Travels of a Female Physician in the Ming Dynasty

Chapter 7 The Strange Guard: Are you trying to infringe on my medical skills?

As soon as he entered the room, the prince was sitting on the bed, his face pale, his brows furrowed, and he was obviously in great pain.

"Miss Yang..." He looked up at me and forced a smile, "It seems that the medicine I took yesterday didn't take effect completely."

I walked over and took his pulse.

Sure enough, the prince's pulse was a little disordered. He must have caught a cold last night, which aggravated his cold.

I sighed inwardly: His Royal Highness the Crown Prince is too careless. He was just feeling better yesterday, but he got sick again today.

"Your Highness, was there a cold wind again last night?" I asked tentatively.

The prince was slightly startled, then nodded: "I was taking a walk in the Imperial Garden last night, and there was indeed a cool breeze."

I was speechless: "Didn't you do this yourself?"

However, I maintained a polite smile. "Your Highness, you haven't recovered from your cold yet, and the cold has made it worse. I'll prescribe you another medicine. Remember not to get cold again within three days."

The prince nodded helplessly: "Miss Yang is right. I will definitely follow the doctor's instructions this time."

Soon, I prescribed another prescription to dispel the cold and reminded the prince to keep warm.

After finishing all this, I finally breathed a sigh of relief and could finally go home.

After finishing my work in the prince's bedroom, I was about to go back home, wondering if I could have a good nap today, when I suddenly heard a noise coming from outside the East Palace.

It sounds like something happened.

"Miss, there seems to be someone causing trouble outside." Xiao Cui came over and reminded me in a low voice.

I frowned, thinking that this palace is not a place where you can make a fuss. Could it be that some ignorant person has caused trouble?

Out of curiosity, I decided to go over and take a look.

As soon as I walked out of the bedroom, I saw several eunuchs and palace maids gathered together, pointing and talking.

Among them, there was a tall guard in tattered clothes lying on the ground, holding his stomach with his hands, his face pale and looking in great pain.

"Ouch, I can't take it anymore! It hurts so much! Hurry, call the imperial physician! Otherwise I will go to see the King of Hell--" The guard groaned and rolled over exaggeratedly, as if he was about to die.

As I approached, the young eunuch next to me recognized me and ran over quickly: "Miss Yang, please take a look, this guard seems to have some serious illness and is in great pain!"

I was speechless: This cry was worse than death, could it be a perforated intestine? However, watching his exaggerated performance, I always felt that something was wrong.

"Let me see." I squatted down and prepared to take his pulse.

When the guard saw me, his eyes suddenly lit up and he instantly stopped his "painful performance". Then he said in a slightly dramatic tone, "Miss Yang, are you the legendary doctor with superb Chinese medicine skills?"

I glanced at him suspiciously, wondering how this guy even knew my name. Could he be coming for me?

"Well, my medical skills are not divine, but I can definitely save your life." I replied indifferently, my hand already on his pulse.

As soon as I touched it, I was speechless.

The pulse was very steady, with no signs of acute illness at all.

This guy is clearly pretending to be sick!

I raised my head and pretended to be serious: "I'm afraid your illness is a bit tricky."

When the guard heard this, his face immediately showed an expression that said, "I knew I was going to die soon." He nodded repeatedly, "Yes, yes, yes, I think so too! My stomach hurts so much, I'm afraid I'm going to die. Miss Yang, you must save me!"

I almost laughed out loud, but I held it back.

Judging from his attitude, I guess he wants to take advantage of my medical skills?

Okay, then I'll play with you.

"Your illness is indeed not simple. If an ordinary imperial physician comes, I'm afraid he really can't cure it." I said seriously.

The guard's eyes lit up and he quickly agreed, "Right, right, right! Young lady is really smart. She can tell at a glance that my illness is not simple!"

I was so happy inside, but my face remained serious: "But... your illness is not completely incurable."

He immediately moved closer, his eyes full of anticipation: "Really? Miss, please save me! I still want to live and marry a wife!"

I was speechless: Wow, even the subsequent plot has been arranged?

"Your illness is a 'fake illness'." I said lightly.

The guard was stunned for a moment, then his expression changed: "Fake illness? What...what kind of illness is this?"

I suppressed my laughter and patiently explained, "It seems like the symptoms are serious, but they're actually nothing serious. Usually, only people who are overly nervous or trying to feign illness get this disease."

The guard was speechless, his face flushed. "Uh, this..."

The palace maids and eunuchs watching around were also trying to suppress their laughter, obviously realizing that this guy was fooling around.

I stood up and clapped my hands. "Okay, since you're not sick, don't waste everyone's time here. Hurry up and get going."

The guard awkwardly got up from the ground with an awkward smile on his face: "Hehe, Miss Yang, please forgive me for laughing. I'm just... uh, I do feel a little uncomfortable in my stomach."

I couldn't help but roll my eyes: "Next time when you pretend to be sick, at least pretend it's more convincing."

Just as I was about to leave, I suddenly heard the guard chasing after me: "Miss Yang, wait!"

I looked back and saw that this guy still hadn't given up.

"What's wrong? Your stomach starts to hurt again?" I joked.

The guard scratched his head, a silly smile on his face. "No, no, Miss Yang, my name is Cheng Xiaohu, and I'm a guard in the palace. I was wrong just now, pretending to be sick to tease you. However, I heard that you are an excellent doctor, and I just happen to have a small question I want to ask you."

This guy's attitude suddenly became quite serious, and I became curious: "Oh? What's the problem?"

Cheng Xiaohu scratched his head, looking a little embarrassed. "Actually... I've been having trouble sleeping lately. I keep having nightmares. Every time I dream, I can't catch up with the thief, and end up getting scolded by my boss. Do you think this is a psychological problem?"

I almost couldn't hold back my laughter. This guard had a really wild imagination, even asking me about his dreams.

"You're under a lot of pressure and carrying a heavy burden on your mind," I replied in all seriousness, adding a little inspirational advice: "Relax a little on your daytime patrols and stop dwelling on catching thieves. Then you might stop having these dreams."

Cheng Xiaohu was stunned for a moment, then nodded heavily: "I see! It turns out that I'm under too much pressure! Thank you for your advice, Miss Yang. I'll go back and relax!"

I smiled and waved my hands: "Okay, just stop pretending to be sick and scaring people."

Watching Cheng Xiaohu leave happily, I shook my head.

Although this guy is a bit silly, he is quite interesting.

I didn’t expect to meet such a “weirdo” in this serious palace.

On the way back, I couldn’t help thinking: The ancient people were really interesting, even the guards could be so "dramatic".

Traveling here is really full of surprises.

Returning to the house, I collapsed on the bed exhausted, silently sighing in my heart: Traveling back to ancient times, I actually became the "royal doctor". These days are really full of surprises!

However, it is quite fun to be able to use modern medical knowledge in ancient times.

But... I hope I don't have to go through this again next time.
