Travels of a Female Physician in the Ming Dynasty
Chapter 18 I Became the "Medical Center" of the Yang Mansion
Ever since I was "personally appointed" by the Queen Mother as the Prince's "marriage consultant", I decided to keep a low profile in the Yang Mansion for a few days and stay away from the troubles in the palace.
After all, I came here to be a happy doctor, not to be a matchmaker for the royal family!
However, life in the Yang family was not always so peaceful.
After all, there are many people and many things to do in the mansion, and as the "chief imperial physician" of the mansion, I naturally cannot be idle.
That day, I was sitting in the yard enjoying the warm autumn sun, holding a medical book in my hand and studying ancient pharmacology.
Suddenly, a servant came running over, panting, "Miss, this is bad! The second young lady...she suddenly has a severe stomachache. The master wants you to go over and take a look."
When I heard this, I immediately became nervous: "Second sister? Wasn't she fine before? Why did she suddenly have a stomachache?"
The servant's face was filled with anxiety. "I don't know either. The Second Miss suddenly turned pale after lunch and cried out in pain while holding her stomach. Madam was so worried that she had to ask you to come over and take a look."
I quickly stood up, grabbed my medicine box, and rushed to the second young lady's yard. This stomachache is so severe, I need to get medical attention immediately. If it's acute appendicitis, that's no joke.
When I arrived at the yard of the second young lady Yang Ruoqing, I saw her lying on the bed, her face pale, her hands covering her stomach, and cold sweat on her forehead.
Madam Yang was standing by the bed, looking anxious. When she saw me rushing over, she immediately came over and said, "Tong'er, go check on your sister. She's been complaining of stomachaches since lunch, and they won't get better."
I quickly walked to the bedside and gently pressed Yang Ruoqing's abdomen: "Second sister, where does your stomach hurt? Like being stabbed, or is it bloating?"
Yang Ruoqing gritted his teeth and said weakly, "It feels like... like being stabbed by a knife. It hurts a lot."
My heart sank and I immediately started diagnosing.
Judging from her symptoms, this is most likely an acute stomach cramp, or food poisoning from eating something she shouldn't have.
"Mom, what did my second sister eat for lunch today?" I asked.
Mrs. Yang immediately replied, "The kitchen prepared some common dishes today, nothing special. Ruoqing usually eats very light meals, so how could something unexpected happen?"
I frowned and began to analyze in my mind: It doesn't look like a problem with the food itself. It may be that the second young lady's stomach has been a little weak recently, and the food is a little greasy, which has caused acute stomach cramps.
"Second sister, have you ever had symptoms of stomachache before? For example, feeling bloated after eating, or occasionally having a dull pain?" I continued to ask.
Yang Ruoqing nodded weakly: "Sometimes... but not this serious."
I had a rough idea in my mind. This was a typical stomach attack. It might be that her usual diet was not regular, and the recent cool weather had caught her stomach and intestines, which led to today's acute attack.
"Don't worry, mother. My second sister is suffering from an acute stomach cramp. It's not a big deal." I comforted Madam Yang while quickly taking out some medicinal powders from the medicine box, mixed them with a bowl of warm water and handed it to Yang Ruoqing. "Second sister, drink it slowly. The medicine will relieve the pain."
Yang Ruoqing bit her lip as she took the medicine bowl and drank it with difficulty. After a while, her complexion gradually improved and the pain eased a little.
"Next, I'll prescribe you some stomach-tonifying medicine. Eat more mild and easily digestible foods on a daily basis, and avoid spicy and greasy foods."
As I wrote the prescription, I instructed, "Also, Second Sister, you need to have a regular sleep schedule and stop staying up late. It hurts your stomach."
Madam Yang nodded repeatedly after hearing this: "Okay, I'll do as you say! This child hasn't been paying much attention to his diet and rest recently. You've been working really hard, Tong'er."
I smiled and said, "You're welcome, Madam. It's my duty to take good care of my family."
