Chapter 45 Facing New Challenges

Xuan Ping and Xuan An finally had names and were officially integrated into their new home. However, Xuan An's condition worsened. His coughs grew more intense, each cough accompanied by a painful twitch, and his weak gasps made his face pale as paper. Lu Ling'er watched with anxiety. Xuan An's symptoms reminded her of a rare disease she had read about in the pharmacopoeia, further unsettling her. She knew she had to address Xuan An's condition quickly while also finding a way to settle into this unfamiliar environment.

"Okay, now that we have a name, we need to solve the next problem." Lu Linger frowned slightly, her eyes sweeping over everyone, her tone full of determination. "The herbal medicine we need may not be available in the pharmacy. We'll be staying here for a while, so we need to figure out the whole story. We can't be without rice, clothes, and thick blankets. And, since we're going to live here, we need to know who owns this place. If the officials come to our door, we'll be in trouble." She paused for a moment, a hint of worry in her eyes. "Now our travel permit may no longer be valid, so we have to find a way to solve these problems."

Xuan An listened, clenching his fists. He knew this proposal was crucial, so he cautiously raised his hand and said timidly, "Miss, I have a suggestion."

Lu Linger smiled slightly and said softly, "From now on, the two of you should stop calling me Miss and just call me Miss. Also, don't use terms like 'little one' and just be more normal. We're not a wealthy family, so we don't have so many rules. Tell me your suggestions."

Xuan An nodded, a hint of gratitude crossing his face. He straightened his back slightly and said, "Okay, young lady. The manager of the charity cemetery in the city can provide a pass. I'm not sure how they do it, but it seems inexpensive. Besides, the previous owner of this place was an old man named Shen Li, a herbalist and kind doctor who specialized in treating the poor."

Lu Linger's eyes lit up, and she immediately made arrangements: "That's great. Let's do this. I'll help everyone disguise themselves, and then go buy travel permits and the necessary items. Mo Xian, you'll be responsible for buying a carriage and contacting your superiors to see if there's any new information. I'll buy clothes, medicinal herbs, food, and daily necessities. Gu Yichen, you take the money and buy travel permits. It would be best if you could list Xuan'an and Xuanping as Shen Li's grandsons. That way it would be easier to explain why we're living here."

She took out three hundred taels of silver from her bosom and handed it to Gu Yichen. Gu Yichen took the silver, a trace of heartache flashed in his eyes, and whispered: "Let's use it sparingly, there is still a long way to go."

"After everyone has finished their own business, we will meet at the tea stall at the South Gate." Gu Yichen nodded in agreement and added, "Xuanping, you follow the young lady and help her carry her things."

Lu Linger was about to hand the banknotes to Mo Xian, but he waved them away. He smiled and said, "I have enough banknotes, don't worry. Go and do your own things. I won't delay your arrangements."

However, Mo Xian wasn't as relaxed as he appeared. He knew Gu Yichen's true identity, but he couldn't tell him because he had lost his memory. More importantly, if Lu Ling'er learned this, it could lead to even greater danger. Mo Xian knew that keeping this secret was the best way to protect everyone. A complex wave of worry welled up within him, but he maintained a relaxed expression.

With the missions complete, Lu Ling'er helped everyone disguise themselves. Although Shen Li's medicinal herbs were limited, they were more than enough for this mission. Everyone gathered at the courtyard gate, ready to set off together. Mo Xian headed to the carriage shop in the city to purchase a suitable carriage and contact his superiors for the latest information. Lu Ling'er, along with Xuan Ping, headed to the market to purchase clothing, medicinal herbs, food, and other daily necessities. Gu Yichen, along with Xuan An, went to the charity cemetery to resolve the issue of a travel permit.

Just as everyone was preparing to depart, the sound of hurried horse hooves suddenly rang out in the distance, accompanied by billowing dust. Mo Xian's expression froze, and he immediately stood beside Gu Yichen and Lu Ling'er, his eyes warily scanning the source of the sound. Xuan Ping and Xuan An also unconsciously moved closer to them, their palms beginning to sweat.

Gu Yichen frowned slightly and whispered, "Be careful, someone might be coming."

Lu Linger's heart tightened, but she immediately calmed down and quickly made arrangements: "Stay calm. No matter who it is, don't reveal any flaws first."

The sound of horse hooves grew closer, and the air around them seemed to freeze, a silence so oppressive that it felt almost deafening. Everyone held their breath, exchanged nervous glances, and waited quietly for the newcomer to arrive. In this tense moment, they must unite to face the upcoming unknown challenge.
