The Metaphysical Little Beggar's Rebirth: I'm an Unlucky Star
Chapter 88 The Dry River
The early morning sun was just right, pouring into the room through the window, bringing warmth and brightness to the entire space. The sun shone softly on the bed and the floor, as if covering everything with a layer of golden light.
The sunlight shone through the curtains onto Shu Wanwan's face. She slowly woke up, yawned sleepily, and stretched. After doing these movements, she turned her head to look at Bai Xuan who was still sleeping soundly beside her.
It was sleeping peacefully, its long eyelashes trembling slightly, as if it was having a sweet dream. Shu Wanwan looked at Bai Xuan and thought, "What a sleepyhead."
She gently reached out and patted Bai Xuan's furry back.
"It's time to get up, Xiaobai." Shu Wanwan said softly.
Bai Xuan opened his eyes, jumped to the ground, stretched, shook his body, and turned into a human form.
Shu Wanwan and Bai Xuan packed up and went out, where they ran into Mrs. Shi picking vegetables in the yard.
"You two are awake. You will have dinner soon." Mrs. Shi greeted them warmly. At this time, the children of the Shi family went to school. The husband of the Shi family worked in the city and only came back during the holidays. Mrs. Shi's duties at home were to cook and wash clothes, and then go to her parents-in-law's house to deliver meals. It was not tiring, but she was alone most of the time and felt a little lonely. When two people came, she naturally felt happy. She also had someone to talk to, which made her less bored.
"Let's help too." Shu Wanwan rolled up her sleeves and prepared to help wash the vegetables. Then she said to Bai Xuan, "Xiaobai, go wash the pot." After hearing what Shu Wanwan said, Bai Xuan went to the kitchen without hesitation.
"Okay, okay." Mrs. Shi was not polite. It would be more lively to have someone to help.
With the help of Shu Wanwan and Bai Xuan, the meal was ready soon. The three of them sat around the table and prepared to eat.
"This is the simple food we have at home, don't be disgusted." Mrs. Shi said as she picked up some dishes for Bai Xuan and Shu Wanwan.
"How could that be?" Shu Wanwan smiled sweetly and gave back to Mrs. Shi.
The three of them sat at the table and started chatting while eating. The topics varied widely, from daily life and life's pressures to the latest entertainment news and village gossip. The atmosphere was relaxed and cheerful.
"Sister Shi, our village is called Helin Village. Why is there no river near the village?" Shu Wanwan asked a question that had made her curious since she heard the name of the village.
"There used to be a river here," Mrs. Shi sighed. "Then it slowly dried up, and now there's only a small puddle left. I heard that in the early years, the river water was very clear, and there were many fish and shrimp in it."
"That's quite a pity." Shu Wanwan said.
"Who says it isn't?" Mrs. Shi echoed. "But the old people in the village all say there's a treasure in that river. But no one can tell exactly what it is."
Bai Xuan listened carefully and secretly took note of this.
After dinner, Shu Wanwan and Bai Xuan helped Mrs. Shi wash the dishes and then left her house.
"Let's go look for that puddle." Bai Xuan suggested. He was very interested in the legendary treasure.
Shu Wanwan nodded. She had originally planned to stroll around the village, but now she also wanted to see what was so special about the puddle.
So, the two of them headed eastward toward the village. Along the way, they encountered many villagers, all of whom greeted them in a friendly manner. Finally, they found the puddle. It wasn't large, surrounded by weeds, and didn't seem like anything special.
"Do you feel it?" Bai Xuan frowned and looked at Shu Wanwan.
Shu Wanwan's expression was also a little strange. She stared at the puddle in front of her and said to Bai Xuan, "I felt it. I felt something was wrong as soon as I entered the village. This seems to be the source of this feeling."
Shu Wanwan and Bai Xuan circled the puddle, finding nothing unusual, which puzzled them both. Just then, Bai Xuan suddenly spotted a stone next to the puddle, inscribed with intricate runes. The stone wasn't large, but the runes were incredibly complex, making him eager to delve into its mysteries.
Bai Xuan curiously reached out to grab the stone, but to his surprise, he couldn't lift it. No matter how hard he tried, the stone remained motionless, as if nailed to the ground. What was going on?
"Let me do it." Shu Wanwan also noticed the stone next to Bai Xuan. She said to Bai Xuan and waved to him, signaling him to move aside. After hearing what Shu Wanwan said, Bai Xuan obediently took two steps back. Shu Wanwan walked in front of the stone.
Shu Wanwan channeled her spiritual energy into her palm and applied it to the stone. Unexpectedly, it actually worked, and the stone actually moved. Seeing this method was truly effective, Shu Wanwan channeled even more spiritual energy, chanting a complex spell. With a muffled sound, the stone was truly lifted up.
In an instant, a whirlpool appeared in the center of the puddle, accompanied by a thick gray smoke. After a while, the smoke gathered into a human figure.
"You were the ones who woke me up?" the gray-black figure said to Shu Wanwan and Bai Xuan.
"Yes." Seeing Shu Wanwan remained silent, Bai Xuan replied. Bai Xuan carefully examined the gray-black figure and then said, "Who are you?"
"Me? I am the river spirit here. I was supposed to protect the river water, but the people here abused water resources and polluted the river, causing my faith to slowly dry up. I was already declining, but I didn't expect that someone would seal me up again." The river spirit that was supposed to be clear and quiet turned gray and black. How ironic! This was not because of ghosts, but because of the villagers he tried his best to protect.
"Thank you for waking me up. But I don't think my body can hold on for much longer. I'm going back to the puddle. You don't have to worry about me anymore." As he spoke, He Ling turned into a wisp of gray smoke and disappeared from the sight of Shu Wanwan and Bai Xuan.
"Is it really okay to just leave it like this?" Bai Xuan said to Shu Wanwan as he looked at the spiritual power around He Ling that was no longer pure.
Shu Wanwan looked at the place where He Ling disappeared. "He must have resented the people in this village, but he didn't take revenge. It's more like he accepted his fate out of disappointment than being suppressed."
Shu Wanwan looked at the stone in front of her. The talismans on it seemed similar to those on the ancient walls of the temple. She exercised her spiritual power again, wanting to try whether she could read the runes on the stone like the words on the ancient wall.
But the stone was like a broken formation, and had turned into an ordinary stone. No matter how Shu Wanwan sensed it, it showed no reaction.
Shu Wanwan was a little frustrated and shook her head. There was no way, so Shu Wanwan gave up the sensing.
