes after Wen Hai crossed the top of the mountain, the area he had just passed was covered by napalm bombs and set on fire.
Everyone was frightened.
This time, every second counts in the plan. If even one link is not executed properly, there may be heavy casualties.
Wen Hai looked at the time and continued running forward.
He finally understood why the superiors had to conduct high-intensity physical training. Anyone with poor physical fitness would not be able to withstand such a high-intensity march.
After Wen Hai crossed another ridge, the area he had just passed was covered by fire again, and the flames produced by the burning illuminated the entire sky.
Many wooden men placed in the forest were engulfed in the raging fire.
When Wen Hai encountered fire coverage for the third time from behind, everyone could finally breathe a sigh of relief, because this place was beyond the range of the security group's cannon.
But everyone still didn't dare to pause, they were completely scared.
Humans are emotional animals, and often rationality cannot control human behavior.
……
The Jitoushan Command Center was lively and cheerful just now, but now the air is filled with depression.
Preliminary casualty statistics have been compiled. At least 800 infantrymen were 'missing' in this raid, their fate obvious. Many were likely vaporized by the intense heat of the explosion.
Xie Zhiyu's face was so gloomy that water could be squeezed out of it.
Chief of Staff Wu Heng stood up and said in a deep voice,
"Commander, I formulated the battle plan. I am willing to take full responsibility for such a huge mistake."
Upon hearing this, Deputy Head Liu Hu also stood up and said calmly,
"Commander, colleagues, although we suffered heavy casualties this time, we must also recognize that we destroyed an entire enemy artillery regiment and captured Qu Zhongqiu alive. Remarkably, after the explosion, Qiu Fu ordered a counterattack, and the brothers were not deterred by the devastating blast; instead, they resolutely obeyed the order!"
Liu Hu stared into Xie Zhiyu's eyes and said loudly,
"Although we brothers cannot be described as indomitable, our ability to remain calm in the face of danger is worthy of recognition. Our unit has already begun to develop a soldier's spirit! This is the greatest gain of this battle!"
Xie Zhiyu's expression finally eased a little, and he said calmly,
"No matter what, this is also a victory!"
Xie Zhiyu looked at Wu Heng, forced a smile, and said comfortingly,
"I approved the battle plan, and I bear all responsibility. Just make sure to provide post-war compensation and don't let our brothers down."
"Yes!"
Staff Officer He hesitated a bit, but still said,
"According to regulations, many soldiers can only be considered 'missing'. This will probably cause huge controversy. I still need the regiment's guidance on this matter."
Xie Zhiyu threw his military cap on the table and shouted,
"If there's no trace left, how can we just consider them missing? That's bullshit! If the compensation regulations are unreasonable, then revise them. There's nothing wrong with that!"
"Yes!"
Pensions are not only compensation for the fallen, but also a form of protection for active-duty soldiers. Every soldier is the breadwinner of their family. Once killed in action, their families' lives immediately fall into hardship. Without pensions, who would be willing to carry a gun and defend their homeland in the future?
Wu Heng sighed.
"We rely on the land of one county to support more than 70,000 soldiers. The financial pressure is enormous. If it weren't for the assistance of our international friends, we simply couldn't bear it."
Xie Zhiyu thought for a moment and asked,
"Isn't the Light Industry Expo coming up soon? Organize all the bosses in the county to attend. If they get orders, we can collect more taxes!"
"Also, all non-essential combat personnel in the regiment will be sent out in batches to help companies with sales. To encourage everyone's enthusiasm, we can discuss with the companies and offer them some commissions. This task will be assigned to Deputy Commander Zhu Jie. Chief of Staff, please give Zhu Jie a call later."
"Yes!"
