Chapter 42: Unexpected Assistance

Just as Gu Yichen, Lu Ling'er, and Mo Xian were searching for a new hiding spot, two small figures suddenly appeared behind them. Mo Xian, alert to the situation, quickly grabbed the two little beggars by the neck and slid them up. The two little beggars, their feet off the ground, frantically clutched their necks, clearly terrified, begging for mercy.

Seeing this, Lu Linger immediately shouted, "Mo Xian, let them go!" Mo Xian heard Gu Yichen's reaction and quickly let go. The two little beggars fell heavily to the ground, gasping for breath, their faces full of fear.

Gu Yichen recognized the two young beggars as two of the ones he had hired in the dilapidated temple. Although they were usually inconspicuous, they were clearly frightened by Mo Xian's tough tactics. He squatted down and asked seriously, "Why are you following us? What's going on?"

The little beggar on the left raised his head, his hands trembling constantly, and his voice was filled with endless pleading: "Sir, we are just little beggars. We were caught here when we were fleeing famine. My brother is sick, and the traffickers are unwilling to spend money to treat him, so we ended up in the dilapidated temple. If you don't despise us, I am willing to sell myself to you like a slave, just to help me get my brother treated."

The little beggar on the right looked frail, his head bowed, and he kowtowed silently, following his brother. Seeing their plight, Gu Yichen felt a surge of pity. The two little beggars hadn't shown much in the afternoon at the dilapidated temple, but their actions now made Gu Yichen realize they might be up to something.

Gu Yichen thought for a moment, and his heart was a little shaken. He realized that although these two little beggars seemed insignificant, they were able to track here, which showed that they were quite resourceful. Moreover, if they followed them now, it might help solve the current dilemma.

Lu Linger looked at the little beggar on her right, observing him carefully for a moment. After gaining a brief understanding of the little beggar's condition, she formed a judgment. She said to Gu Yichen, "This little beggar is indeed ill, and my medical skills can help him. Although his illness is difficult for other doctors to treat, for me, through acupuncture and medicinal baths, there is still some hope."

Gu Yichen nodded, determined to make a decision. He said to the two little beggars, "Since you are willing to sell yourselves into slavery, we will accept you. However, you must cooperate with our actions during this period and help us deal with some matters."

The little beggar on the left kowtowed gratefully: "Thank you, sir. I will do my best."

Mo Xian also let down his guard. Although he still had some doubts about the identities of the two little beggars, he could see that Gu Yichen had made a decision. He turned to Gu Yichen and said, "If we decide to accept them, we must ensure that they can help us effectively. Now, we need to find a new place to hide and arrange their work."

The little beggar's elder brother immediately said, "I know there is an abandoned house on the outskirts of the city, not far from here, and it has been abandoned for a long time." As he said that, he hurriedly took his brother's hand and led the way.

Seeing this, Lu Ling'er felt somewhat comforted. Since Gu Yichen had decided to accept them, she should trust these two little beggars. Moreover, this little beggar brother still needed her medical treatment, and she hoped to start treatment as soon as possible.

The group quickly slipped out of the city in the dark, and under cover of darkness, they successfully reached the abandoned courtyard the beggar had mentioned. Indeed, such a place existed; it appeared to have once been the residence of a herbalist. The courtyard's layout still reflected the owner's former neatness. The courtyard was surrounded by a stone wall, and the house was also built of stone. The main room consisted of a large living room, flanked by three simple side rooms, a storeroom, a kitchen, and two toilets.

Gu Yichen, Lu Ling'er, and Mo Xian inspected the place and determined it was suitable for temporary hiding. Gu Yichen said to the little beggar brother, "This is a good place. Now, you can settle down here, and we need to start planning our new plan."

The little beggars nodded and turned around to go about their business.
