Chapter 38: Uneasy
The lobby of the Fulai Inn was brightly lit, candlelight flickering. Just as Gu Yichen was about to return to his room, he heard a low voice behind him calling, "Sir, please stay." He turned and saw a tall, calm man standing not far away. He smiled, but his eyes revealed an unpredictable emotion.
This man was Mo Xian, Mo Shui's younger brother and one of the Mo family's guards. Though he had changed into the attire of an ordinary merchant, his dignified demeanor and the sharpness in his eyes remained undimmed. Despite his amnesia, Gu Yichen's intuition made him wary of the man before him.
"Is there anything I can do for you, sir?" Gu Yichen asked calmly, feeling vaguely that the man's arrival was not just a chance encounter.
Mo Xian smiled slightly and bowed. "I am a businessman passing through here. I happened to see you and felt that you looked familiar. I saw that you were very impressive and I couldn't help but ask you where you are from."
Gu Yichen's heart stirred, but he remained silent. He knew he had lost his memory and was completely unaware of his identity, but he instinctively sensed that this test was more than just a simple one. He replied cautiously, "My name is Gu Yichen. As for where I'm from, I'd like to ask if you could explain it to me."
Mo Xian felt a little comforted upon hearing this; the prince truly had no recollection of the past. He suppressed his excitement and remained polite, "Young Master Gu is truly a distinguished gentleman. If fate calls for it, we'll surely meet again. I can't stay here any longer. I wish you and your daughter a safe journey."
Gu Yichen nodded, bowed in return, and watched Mo Xian leave, his brows furrowed slightly, his doubts deepening. He felt as if the man before him knew everything about him, yet was deliberately avoiding something.
When Gu Yichen returned to the room, Lu Linger was already waiting inside. Seeing his frown, she asked with concern, "Yichen, what happened?"
Gu Yichen briefly recounted his conversation with Mo Xian. Lu Linger couldn't help but feel wary. "This person's background is unknown, and his words are full of probing. Perhaps he knows something about your past."
Gu Yichen was silent for a moment, then raised his head, a hint of determination flashing in his eyes: "No matter what, we must remain vigilant when we meet the prefect tomorrow."
Meanwhile, Mo Xian had quietly left the inn and arrived at a secluded alley. He looked up at the night sky, took a deep breath, and tried to suppress his excitement and doubts. His previous conversation with Gu Yichen had left him feeling unsettled. His Highness had indeed lost his memory, but he couldn't be sure if he had revealed too much information to Lu Ling'er. This was concerning the Crown Prince's safety.
Mo Xian quickly wrote a secret letter and sent it by carrier pigeon. It detailed Gu Yichen's situation and requested further instructions. Although deeply grateful to Lu Ling'er, he knew he had a greater responsibility: protecting the Crown Prince's identity from being revealed and ensuring the overall situation remained stable.
Lu Linger knew that this journey was dangerous, but for her father's safety, she had no choice. She held Gu Yichen's hand and said firmly, "No matter what dangers lie ahead, we will face them together."
Gu Yichen felt her trust and determination, and his heart warmed. He nodded in agreement, and the two of them finished their dinner in silence, then went back to their rooms to rest and prepare for tomorrow's challenge.
As night fell, the lights of the Fulai Inn gradually dimmed. In the stillness of the night, a pair of eyes stared at Gu Yichen and Lu Ling'er's room in the darkness, flashing a cold light. As time passed, the night in the capital city grew darker, and the lurking crisis quietly approached.
The next morning, just after dawn, Gu Yichen and Lu Ling'er got up early, packed up, and headed for the government office. Halfway through their journey, they suddenly heard the muffled sound of horse hooves approaching from afar. Then, several men in black rushed out of the alley and surrounded them.
Gu Yichen's eyes flashed, and he quickly protected Lu Ling'er and whispered, "Ling'er, be careful." He never relaxed his vigilance against the enemy. The long sword in his hand was quietly unsheathed, and a cold light flashed.
The leading black-clad man sneered, his voice threatening: "Gu Yichen, Lu Linger, I'm afraid you won't be able to leave this street today."
Lu Linger tightly grasped the whip in her hand, a trace of anger flashing in her eyes: "Who are you? Why are you blocking our way?"
The man sneered and said, "Someone doesn't want you to see the prefect. You don't need to know who it is." As soon as he finished speaking, the men in black drew their swords, their eyes full of murderous intent.
Gu Yichen calmly scanned the surroundings, analyzing the enemy situation. He whispered to Lu Ling'er, "Ling'er, find an opportunity to break through later. Don't fight too long."
Lu Ling'er nodded, then deftly moved to the side, preparing to escape. Gu Yichen, sword drawn, blocked her path, coldly gazing at the approaching enemy. At this moment, Mo Xian appeared in front of Gu Yichen, regaining his playful smile, and stood between Gu Yichen and Lu Ling'er, "Master Gu, we meet again."
Mo Xian smiled, but his eyes revealed some complicated emotions. He said softly, "It seems that this unexpected encounter may be God's arrangement. Let me solve these troubles."
Gu Yichen was surprised. He locked eyes with Mo Xian for a moment, and doubts welled up in his heart. He didn't understand why Mo Xian suddenly appeared, and he had more questions about his true identity and purpose.
Mo Xian's appearance not only brings a glimmer of hope, but also makes Gu Yichen more vigilant about the complex factors behind this crisis. Just then, the men in black begin to attack them, and Mo Xian quickly draws his sword and joins the fray. Gu Yichen and Lu Ling'er must find a way out of this chaotic situation to face the even more severe challenges that lie ahead.