I finally breathed a sigh of relief after leaving the Second Young Lady's yard. Luckily, it was just a stomach cramp, nothing serious.
However, the dietary structure in ancient times is really worrying. If you eat too much greasy food, your stomach will not be able to handle it.
I suddenly had an urge to popularize modern healthy eating concepts to everyone in the palace.
"Xiao Cui, remember to remind the kitchen to serve the second young lady lighter meals in the future. Her stomach can't stand the stress." I reminded her as I walked.
Xiao Cui nodded: "Miss, you are amazing. You can even cure this stomachache so quickly!"
I couldn't help but laugh: "That's nothing, once you learn it, it will be a piece of cake."
Xiao Cui looked at me with admiration: "Miss, you cure illnesses and save lives every day. You are simply the 'living god' in our mansion!"
I waved my hands: "I'm not some immortal, I'm just a 'part-time imperial physician'."
I returned to my own courtyard and was just about to rest for a while when another servant came to announce, "Miss, the master wants you to go to the study."
I was immediately confused: Why was my father looking for me? Was there something important?
With a hint of doubt, I rushed to the study.
In the study, Yang Shiqi was sitting at the desk with a serious expression. When he saw me come in, he put down the pen in his hand and motioned me to sit down.
"Dad, what do you want to talk to me about?" I asked cautiously.
Yang Shiqi sighed, his tone a little tired. "Tong'er, the court has been in turmoil lately. As an important official, I naturally have to worry about a lot of things. But your elder brother and elder sister's marriage cannot be delayed. In addition, your younger sister is in poor health, and the affairs of the mansion have also taken up a lot of my attention."
When I heard this, I suddenly felt nervous: No way, why is it another marriage?
"Father, don't worry. I will take good care of my second sister's health and will not let her get into any problems again. As for the marriage of my eldest brother and eldest sister, don't you already have suitable candidates?" I asked tentatively.
Yang Shiqi shook his head. "The choice has been made, but these matters ultimately need to be discussed with your mother. Your mother intends to ask you to help with the arrangements, after all, you are familiar with the rules of the palace and the mansion."
I suddenly felt helpless. Why did it feel like I was not only a full-time doctor, but also had to work part-time as a wedding planner?
"Tong'er, you are the most sensible one in the family. Father knows that you don't like these mundane affairs, but sometimes, you have to do it when you are in your position." Yang Shiqi said earnestly.
I smiled bitterly in my heart: I just want to be a happy doctor, why can't I escape from these things?
"Don't worry, Dad. I will help Mom deal with these things. But... you also have to make sure to get some rest. You haven't looked well lately." I changed the subject and said with concern.
Yang Shiqi was slightly stunned, then smiled with relief: "You, child, are becoming more and more considerate of your father."
After saying that, he waved his hand and said, "Go and get busy. There are many things to do in the mansion, and you don't have to do everything yourself."
I nodded, but thought to myself: It seems that I will have to worry about the marriage in the Yang family for a while.
Back in my room, I sorted out the herbs at hand while thinking about the trivial matters in the mansion.
I originally thought that life would be easier if I traveled through time and became a doctor, but I didn't expect that life in ancient times would also have so many troubles.
However, thinking back to the sense of accomplishment I felt when I treated the second young lady today, and the trust and reliance my family had on me, I gradually felt relieved.
After all, this is my home. It is my responsibility to take care of my family's health and handle the affairs of the house.
"Miss, you have been so busy lately that you don't even have time to rest." Xiao Cui came in with tea and muttered.
I smiled and said, "It's busy, but it's also quite fulfilling. At least I can still use my medical skills to help everyone."
Xiao Cui blinked: "Miss, you are really a busy person. Everyone in the mansion can't do without you!"
I took a sip of tea and couldn't help but feel a little relieved: Yes, everyone trusts me, and I have my own value.
Although life in ancient times had all kinds of troubles, I have made up my mind that no matter what challenges there are in the future, as the "full-time imperial physician" of the Yang Mansion, I will definitely continue to live my "little life"!
