Spoiled after marriage

Chapter 7: Chess, Calligraphy and Painting

In the study, Sheng Yan and Xia Kui were accompanying Old Master Sheng. Li Mo had been scolded and sent home, and was never allowed to go to Sheng Garden again.

In the antique study, there are calligraphy and paintings by famous people, antique pottery, and ancient and modern Chinese and foreign historical books, which are enough to show that the old man is not only a big shot in the business world, but also a great calligrapher with a wide range of knowledge.

"Xiao Kui, you are a university teacher or a professor or something," Grandpa Sheng asked his granddaughter-in-law curiously.

Xia Kui answered gently: "French"

"Oh, that's amazing," Sheng Rong couldn't help but praise her when he heard her say that.

It was also the first time that Sheng Yan knew that she was teaching French, and he couldn't help but look at her.

"It's not that great, grandpa's calligraphy is still better." Xia Kui saw many calligraphy works imitating Mi Fu in the study.

Sheng Rong was excited when she said that. "Oh, Xiao Kui knows calligraphy, can she write?"

Xia Kui smiled and said: "I don't understand. I learned from my grandfather for a few days when I was a child, but I can't write well."

"Really? Calligraphy requires more practice and writing. When Ayan was a child, he could never sit still when asked to write." Sheng Rong complained about his grandson without any hesitation. Sheng Yan raised his eyebrows and listened, not daring to refute.

Sheng Rong asked her to write a few words. Xia Kui did not refuse. She said sorry and walked to the desk.

Sheng Yan stood in front and looked at her. Xia Kui leaned over and wrote very seriously. Her calligraphy skills could be seen from the first word she wrote. Sheng Rong walked over with admiration in his eyes.

Xia Kui imitated Yan Zhenqing's regular script. The characters were vigorous and powerful, yet gentle and delicate. You couldn't tell at all that they were written by a girl with slender arms.

Sheng Rong was very satisfied with his grandson's wife. He knew he had made the right choice. She was well-educated, talented, and beautiful, neither humble nor overbearing. She was worthy of his grandson. He praised her, "Xiao Kui, can't you write well?"

"It's not as good as yours," Xia Kui put down the pen in her hand, looked up at him and said.

"You girl, are trying to make grandpa happy," Sheng Rong picked up the words she wrote and nodded repeatedly: "Not bad, better than his," referring to Sheng Yan.

Sheng Yan curled his lips and looked at her, and replied: "Grandpa, you are right."

Xia Kui looked at him: "? Pretend to be dead!"

Old Master Sheng noticed the eye contact between the two people and said, "This can be framed," and the butler came over and took it.

Xia Kui: "Grandpa, I..."

"You don't need to be modest, good is good," he said, and asked the two to sit down and drink tea.

Xia Kui sat down obediently, and the couple chatted with the old man, which made Sheng Rong very happy. Xia Kui also played chess with him.

Sheng Yan stood beside her and watched, looking up at her from time to time. He didn't expect her to be so talented. The corners of his mouth raised slightly as if he was thinking about something.

"Grandpa, you won." Sheng Rong won three games in a row, and Xia Kui kept praising him for his superb chess skills.

"Another plate?"

"it is good"

When Sheng Yu walked in, he saw his father playing chess with his daughter-in-law, with his son standing nearby. He walked over and watched, not saying a word to interrupt the two. He just stood there with his hands behind his back, watching the game.

The chess game is extremely tense. One person is making careful moves while the other is defending as best as he can. One wrong move will lead to a complete loss.

Xia Kui looked at the chessboard calmly with a smile on her lips. Sheng Yan saw this and put his hands in his pockets casually.

The father and son watched the game in silence, while the grandfather and grandson were on edge, wondering who was the better player.

Sheng Rong looked calm on the surface, but was actually very surprised in his heart. He didn't expect that she was so young and had such superb chess skills. With the last move, the old man narrowly won by half a piece.

"I lost, Grandpa"

"Hahaha, Xiaokui, are you a little tired from playing chess?" Xia Kui coaxed the old man and made him very happy.

"How could that be? Grandpa is an excellent chess player and I have learned a lot from him." Xia Kui turned around and called Sheng Yu "Dad".

Sheng Yu nodded and expressed his good impression of his daughter-in-law, who was very polite.

The father and son didn't understand what the old man meant. Sheng Rong stood up and looked at her: "You have to play chess defensively while calculating how to win a piece or two. Isn't it tiring?" After saying that, he couldn't help laughing.

