Chapter 29: Towards Lord Silverlaine's Castle
"Since last year? Did anything happen last year?" Alvin asked with a frown.
"A big event happened last year! The orc army attacked the royal city for a long time but couldn't take it. I heard that their retreat was cut off by King Thoradin. The orcs fled south in panic, and they took the Silverpine Forest route! Everyone in the town hid in the forest and didn't suffer much damage. It is said that everyone could see thousands of black orc troops passing by!"
"Later, the orcs were defeated in the south. The orcs were either killed or captured, but no one cared about their giant wolves. They all fled in all directions, and many of them escaped back to Silverpine Forest! Since then, people have reported seeing giant wolves."
Alvin nodded and said, "I see. I've heard that orcs have a kind of cavalry riding wolves."
It's similar to what's depicted in Warcraft III, the kind that holds a big knife and casts a net, Alvin thought.
"But aren't they just wild animals? Can't everyone just go and kill the wolves? How did they turn into werewolves later?"
Jim sighed, "If only it were that simple! This is where things start to become a horror story!!"
Jim stared at the glass in his hand, as if recalling something horrible.
"Lord Silverlaine did form a wolf-hunting team. I heard they successfully hunted several giant wolves, but suffered heavy casualties."
"Just when everyone thought things were about to calm down, a member of the wolf-fighting team—what was his name? Briefs, yes, Mr. Briefs, the captain of Silverlaine's guards—suddenly turned into a werewolf! I heard it happened in Lord Silverlaine's castle! And then Lord Silverlaine killed the beast with his own hands!"
"You mean it started with a giant wolf, and then it became a werewolf? What caused this Mr. Briefs to become a werewolf?"
"How would I know that? Anyway, don't tell anyone else about this, let alone tell them that I told you. I just listened to it for fun, but who would have thought that we would see this weird thing with our own eyes today? Until today..."
Jim squeezed the glass so hard that he almost broke it.
"Until today! I'm sure what that damn cook said might be true!"
"What cook? Where did this cook appear?" Alvin asked curiously.
"It was the cook who resigned from the castle. He said he saw with his own eyes the usually kind and honest Mr. Briefs suddenly let out a howl of pain, mixed with the growl of a wild beast. Then his body began to tremble violently, his muscles twisting beneath his skin, as if an invisible force was tearing his body apart. Briefs' eyes turned blood red, his pupils contracted into thin vertical lines, filled with rage and pain. His fingers gradually lengthened, his nails growing rapidly, turning into razor-sharp claws. Then his face began to deform, his nose and mouth extending into a wolf's muzzle, and his teeth became extremely sharp. Hair quickly grew from beneath his skin, covering his entire body. He also became taller and stronger, completely losing his human appearance."
Jim tried to pour himself another glass of wine with shaking hands, but found that he couldn't pour it properly and the wine spilled on the table.
Alvin quickly held his hand and filled it up for him.
"Lord Silverlaine and his guards watched this unfold, retreating in terror, their weapons trembling. Briefs—no, now he should be called Werewolf Briefs—let out a deafening roar, his voice filled with feral rage and pain. He lunged at the nearest guard, his claws slicing the air, stirring up a cloud of blood."
"Lord Silverlaine finally reacted and shouted, 'Kill him! Kill him now!' The guards raised their weapons and rushed towards the werewolf. The battle unfolded in the castle hall, where fire and blood intertwined, screams and roars echoed one after another. Finally, the lord stepped forward himself, brandishing his sword, and after a fierce fight, he finally beheaded the werewolf Briefs! Later, the cook was so frightened that he resigned and fled back to his hometown overnight. I think he was from Alterac, and no one knows where he is now! Anyway, the matter was suppressed by Lord Silverlaine."
Alvin pondered for a moment and then asked, "What caused everyone to turn into werewolves? Is it some kind of infectious disease?"
Jim advised, "You'd better not meddle in other people's business, and you'd better not go to Lord Silverlaine's castle tomorrow. This horror story originated from that damn castle!"
"Then I have to go even more." Alvin thought.
Silent all night.
The next morning, Alvin, Jim and Akali Tasha were enjoying breakfast downstairs in the hotel.
The hot goat milk paired with freshly baked bread is fragrant and will whet your appetite.
Alvin took a sip of goat's milk and felt the warm liquid sliding down his throat. He couldn't help but sigh in his heart that such a peaceful time was really rare.
Soon, a well-dressed man walked into the hotel.
His steps were steady and his manners were elegant, clearly a sign of good training.
He bowed politely to Alvin and said, "Distinguished gentlemen, may I ask who is Mr. Priest? I am Beaver, the steward of the lord's house. Following the lord's orders, I have come to invite you to visit Mr. Silverline's castle."
Jim was about to stand up to stop Alvin, but was pulled back.
Alvin shook his head at Jim, stood up, and responded with a smile: "I am Alvin Priest. I am honored to be invited. Please lead the way."
Jim sighed helplessly and said, "Then I'll go to the carriage and sort out the mail here. You can find me in the carriage or inn when you come back."
Alvin nodded, turned to Akali Tasha and said, "Akali, wait for me at the inn."
However, Akalissa stood up, her red eyes flashing with anxiety, and she grabbed Alvin's clothes tightly to prevent him from leaving.
Alvin asked, "Do you want to go with me?" Akalitassa nodded, her eyes full of anticipation.
Alvin asked the housekeeper helplessly, "Can I take my sister with me?"
Butler Beaver smiled and replied, "Of course."
"That......"
"Let's go together. Don't eat too much, or others will laugh at us." Alvin whispered to Akalitasa.
Akalitrasa was very happy now. She sat in the carriage with Alvin, and from time to time she stuck her head out to look at the forest outside.
The sunlight shone through the gaps in the leaves onto her face, making her look particularly bright.
Seeing that she had recovered well, Alvin asked softly, "Akali, can you tell me what happened to you before?"
Hearing Alvin's question, Akalitha's mood suddenly became depressed, and she shrank into the corner of the carriage like a little girl who had done something wrong.
Seeing this, Alvin had no choice but to say gently: "Okay, okay, let's talk about it when you want to. There's no rush."
The carriage continued on its way, passing through the dense forest, heading towards Lord Silverlaine's castle.
Soon, the outline of the castle gradually emerged deep in the dense woods.
Suddenly, Alvin felt the hilt of Xal'atath's sword vibrate violently in his arms, as if it resonated with some magical energy.
