Chapter 229 Clues Emerge

Lu Linger thought to herself that she had to start with Li Yuncui and Sun Susu's diet. She decided to delve deeper into their food sources during this period in order to find the root cause of their illness.

"Husband, I want to check their kitchen first to see if there is anything suspicious." Lu Linger suggested, her voice full of nervousness.

"Okay, I'll go with you." Gu Yichen responded, thinking to himself that if he could find the problem, he might be able to help them recover as soon as possible. As they walked out of the room, the air seemed to be filled with a sense of oppression, and the sky gradually darkened, as if foreshadowing the coming of a storm.

They arrived at Li Yuncui's kitchen, which wasn't very big. Several pots hung on the wall, and a few bowls of leftover porridge sat on the stove, making it look a bit messy. Lu Linger's heartbeat began to accelerate, her intuition telling her that something wasn't going on.

"The porridge here hasn't been poured out yet?" Lu Linger frowned. "It looks like it was just made."

Gu Yichen walked to the stove and carefully observed the remaining porridge. He found that the color of the porridge in the bowl was a little unusual, darker than usual, and faintly revealed a strange luster.

"Ling'er, do you think there's something wrong with this porridge?" There was a hint of uneasiness in Gu Yichen's voice.

"I find it a little strange, too." Lu Linger picked up a spoon and stirred it gently, only to discover some unidentified particles settled at the bottom of the porridge. "This looks like some kind of foreign matter. We need to examine it further."

She carefully scooped some of the porridge into a clean bowl, preparing to take it back for analysis. Then, Lu Ling'er carefully searched the rest of the kitchen, looking for more clues. Her gaze suddenly stopped in a corner, where she spotted a cloth bag used to store grains. The bag was stained with a white powder that emitted a disturbing smell.

"What is this?" Gu Yichen took a closer look, feeling a sense of unease. "It looks like some kind of additive?"

"It's more likely poison." Lu Linger's face turned serious, and her heart tightened. "This white powder is arsenic, commonly used for poisoning. It is extremely toxic and can cause vomiting, coma, fever and other symptoms."

"Arsenic?!" Gu Yichen took a step back in shock, then thought of Li Yuncui and Sun Susu's illnesses. "Could it be that their illnesses were caused by eating food containing arsenic?"

"That's possible." Lu Linger's heart grew heavier. "Let's see if anyone else has eaten this powder and find the person who used this poison as soon as possible."

During the kitchen inspection, they also found some other ingredients that seemed to be used to make porridge. Lu Linger carefully recorded all the findings, and she felt more and more that the seriousness of the matter was getting worse.

"We now need to find our neighbors and ask them about their recent diet to see if there are any similarities." Lu Linger suggested in a firm tone.

Gu Yichen nodded, "Okay, the neighbors should know something."

The two left Li Yuncui's house and headed toward their neighbors. A young couple had heard about Li Yuncui's condition and were anxiously discussing it at home. As they approached, Lu Ling'er could hear their whispered arguments, and they seemed filled with anxiety.

"Hello, ma'am. I'm the doctor who treats your neighbor Sister Sun and her mother-in-law. Can we ask you a few questions?" Lu Linger spoke politely, trying to make her voice sound relaxed.

"Of course, please ask." The young wife responded hastily, with anxiety flashing in her eyes.

"Have you eaten any food similar to that of Madam Li recently? Or has anything special happened?" Lu Linger went straight to the point, but she felt vaguely uneasy in her heart.

The young wife thought for a moment and shook her head. "We don't have anything special at home, but a few days ago a neighbor sent some snacks. They tasted a bit strange, so we didn't dare to eat them."

"Which neighbor?" Gu Yichen asked, feeling a sense of foreboding.

"It's the aunt who just moved in at the end of this alley. She brought us something not long ago." The young wife said with a hint of doubt in her eyes.

"Can you describe what that aunt looks like?" Lu Linger asked immediately, feeling that this aunt might be a key person.

The young wife thought for a moment and then slowly said, "She was not tall, and she wore gray clothes. She was always covering herself up. I can't remember her details."

Lu Linger's suspicions grew. This neighbor's behavior seemed extremely suspicious. She decided to find the aunt as soon as possible and ask her what she was doing.

"Thank you. Is your child okay? I heard from Mrs. Li that your child is vomiting and has a high fever." Lu Linger thanked her and thought secretly in her heart.

"Not yet. Can you help check him out? He's in the same condition as Madam Li and Susu next door." The young wife pleaded, despair in her voice.

"Okay, I'll go check it out right away." Lu Linger's heart tightened and she began to worry about the child's condition, thinking that things might be far more complicated than she had imagined.

In the young couple's room, the child lay listlessly on the bed, his face pale and his forehead hot. Lu Ling'er approached, feeling a heavy sense of crisis. She wondered: Could this child's condition also be related to the gray-clad aunt? She had to find the truth quickly, or else more people might be harmed.
