Three Kingdoms: Domination of the World
Chapter 255: Defeating the Qing Army's Main Force
Suo Chao's Eye of Truth was like a battlefield radar, detecting the Qing army's movements at a glance. He peered into the long, winding Qing army camp and couldn't help but gasp.
"My dear husband, I will attack the camp tonight." Zhen Jiang was eager to give it a try and asked for battle. The ambush on the remnants of Duoduo's army last time had further strengthened her determination to lead the army.
"Yes! Husband, I am also willing to lead an army to raid the Qing army camp." Liu Xiu did not show any weakness and asked for orders.
"Okay, ladies. I have my own plans for this battle." Suo Chao sent the two ladies back to World D. After returning to World D, the two of them immediately started training the army without stopping.
Suo Chao needed to determine the exact location of the Qing army's food and fodder, as too many people would only hinder his efforts. In the dead of night, he used his supernatural powers to carefully explore the whereabouts of the Qing army's baggage train.
His body pressed tightly against the ground, his movements light and agile. Suo Chao's eyes were focused and sharp, not missing a single detail.
"Hard work pays off."
Suo Chao activated his "Know Yourself, Know Your Enemy" skill and discovered the enemy's forage officer's location. His gaze was like that of a hawk, fixed on his target, silently calculating the timing of his action.
After several days of careful searching and investigation, Suo Chao finally found out the exact location of the enemy's food and grass camp.
Dorgon's army was at the gates of the city, and Yan Xiang went out to fight. After several battles, Yan Xiang's vanguard troops pretended to be defeated, and Dorgon did not fall for it easily.
"Your Highness, the Southern Ming army has limited combat power. We have been too cautious. It would be better to take them down in one fell swoop," said Wu Sangui.
"No, we haven't found any trace of Suo Chao yet, so we can't be careless. Besides, Qin Liangyu is not a kind person."
The Qing generals were deadlocked for a moment, but Dorgon made the final decision. He ordered the army to rest for three days to recuperate before attacking Yangzhou. That night, Suo Chao also prepared a surprise attack on the Qing army's main forage camp.
On a dark and windy night, Suo Chao sneaked into the Qing army camp like a ghost. His movements were silent and ghostly.
Suo Chao dealt with the patrolling Qing soldiers and rushed into the Qing army's largest food and fodder camp. He activated his unparalleled sword domain and quietly took away the military rations and supplies there.
That night, Suo Chao looted three large food camps and took most of the Qing army's supplies. However, his crime was exposed, and he was unable to take the rest of the supplies.
The grain officers were shocked to discover that three grain camps had been robbed and the military rations had disappeared. They immediately informed the regent Dorgon of the theft.
"Your Highness, most of our army's food and fodder has been stolen." The food and fodder officer's voice trembled, his face was full of fear, and his eyes revealed despair.
"We dispersed and stored food and grass, but the enemy still got them?" Dorgon's face was gloomy, and his eyes revealed anger and anxiety.
For several days, Dorgon's grain camp suffered repeated incidents, either being looted or burned. Even after executing several grain officials, this situation could not be avoided. Even the supply route was cut off by Suo Chao.
"This is too much! This enemy is too cunning and we can't find any trace of him at all." Wu Sangui said.
"We have ambushed him many times, and this thief is very smart and just won't be fooled," said Hong Chengchou.
Suo Chao has the skill of Eye of Truth, which allows him to see the entire map clearly, so how could he fall into the Qing army's trap?
"Forget it. The enemy is in the dark and we are in the light! Order the army to go to the countryside to plunder food. There is not much food now, and we must quickly capture Yangzhou City." Dorgon said.
Dorgon was filled with anger and secretly made up his mind. The 200,000-strong army was about to face the dilemma of lack of food and could not delay any longer.
Early next morning.
With a single command, Dorgon's offensive began. War drums thundered, horns blared, and the Qing army surged toward Yangzhou City like a tide.
On the city wall, the Ming army was on high alert, and archers drew their bowstrings, ready to meet the attack of Dorgon's army.
The first to attack were the Qing army's catapults. Huge stones were hurled at the city walls, crashing with such force that the walls seemed to tremble. Then came the thunderous bombardment of red-coated cannons.
