The Rise of the Youth in the War of Resistance
Chapter 53: Organizing Thoughts (1)
Zhao Shao was lying on the soft bed, staring at the ceiling with empty eyes, his mind full of thoughts.
He knew very well why he had to leave Wang Shi. Since the moment he left his hometown and embarked on this journey two months ago, he felt as if he was haunted by some mysterious misfortune.
It was a sunny day two months ago, with a gentle breeze. Zhao Shao and Wang Shi were walking together through the winding, endless Yashan Pass.
Along the way, Wang Shi's face was always filled with a bright smile, and he enthusiastically told various anecdotes.
He told Zhao Shao everything about his background and every detail of his life, including the things he had always wanted to know.
Zhao Shao listened very tacitly, nodding in response or interjecting a few witty remarks from time to time, which made Wang Shi more and more excited, and he spoke fluently and incessantly.
The two of them chatted and laughed, and the atmosphere was relaxed and happy.
However, at this moment, something unexpected happened!
All he heard was Zhao Shao exclaiming, "Oh my, look!"
Wang Shi looked in the direction of the voice and saw a figure suddenly appear not far ahead.
Upon closer inspection, they realized that the man was a very familiar face to them - Qi Jia, an officer under General Qi, and also the highest-ranking officer Zhao Shao and Wang Shi had ever met in the military camp!
At this moment, Qi Jia's face was full of fear, his eyes were wide open, and his breathing was rapid and disordered.
His legs moved alternately and frantically as if they were clockwork, and each step was filled with endless fear and despair.
At the same time, he turned his head and looked back from time to time, his eyes filled with extreme panic, as if he felt that there was a large group of extremely cruel and evil people chasing him from behind, determined to kill him.
I saw the injured arm hanging down limply, shaking as the body ran.
The originally neat clothes had now become tattered, covered in dust and blood, and looked extremely disheveled.
When Qi Jia caught sight of Zhao Shao and the other two, he felt like he had grabbed a life-saving straw and shouted for help without hesitation:
"Heroes over there, please have mercy on me and save me!"
Before he finished speaking, he rushed towards the two people without hesitation, completely disregarding whether the other party was willing to lend a hand.
But deep down in his heart, Qi Jia was secretly thinking: As long as I can successfully approach these two people, and then pretend to be relaxed and careless, when I get close to their horses, that's the time to take their lives!
However, the experienced and well-trained Wang Shi was able to keenly perceive that the seemingly pitiful person in front of him actually had ulterior motives just by a slight eye contact.
So he immediately shouted loudly:
"Stop right here!"
But Qi Jia did not heed Wang Shi's warning, and continued to plead:
"Please, two kind-hearted brothers, save me!"
As he spoke, he did not forget to point to the shocking wounds on his body with his other hand, trying to gain sympathy.
Despite this, he did not slow down his pace at all, and even ignored Wang Shi's movement of reaching for the gun behind him.
At this critical moment, a clear and rapid system prompt sound suddenly came into Zhao Shao's mind:
"Host, please squat down immediately!"
Zhao Shao was shocked and had no time to think. He threw away the whip in his hand without hesitation and quickly squatted down.
In the blink of an eye, a bullet shot out like an arrow, whistling sharply and passing over Zhao Shao's head with a whoosh.
The bullet was extremely fast and powerful, hitting the only horse accurately.
The poor horse didn't even have time to make a groan before its eyes rolled back and it fell to the ground with a bang. After its limbs twitched a few times, it completely lost its life.
Wang Shi, who had just come to his senses, heard the sudden sound of gunfire and knew something was wrong.
At the moment when the enemy was about to pull the trigger at him, he took the initiative to attack with his years of combat experience and keen intuition.
Even before the other party pulled the trigger of his pistol, Wang Shi had already decisively fired.
Fortunately, although the old sleeve gun was a bit outdated, it still demonstrated its powerful power at such a critical moment.
There was a "bang" sound of a gunshot, and the bullet hit Qi Jia right in the middle of his eyebrows.
Qi Jia's face was full of disbelief as he stared at Zhao Shao, then slowly fell to the ground, unable to move anymore.
However, things are far from over. Before one wave subsides, a new wave has already begun.
Those who were chasing Qi Jia were hiding in the nearby forest. One of them shouted loudly:
"Everyone hurry up and follow!
The gunshots came from this direction, so this 'fat fish' must be nearby!"
I saw a group of black shadows moving quickly through the dense forest like ghosts.
Standing at the position where Wang Shi is and looking into the distance, one can vaguely see those looming figures, as if they may appear at any time.
Wang Shi's heart tightened, and he turned his head without hesitation, grabbed Zhao Shao, who was in shock, and ran away.
Zhao Shao was somewhat bewildered by this sudden change. He shouted anxiously:
"Oh, we haven't had time to get our immediate food yet!"
Wang Shi naturally understood how important food was to them at the moment, but the situation was so critical that he could not afford any hesitation.
He released Zhao Shao's hand, which was tightly held on his, and said firmly:
"Go get it, quick!
I'll go buy you some time."
Before he finished speaking, Wang Shi had already shouldered his spear and rushed up the hillside.
After reaching the hillside, he swiftly lay down and pointed his gun at the path where the enemy would soon appear.
Not long after, an unlucky guy rushed out of the woods in a hurry, completely unaware of the danger lurking ahead.
Just as a smug smile appeared on his face, a deadly bullet whizzed towards him and instantly pierced his body.
His smile froze on his face, and his body slowly fell down, unable to move at all.
At this critical moment, Zhao Shao's urgent cry came clearly from not far away:
"Okay, stop dawdling and get out of here!"
Hearing these words, Wang Shi, who was originally lying on the ground, seemed to be struck by an electric current. He stood up instantly, turned around quickly without any hesitation or pause, and moved in one go. Then he followed Zhao Shao closely and ran wildly towards the distant front.
Behind them, the figures who were following them saw one of their companions suddenly fall to the ground without any warning. They all stopped in their tracks and looked around nervously, trying to find out from which direction the fatal bullet had been shot.
When they finally spotted Wang Shi running several dozen meters away, someone in the crowd decisively gave the order:
"Hurry, catch up with him!"
Zhao Shao and Wang Shi fled desperately, with dense forests behind them.
Fortunately, with the cover of the forest, they managed to get rid of some of the pursuers, but there were still a few people who kept chasing them.
A stray bullet happened to hit the package of rice on Wang Shi's back. There was a crisp sound, and the package broke open. The rice inside poured out like a waterfall, making a rustling sound.
However, at this moment, the two had no time to care about these losses and could only continue to run forward.
Under Zhao Shao's guidance, they deliberately chose to cross areas covered with thorns and bushes.
Perhaps because the two men possessed extraordinary physical strength and perseverance, the sound of gunfire chasing behind them gradually became weaker and weaker until it completely disappeared.
Despite this, Wang Shi still did not dare to take it lightly. He gasped for breath and said anxiously to Zhao Shao:
"While the enemy has lost our trail... let's hurry... and escape!"
So the two of them gritted their teeth and continued running for a full hour.
Finally, due to excessive exhaustion, they were too weak to move forward and had to stop.
But running around like this made the two of them lose their way...
