Yamada Hanatarō is the younger brother of Yamada Seinosuke, the director of Mao Shayakuin, who was also the former vice-captain of the 4th Division.

Under the influence of his brother, Hanatarō became a Shinigami who disliked fighting but loved medicine. He eventually joined the Fourth Division and served as the seventh seat. This can be seen from his Zanpakutō. After all, the Zanpakutō of any combat squad would be in the shape of a scalpel when released.

"I was bringing snacks to Rukia a few days ago, but today she was transferred to the Fourth Deep Cell." Hanatarō said with a depressed look on his face, "I wanted to visit her, but I was kicked out."