Xia Kui lowered her head and smiled: "No way."

Seeing his father so happy, Sheng Yu also said, "Xiao Kui, your grandfather hasn't been this happy in a long time."

"Yeah, you two, father and son, just know how to piss me off!" Sheng Rong was merciless when he scolded his son.

Sheng Yu bowed his head: "Father"

"Hmph," Sheng Yu said angrily, turning around and changing his tone to say to Xia Kui, "Xiao Kui, come to my place for dinner when you have time and keep me company for a while. Don't let me go next time..."

"Okay," Xia Kui answered obediently. Sheng Yan pursed his lips slightly as he looked at her. The couple listened obediently.

"Dad, let's eat." Sheng Yu was calling him to have dinner.

"Xiao Kui, let's go and have dinner with grandpa." The couple had dinner with the old man before going back.

Li Shuhua was stunned when she saw two people following the old man. She didn't expect that she could make the old man happy in just a moment.

Grandpa Sheng kept asking her to eat more. Sheng Rong was very happy to have her granddaughter-in-law accompany her for dinner. She ate half a bowl more than usual. The family ate in harmony.

When leaving, the housekeeper brought a jewelry box to Xia Kui and said, "Xiao Kui, take this and see if you like it."

Sheng Rong found that his granddaughter-in-law was too plain and didn't even have any jewelry except a ring.

Xia Kui had no choice but to open it. It was a jade bracelet. She didn't understand it and thought it must be very expensive. So she said, "Grandpa, this is too expensive. I can't..."

"Here." Sheng Rong said before she could finish, "This is what your grandma left behind. She used to like it very much. She would be very happy if she knew it was given to you." Then he gestured to Sheng Yan to put it on her.

Xia Kui couldn't refuse, so she had to let him put it on. "Go back and put it away and return it to Sheng Yan." The two looked at each other without saying a word.

Sheng Yu didn't expect that her father gave her her mother's favorite bracelet.

"Okay, it goes well with your cheongsam." Sheng Rong looked at her with loving eyes, and the emerald bracelet was very elegant.

"Thank you, Grandpa." After finishing their meal, the couple said goodbye to the old man and went back. Xia Kui promised him that she would come and play chess with him when she was free.

On the way back, Xia Kui was very quiet. Sheng Yan looked at her sideways. Feeling his gaze, she asked, "What's wrong?"

Sheng Yan: "Congratulations, Mrs. Sheng, for finding a great backer."

Xia Kui raised the corner of her mouth, "Thank you."

Sheng Yan raised his eyebrows, "You dare to act in front of grandpa?"

Xia Kui looked at him and said, "You've seen it all. Do you think Grandpa is dumber than you?"

Sheng Yan was speechless after being confronted by her and chuckled: "Mrs. Sheng really makes me look at her in a new light."

"Grandpa has a keen eye, and no one can escape him. Now that he is in his seventies, he just wants to be with his parents and enjoy the happiness of family life. That's what makes him happy," Xia Kui said slowly, leaning back in her chair.

Sheng Yan listened casually, with a smile on his face.

Back at Sheng Garden, Butler Qin saw the two people coming back and responded, "Sir, Madam..."

Xia Kui responded and was about to go upstairs, but suddenly she thought of the bracelet on her hand. She stopped and said to the man behind her, "You keep this bracelet," and was about to take it off.

Sheng Yan stopped him and said, "This is what your grandpa gave you, so just wear it." What does this mean?

"It's too expensive, and I don't usually wear these." Xia Kui found that she couldn't take them off, so she stretched out her hand in front of him and said, "Help me."

Sheng Yan put his hands in his pockets and looked down at her, "If you don't want it, just give it back to grandpa yourself."

Xia Kui: ...She didn't dwell on it and turned around and went upstairs to sleep.

Sheng Yan snorted and went upstairs.

The two of them walked one after the other. Xia Kui went straight back to her room and didn't come out again, while Sheng Yan went to the study.

The housekeeper downstairs looked at the host and hostess and wondered if they had been scolded by the old man tonight. He couldn't understand.

Sheng Yan was working in the study. He looked up and saw the calligraphy and paintings on the wall. He remembered the scene of her writing at the desk, then shook his head and continued working.

After washing up, Xia Kui was busy in front of the computer. She had already taken off her bracelet and ring.
