New ink fragrance in old times
Chapter 15: Rest Your Mind
After careful consideration, Lin Mo resolutely chose to endure the pain in his hand to avoid the nauseating feeling of nausea. He bravely moved to another place and began to concentrate on peeling the corn kernels, trying to divert his attention.
However, fate always seems to like playing jokes on people. After Lin Mo took off a few cobs of corn with great effort, he made a shocking discovery that made him collapse instantly - these seemingly shriveled corn cobs actually hid chilling insects.
This sudden blow caught him off guard and made him feel helpless and angry. No one told him this cruel fact in advance.
Lin Mo wanted to die. He muttered to himself, as if accusing the heavens: "Oh my God, what did I do wrong to deserve such endless torture and pain?" At this moment, Lin Mo felt abandoned by the whole world, and loneliness and despair overwhelmed him like a tide.
After experiencing this series of blows, Lin Mo's heart seemed to be shattered by a heavy hammer. He could no longer muster up the energy and completely gave up, not wanting to find out any news.
He squatted there, silently immersed in his own emotions, allowing sadness and depression to wrap him tightly.
At this moment, he seemed to be isolated from the world, and everything around him had nothing to do with him. He just wanted to stay quietly in this small corner and let time slowly wash away the pain in his heart.
Xing'er noticed Lin Mo's downcast look and mistakenly thought he didn't want to continue working. So, she whispered to Lin Mo, "Sanlang, go inside and see if He'er is awake. If she is, call me."
Xing'er's words were like a refreshing rain, which helped Lin Mo get out of his predicament. After hearing this, Lin Mo stood up without hesitation. He really didn't want to stay here for a moment.
Lin Mo walked towards the main room, but he was not familiar with the layout here. He didn't know which room He'er was in, so he could only look for He'er in each room.
After some effort, he finally found the room where He'er was, but the scene in front of him made his heart tighten - half of He'er's body was hanging on the edge of the bed and she could fall at any time.
Lin Mo's heart suddenly sank. He rushed to the bed without hesitation and used his frail body to hold He'er tightly to prevent her from sliding further. Then, he anxiously shouted outside, "Come in quickly, she's about to fall!" His voice was trembling with unquestionable urgency.
When Xing'er heard Lin Mo's cry, she rushed into the house and picked up He'er. Seeing that He'er was safe and sound, Lin Mo and Xing'er both breathed a sigh of relief.
As soon as He'er saw that it was Xing'er holding her, she immediately waved her tender little hands excitedly, babbling, full of joy.
Xing'er held He'er gently and walked into the sun-filled yard. She carefully untied a corner of the swaddling clothes and hummed a soft tune. The melody seemed to have magical power, calming He'er down and preparing her for this daily "little ceremony".
Half squatting in a corner of the yard, Xing'er said to He'er in her delicate voice: "Be good, He'er, let's go pee now, and then I'll feed you some fragrant rice soup." As she spoke, she gently patted He'er's little butt. He'er seemed to really understand, and a relieved smile bloomed on her little face, making her look particularly adorable.
After completing all this, Xing'er carefully placed He'er on a specially made wooden cart covered with soft cotton cloth. She adjusted the angle of the cart to ensure that He'er could sleep peacefully in this comfortable environment. Watching He'er gradually fall asleep, Xing'er showed a satisfied smile on her face.
Then she turned to Hua'er who was busy peeling corn husks and said, "Hua'er, go to the backyard and pick some vegetables. We need to prepare the meal as soon as possible. The people working in the fields are waiting for us to deliver the meal today." After hearing this, Hua'er immediately responded and got up and walked towards the backyard.
At noon, the Lin family's meal was as simple and plain as usual: each person had a bowl of wild vegetable porridge and a palm-sized multi-grain and wild vegetable pancake.
Lin Mo held the bowl. Although the vegetable porridge was a little thicker than in the morning, it was still thin, with only a few grains of rice available.
The multi-grain and vegetable pancakes on the table were dry and tasteless, a little rough when chewed, and made his throat hurt. Lin Mo had to take a big gulp of porridge before he could swallow the pancakes.
However, when Lin Mo slowly raised his head and glanced at everyone at the table, each of them was eating more deliciously than the other, and each one was more satisfied than the other. This scene seemed particularly dazzling in his eyes.
He stared blankly, a feeling of indescribable bitterness and confusion welling up in his heart. Was this the life he was about to face? Day after day, year after year, if he really had to live here, day after day, like this, he would go crazy.
Lin Mo's emotions were becoming increasingly complex. He found himself missing the school meals immensely. Those seemingly ordinary school meals, which he would occasionally complain about, had now become a delicacy he couldn't let go of.
His thoughts gradually drifted away, and scenes of familiar yet distant delicacies emerged in his mind - the boiling red oil hot pot, emitting an enticing spicy aroma in the steam; the tender and juicy fish, the taste of the ocean jumping on the tip of the tongue; and in the alley at the north gate of the school, a bowl of simple but soul-stirring spicy hot pot, every bite of which was a warm embrace of life.
The more Lin Mo thought about it, the more uncomfortable he felt. So, he decided to turn his grief and anger into appetite, forcing himself to chew the food in front of him bite by bite.
He tried hard to swallow it down, and secretly told himself that he must find a way to return to that place full of laughter and delicious food.
After the meal, Huaer and Xinger quickly took action to tidy up the dishes and divided the work tacitly.
Xing'er first fed He'er some rice soup and carefully helped her urinate.
Huaer turned and went into the kitchen to prepare food for delivery.
She took out two earthenware jars, one for porridge and the other for water, and carefully placed them in the backpack. At the same time, she also sorted out the wild vegetable cakes and bowls and chopsticks and put them in the basket.
Before leaving, Xing'er instructed Lin Mo and Lin Sizhe, "You two are responsible for looking after the house and taking good care of your younger brothers and sisters. Don't run around casually. Remember?" Upon hearing this, Lin Mo and Lin Sizhe nodded in agreement.
"Also, if He'er wakes up, remember to feed her some rice soup." Xing'er did not forget to remind her again, and then carefully arranged the task of feeding the poultry and livestock.
Finally, Hua'er carried the basket filled with food, and Xing'er carried the heavy backpack, and they walked out of the yard together. At the gate, Xing'er took the key from her waist and carefully locked the door.
At noon, the sun hangs high in the sky, generously casting its golden light on the earth.
Xing'er and Hua'er walked briskly across the ridge of the field. After about quarter of an hour, they finally arrived at the edge of their own land.