The Ming army soldiers dodged the attacks of stones and artillery fire, but many of them were still hit, and screams were heard one after another.
However, the walls of Yangzhou were so strong that the catapults and cannons did not cause much damage to them. Qin Liangyu saw this and ordered her archers to launch a counterattack.
"Soldiers, prepare! Fire!" Arrows rained down like locusts, thousands of them whistling towards Dorgon's army.
Wu Sangui brandished his broadsword, deflecting the arrows fired at him. The soldiers behind him raised their shields and advanced with difficulty. Some Qing soldiers were unfortunately hit by arrows and fell in a pool of blood, but they continued to advance without retreating.
Shi Kefa and Zhang Xianzhong's troops each tied down portions of the Qing army. Qin Liangyu steadfastly defended the city, abandoning the idea of a field battle. The Empress's order was to hold back the Qing army and secure the city at all costs.
After a long siege, Dorgon's eyes revealed madness and determination, as if he was gambling with his life or death.
The Qing army's siege of the city was not going smoothly. This was the first tough battle since the army entered the pass.
Dorgon thought that the army's food and fodder were about to run out, so he had to prepare for a withdrawal in advance. The Qing army's grain collection teams were repeatedly ambushed by the Ming army, suffering heavy losses.
"Generals, the morale of the Ming army is high. We are running out of food and grass," said Dorgon.
"Your Highness, we are running out of food and fodder. Let's withdraw first. There is no trace of Suo Chao, and I am afraid that the army is in danger of collapse." Hong Chengchou said.
Qin Liangyu fortified her city, cleared the fields, and swept away the people and food from the nearby towns, holding her ground and waiting for the enemy to make a move. Her eyes revealed determination and wisdom, as if she was waiting for the perfect opportunity.
"Your Majesty, when are we going to attack?" Yan Xiang said.
"Haha! Everything is ready, only the east wind is missing." said the empress.
Dorgon hesitated again and again and prepared to withdraw his troops back to the north, but Suo Chao refused to let go of this excellent opportunity to fight.
Suo Chao activated his Wushuang power and summoned 35 troops from World D. The troops were well-organized and blocked Dorgon's retreat.
"Dorgon, your death has come! You can no longer be the strongest takeover man." Suo Chao looked calm. He was sure to win this battle.
Seeing that the "east wind" of the Ming Dynasty had arrived, the empress ordered four generals to send 300,000 troops to encircle Dorgon's army.
Dorgon saw his 20-man army surrounded, and he was unwilling to follow in the footsteps of Zhao Kuo, Ma Su, and Xiang Yu. He organized several breakouts, but all were in vain.
The Qing army fell one after another, and the hope of a breakthrough was shattered. Dorgon's eyes revealed despair and helplessness, as if he was waiting for the judgment of fate.
In the Qing court, Empress Dowager Dayu'er ruled from behind the scenes, with the young Emperor Shunzhi on the throne. Upon learning that her old lover was surrounded by Ming troops, she dispatched multiple armies to urgently reinforce him.
The Qing army had been without food for over a month, relying on slaughtering war horses and gnawing on the corpses of the dead. The Qing reinforcements were ambushed and defeated one by one by the four generals.
The Ming army adopted the tactic of besieging and attacking reinforcements, and the Qing army was unable to reinforce Dorgon. Wu Sangui's eyes revealed despair and helplessness, as if he was experiencing an inescapable nightmare.
"If I had known this would happen, why would I surrender to the Qing Dynasty? I am a sinner!" Wu Sangui said to himself.
The Ming army besieged the Qing army for over two months, and with little food and water, the Qing army's psychological defenses finally collapsed. Of the 200,000 Qing troops, 160,000 surrendered, with over 40,000 killed in battle or by starvation. Dorgon, shamed, committed suicide.
The empress ordered the rebel generals Wu Sangui and Hong Chengchou to be executed immediately.
The war ended with a glorious victory for the Ming army, and the situation in the Southern Ming Dynasty improved. Empress Zhu Weiya smiled with satisfaction, and her heart was filled with hope for the rejuvenation of the Ming Dynasty.
